State Championships earlier today. Lots of climbing. started race at 11 when the temp was 95 degrees, and halfway through it was 110. only 5 guys finished. If you got dropped you pretty much quit then and there. 3 feed zones for a 67 mile race and it wasn't enough.
I dropped out halfway through when I started shivering. I was about to jump in the follow car when a guy lurched out and threw up. I did get to watch the race finish though.
An attack dropped one of the 5 remaining guys with 2 k's to go but the 4 up front sat up and the guy who got dropped flew past at the 1 k sign. There was a mad scramble to track him down and a kid who was the strongest sprinter in the group had to go from 400m out. the guy on his wheel came through to win while my teammate was 3rd.
To give you an idea of how difficult the race was I was jammed in the follow car with a multi-time national TT champ and a guy who spend a month in belgium for the national team last year.
It was the first time I'd watched a race from a follow car. It was pretty intense. If you ever get the chance go for it.

Tuesday crits tonight: The legs are really starting to come good. Did the first race, mixed 4/5's and spent the first half of the race trying to make a move stick (bad headwind section was the best place to attack). Won two primes along the way, spent the rest of the race riding position until the final lap, when I tried another move into the headwind section and spend half a lap on the front. Got caught in the tailwind and jumped into the sprint train. Finished 8th. The guy who won complemented me on racing smart and aggressive at the same time.
Second Race was a mixed category race of 3's and 4's. I launched my teammate into the breakaway then drifted to the back, started moving up and got top 15 in the sprint when it all came back together.
Sent in my upgrade resume to become a 3. Cross your fingers.

well done levi. just got back from 3 and a half hours with 2 20min hard sessions thrown in. Felt quite good and still had the power to go up the hilly run home at quite a good pace. 10 days until my season really starts with my clubs open 10. hopefully i can get close to my pb.
i'm off for a shower, something to eat and then a lie down. |

Just an hour ride today...tapering for a 4 day large weekend of racing.
Winds were terrible. Going out, I was hitting 12 mph on some flats, and coming home...nearly 40mph
And also it was 90 degrees. YIKES |

Got 5th again today in the Auburn Criterium. Up at altitude, with a long steep climb up to two quick, narrow and sketchy turns, another long uphill drag to a 1 lane bridge then 2 quick rights and a descent into a sketchy off camber corner, 2 more turns then the uphill finish. 3 guys went off the front half way through, (including a cat 2 and a cat 3) and stuck it too the line. Cat 2 won, cat 3 second. I was gapped going down the hill but made a big comback in the sprint.
It was one of those, "if the finish was 5 meters up the road" kind of sprints from me. Felt shitty throughout the race. Hopefully tomorrow is better.

What is your favorite food to eat before a race. Personally it's either Chipotle (yes THE Chipotle) or a bowl of rice with eggs and parmesan cheese
