@Ian: First I wanted to write: Beat the sprinters, but actually there aren`t that many and Farrar is of course a bigger motivation for Eastman than Keough or Friedman.
@Alakagom: Hope so, too. First the TT, later today or tomorrow the RR.
USA Cycling National Championships - ITT
I never was the best time trialist and probably I will never be. But it is important for me to keep a rhythm so that I will have good legs for the road race in two days, where I have better chances than here.
Today I had a calm and relaxing day, wasn`t really trying to ride 100% and even had time to read some spectator`s signs...no Eastman sign...
When I reached the finish I already knew that I won`t get a top30 today. In the end it was not even the top60. But the legs did well and gave me hope for the Road Race.
Brown and Boswell had good results so far, but our last rider is Lawson Craddock, our by far best time trialist.
We didn`t have a lot of time trials so far. Actually I can only remember the San Luis one, where Craddock was doing very well.
At the moment it`s Van Garderen leading but Phinney, Vandevelde, Leipheimer... still to come.
At half time Craddock was 7th and just 29s behind the 1st and ahead of Phinney, who seems to have a bad day. Looking good so far.
In the finish he was very close to Pate, who started ahead but also was riding under his normal level. And Craddock probably rode above his level.
He just lost another 9s to the new ITT champion TvG and finished on a great 5th beating Leipheimer or Zirbel.
Great result for our small team and also Brown and Boswell finished in the top20. This should give us a boost for the upcoming Road Race.

@Ian: Indeed. Ryan was riding early and I still had to find the optimal %.
@Avin: Thanks. Was pretty surprised to improve on the 2nd half. Had luck that guys like Phinney, Pate, Leipheimer obviously not in top form.
USA Cycling National Championships - RR
Almost 3/16 laps done and we finally have the group of the day. And it`s indeed me finding the good group today. And we have also a very famous companion in here. Levi Leipheimer decided to try it with the early move. Most probably as he has no team mates here since he rides for the Belgium Omega Pharma Quickstep team.
The other two riders are Nate King (Competive Cycling) and Robin Carpenter (Chipotle).
At about half of the race done, Garmin and Kelly Benefit start to do the pace behind. Garmin is the favourite team here as they have so many chances to win this.
86km left and 5'40 advance. We still work together very well. Carpenter already has some troubles and might fall back soon. In especially when Leipheimer is doing the pace on the uphill sections he always opens a small gap.
With 2 laps to go Leipheimer attacked. He surely is the strongest. King and I are a bit behind trying to close the gap again while Carpenter is gone.
Ben King (RadioShack) and Hincapie (BMC) attacked out of the peloton. So this is the moment where Dombrowski follows. We can`t wait for Garmin to bring Farrar in position as we already enter the last lap.
You see Nate King still ahead with Hincapie and Ben King now reaching him. I waited a bit for Dombrowski seeing that he couldn`t close the gap and support him with my last energy.
Unlucky Leipheimer. With 50m to go he was reached by Hincapie, who then was faster in the sprint to win the title once again in his very last season. Great success for him, now he can retire.
(Hate this Cya stuff, that single groups don`t sprint or even increase the pace in a sprint)
Joe with a good result. 4th behind the trio. Unfortunately he couldn`t close the gap, otherwise he might have been fought for the win. But still great result for us top 5 in both Nationals.
A Garmin trio rode out of the peloton on the last lap with Vandevelde, Howes and Peterson. Surprisingly no Farrar. They caught me before the line so that the 9th was the maximum today. I am pretty happy with this result as it will give me some more reputation in the USA, which I need when I want to call attention of bigger teams in the next 2-3 years.
And I was able to beat Tyler Farrar, who finished fastest of the peloton coming in 10th. So although Garmin has 4 guys in the top10, they must be pretty disappointing here.

Thanks all.
@aidanvn13: Great to hear you like the story.
The Vuelta a Colombia was first held in 1951 and except for 3 years the winner always came from Colombia. Their mountain goats normally dominate this race as it`s their main goal for the season.
It belongs to the UCI America Tour as 2.2 race and is obviously one of the longest races in this category stage wise.
15 stages expect the riders. An opening team time trial and a final individual time trial, 3 flat stages, 3 flat to hilly stages and 7 mountain stages, where the race normally will be decided. There you can surely expect a firework by the Colombians.
The startlist is extremely hard. The five Colombian teams all have 2-3 riders that could win the race. Lots of great climbers. With Buenahora, Baez and last years winner Cardenas there are even 3 former winners at the start.
For the non Columbians it`s just about trying to enter the top5, which would already a success seeing the competition.
Sprinting wise the startlist is a bit weaker although there are some great sprinters with Friedman, Havik, Zabel, Montiel or Angarita.
Due to a parallel race with the Tour d`Alsace later this month, we just participate with 6 riders. This will be a huge disadvantage for us. Still we thinkg we have a strong squad here. Joe of course will be our leader and aims a top10. To repeat his California performance I think his form is just not good enough and with all the Colombians peaking here, it might be almost impossible. Parker will be his main support in the mountains. But also Avis, who is having a great form should stay with them for quite a long time.
The rest of the team, Stuyven, Craddock and myself won`t feel good in the mountains and might try something on the easier stages. Most likely you can see us on some of the stages in the breakaway or in Stuyven`s case maybe even in the final sprint. Depending on his regeneration Craddock might even try to win the individual time trial.
Favourites
Columbians:
*** Baez
** Munoz Giraldo, Nino
* Cardenas, Buenahora, Ramirez Calderon
(Hard to choose as there are so many 76-78 climbers)
Others:
*** Alarcon
** Dombrowski, Gutierrez Cataluna
* Fothen, Parker, Mancebo
Team Goals
- Top10
- Stage win
Personal Goals
- Top5 stage
- 2 breakaways
- supporting Joe also in the mountains

That's an excellent result in the TT with Boswell and in the RR with Ryan and JLD. Sponsors should be quite happy too. Well done Surprising Spanish's winner as well.
Volta should be a cracker, good luck

@Alakagom: Thanks. I hope the sponsor is happy. They should be. Thought the same about Reynes and immediately checked the result page. Typical simmed result I guess.
@Sutty: Thanks. Hope so as well, but seeing that I don`t peak for this race, it might be hard against lots of peaking National bonus high quality climbers.
@Miguel98: I think it`s the 2010 route made by Armagetron. I edited the profiles into the preview now, but spoilered them due to their length.
As you can see the last two mountains might be the hardest. So these are the mountains I concentrate the most. Until then Dombrowski should have better form, so I hope I can keep the loss in the first climbs as much as possible. |

Stage 1 - La Ceja - Rionegro TTT (20km)
Welcome from La Ceja, a really nice small town in the West of Colombia. It`s not far from here to the Andes and tomorrow already we will be up there in the mountains for a while. But the really hard stages will come later and until then I will surely enjoy the race more.
It`s by far the longest race in my race schedule and might give me a first feeling of riding a GT, although it`s yet another week longer.
We start with a 20km team time trial. Except for Craddock none of us is good against the clock. But luckily also the other teams are more or less without strong time trialists in especially the GC teams as Columbians often struggle on the flat.
But having only 6 guys here will really give us a big disadvantage. Hopefully we will not lose too much today.
We started pretty slow as we didn`t know what to expect from this course and we never visited the course earlier. As expected Craddock did the most job but all of us went through the lead.
We highered the pace with every kilometer and when we reached the finish Dombrowski was at his limit althous Craddock could have gone faster today.
As we started in the first half we don`t know what our time is really worth.
In the end we can be pretty happy finishing 11th of 23 and jsut 1'08 behind stage winner Rabobank Continental. Most GC teams didn`t gain a lot of time on us, so this is another positive. Only real negative is that Parker lost contact in the end and although the gap was minimal he was counted +4s to the rest of us.

It's a good result! It happened to me in another TTT that you think that the whole pack finish at the same time but there is a little difference. 4 secs are not a big lose for him.
Let's see how the team develops in the next two flat stages before hitting the mountain.
Good luck!
