Very impressive ride by Quintana (note no gloves even in the snow!). Other GC conenders dicking about has gifted him a good GC advantage; would have made better sense to avoid all the stop-start jumping about and just make a concerted effort; so many riders struggling, would have ridden most of the hangers on off.

Quintana seems to have just won the Tirreno. I don't think he can lose that much on the last time trial.
Contador not where he needs to be, regardless of his bad positioning when Quintana attacked |

I really can't figure out Nibali. He is so far from a GC contender atm. |

I don`t really wanna know how the sprinters go up there.
They are far heavier than the light climbers and already struggle to go up without snow being close to standing at times.
I guess in this snow many wheels will have spinned today. |

And it was the same last year before he came out and smashed Le Tour, be it a weakened race or not he put out some serious numbers which would of matched Froome or Contador.

That snow was insane! Albeit Quintana finally showed some form, and Mollema really surprised me, fantastic ride for him.

But can't imagen that Astana feels fine with Nibali inly being in shape for 3 weeks.
I know TDF is huge and all, but he is being paid a lot of dollars, and is not delivering at all. |

What? Snow just makes it more fun more spectators. I hate that tendency that everything should be cancelled, shortened, monitored etc, there was absolutely nothing wrong with riding in those circumstances imo. The sprinters have a harder time at 15% anyways. And today was nothing compared to the stage Nibbles won in the Giro 2 years ago, really.
Ewan: Finally showed form? It was his second race of the season and he podiumed in his first.
Edit: I asssume tho that Nibali is at a better place this year compared to last year? He should be able to top-10 in the ardennes if he keeps improving.

They looked pretty happy after last years TDF, its the biggest race on the calendar and they won it (unless something comes out )

Yeah i know. But if thats the only race he is going to be in shape for (not certain that he wins it) i would say, that he wasn't worth the money.
Oh well, lets see what he has to offer in the Ardennes and the Dauphine |

@Dusen
I agree with you in that if he fails in the main race he is aiming for its a massive fail but Nibbles seems to like the pressure, guess we will see once we get to the bigger races

Just seen some images of the weather..... i'd say that falls under the extreme weather banner, incredibly harsh conditions! We've stages cancelled/altered/neutralised for a lot less....

Snow was only falling / lying in the last 1-1.5km or so. My opinion is that this one was acceptable to complete. If the climb had steeper slopes where the snow was starting to lie (was easing off, big ring territory by then (although Quintana looked like he big-ringed thr whole thing!)), e.g. requiring getting out of the saddle, then I would contend sensible to stop, or move finish down the mountain.
Equallly as dangerous imo was the (not unusual) disaster of dealing with the team cars at the finish - in snow, rain or sunshine, this is just stupid. Only at the most extreme mtn top locations should this ever be a genuine issue.

I thought Mercx reaction at Duba wasi a bit harsh. But today snow dangerous..and should be canceled?!
Really? Lets cancel all Giro mountain stages because there is hugh possibility to have snow.
lets cover Roubaix stones with asphalt..because it is terrible surface ...nightmare with rain.
cancel tdf first week mass sprints...they just keep on crashing on them

Nairito
Haven't had a chance to watch the race yet but it sounds like it was a pretty epic climb, and a good two fingered salute to those who doubt his climbing ability.
Snow seems to bring out the best in him - Vallter 2000 back in 2013, Stelvio and now this!

Agree with most stuff here.
Lets say the stage was to be cancelled today as Greipel and probably other pussies suggested: wasnt there to be much more outcry then? Sure would have been. And how about all the GC-contenders who went to T-A with this exact stage in sight - most of them had probably felt buttfucked and would consider Paris - Nice strongly next year instead of T-A which cancels high altitude finishes at the first glance of a little snow at the final kms.
All I got to say is just stop it. Its just part of the game man |
