Good story. Good luck for the races coming up.

Avin Wargunnson
I had finally time to catch up and i am pleased what i see. Fantastic double stage win for JLD in California, Ryan and Parker were also very active, shame about tha unlucky fall for Dale. Smile
Good luck for the next stages in Austria, against that crazy colombians...
I'll be back

@Jakstar22: Good to hear you like the story.
@Avin: Hope it was worth it. Yeah, crazy Columbians...Buenahora is more than twice as old as Eastman. Grin

Oberösterreich-Rundfahrt

Stage 2 - Wels - Altheim (191,5km)

This stage should end in a sprint finish and so our only chance is to get into the break of the day. The first half has some hilly terrain, while the 2nd half is on a circuit, which is totally flat.

Gavin Mannion is our rider for todays stage. He was able to get into the 4 rider break. Unfortunately he had to chase them solo for some kilometers which of course let him spend a lot of energy quite early.
Actually Avis was supposed to find his way into the breakaway but after 2-3 unsuccessful trials we changed our tactic.

90km and almost 7min advance for them. I stay in the first half of the peloton next to my teammates saving energy.
The sprinter teams already took full control now with LKT (Arndt), Chipotle (Van Hoff) and GIOS (Perez Arrieta). These three might be the best sprinters in a pretty weak field.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/OR_2_13.jpg

With 17km left Mannion is caught as first. Itera doing the pace again trying to keep Chernetski out of any danger.

In the following sprint it was the Spaniard Perez Arrieta from the Greek team GIOS winning the stage ahead of Thömel and Skjerping.

I had a calm day until the finish finishing as 42nd. But most important I was able to save some energy for tomorrow, where I want to do something. Just have to hope for the peloton to allow it.

Considering that you never expected much from this race, Dale Parker's performance must surely make you happy Wink

Dale Parker making a good race in Austria.

Thanks both.

I still have not decided yet how to plan for next season and the transfer time is coming closer. Wink
One thing, that is sure, is that I will stay with the countries, that have been there before. So focus on American riders but also Australians and Belgiums.

At the moment I don`t even know, if I will stay in CT as I actually planned or step up to PCT after what Joe did in California. Now with changing to Extreme it should be harder as I am at the moment ~20 of all PCT/CT teams but except for California I had not much races to collect points. All the mountain races like Utah, Columbia, USA Pro Cycling and 3-4 more still to come. So if I continue collecting points on extreme in the mountains as well, I need to get better transfer riders than planned and probably more than a ~74 sprinter that I had in minds.

So stay tuned for more updates. First transfer news will probably come after Columbia. With a parallel mountain race there as well, I should have more knowledge of the next season and will know by then how much quality I need.

Stage 3 - Altmünster - St. Georgen im Attergau (148,8km)
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/OR_3_2-1408.jpg

Today is the day for me. I am no longer a danger in the overall and so I picked this stage for joining the break. Let`s hope the peloton isn`t going too fast and will give us a chance.
GC wise it`s up to Dale to bring the top10 home. It won`t be very easy as there are still 15 riders within the same time and even some later riders still have chances. So Dombrowski, Mannion and Avis will fully support him today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/OR_3_3.jpg

Perfect start for me as I was able to be in the group. And with none of us being a danger, we of course hope.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/OR_3_5.jpg

First climb and already lots of chaos in the peloton. Many riders lost contact on the pretty steep Cat.4. Most top riders have been concentrated including our riders. Other riders surprisingly are caught behind now like Fothen (3.) or English (4.). But with more than 117km still to go they will surely come back.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/OR_3_9.jpg

Meanwhile the group became a bit bigger. 8 riders now and with the best placed being more than 5min back, we will try everything to finish first.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/OR_3_11.jpg

50km left and 4min gap for us.
The first of 5 laps is ridden and the peloton is already down to 68 riders. The hills seem to be harder than expected.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/OR_3_11.jpg

Coming to the second last climb it`s again the Columbians attacking first. Felix Cardenas this time with a powerful attack. Several riders try to follow and so a small group is ahead of the peloton.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/OR_3_15.jpg

Chernetski must react of course and attacks. Behind you see Parker still in the peloton not having his best day with Dombrowski doing the pace for him.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/OR_3_17.jpg

I am caught by the Cardenas group while some former breakaway riders are still a bit ahead. It was a tough day in the end, but most important was that I tested my legs and they were pretty good today.
Chernetski is already 1min behind with 15km to go while Parker is another 30s back with Dombrowski and Avis still with him.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/OR_3_19.jpg

Joe is doing an excellent job bringing Dale closer to the Chernetski group.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/OR_3_21.jpg

With 4km to go I am back to Dale and supporting him.
The situation is like 8 riders in front including Cardenas and Chernetski, then a group of 4 just ahead with Fothen and a bit later our 12 rider group.
Still chances of a top10 as some guys that finished great on the first stage are already behind while others that are no danger are ahead of us.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/OR_3_24.jpg

Berry with a great win. The US American of the Chipotle team is a great prospect for hilly races. He was the fastest in the end and wins ahead of Zakarin, who was the strongest Itera rider today.
But also you can easily see that there was quite a huge gap to the next the first 8 were counted with the same time, which gives Chernetski the race win while Berry must be happy with the 2nd.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/OR_3_25.jpg

The 3 of us worked hard on the last kilometers and finished together with a bigger group sprinting for 9th. Due to our work we finished in the back of this group but taking care that Dale keeps his 10th overall. Well done. More couldn`t have been expected after the race break.

For me this race was mediocre. I was in a break, but couldn`t perform as well as in other races although I must admit that this race is more for the climbing puncheurs I guess. Still 26th overall, which is not bad for a preparation race.

I will be back for the Flèche Ardennaise later this month and maybe already a bit better in form then. It`s the last race before the National Championships, so I better come into form quick. Wink

Miguel98
10th place for Parker. Not bad. Ryan give everything in this last stage and still climbed some places on the GC. Good luck for the Flèche Ardennaise.

roturn
Thanks Miguel. Top10 indeed quite nice. The 26th is okay.

Flèche Ardennaise

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/FlArd_logo.jpg

The Flèche Ardennaise is a one day cycling classic in the province Liege. It`s held the first time in 1966 and has some famous winners such as Voeckler, Fedrigo or Bakelants.
Record winner is Ruslan Gryschenko, who won it in 2000 and 2001.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/FlArd_1-1955.jpg

The route is not as hard as in other years so a lot of sprinters are also here to hope for an easier race.
The hardest part is already in the middle of the stage and in the end only small hills, so the attacks must be really powerful then.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/FlArd_team.jpg

Ian Boswell will lead us here as he has the best form. We will wait until the last climbs and attack there. With 1km to go a last small hill has to be passed and maybe this is the perfect time for an attack.
With Parker, Mannion or myself we have three riders for the breakaway.
Brown, Craddock, Stuyven and Atkins complete the roster and will have a helper role.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/FlArd_Startlist.jpg

According to the officials the sprinters are favored in this years event. So the Belgians surely hope for Van Staeyen, who is the top favourite.
With Thomas Degand even a former winner is at the start. The Belgium puncheur won the race in 2010.

Miguel98
I hope Ryan makes a good result in Flèche, Let's hope for the best of Ian to win this.

Ian Butler
I can see it ending in a sprint, but not necessarily Wink

sutty68
Nice to see the rest of the guys looking after Parker so as to keep his top ten in the GC Wink

Margh Norway
Kewl. I usually just scim through some stories... but here was nicely surprised by the splendid presentation of the austrian race I once made (was it laggy in stage 3? much water in it...). Never expected to see it appear in a story as a less important tour.
I'll definitely keep an open eye for the latest events in Ryan's development from here on! Smile

roturn
@Miguel: Hope so, too.
@Ian: Unfortunately yes. Not looking as hard as I thought it would be when picking the race.
@sutty: I was already thinking he would lose it with 12 guys ahead. Luckily some of them have been bad placed riders.
@Margh Norway: It was a nice race but not laggy. Probably not 100% lag free just like every other stage. Nothing in comparison with the one California stage, which is indeed laggy. Wink This is the advantage of PCM12, that also the smallest races get chances to be ridden. Grin

Flèche Ardennaise

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/FlArd_30.jpg

Together with 3 other riders I was able to create a small gap to the peloton and although it looked pretty good for a moment the attempt was doomed when more riders attacked and so the peloton caught us again.
Well, this doesn`t really count as breakaway appearance I guess.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/FlArd_32.jpg

After the first easier climb a new group of 6 were having a gap of more than 2min. Obviously this is the BotD. And good to see Dale Parker in there. He has a good season so far and felt good, so he just tried it in the next attacks.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/FlArd_34.jpg

Topsport Vlaanderen is doing the pace. Obviously they have a lot of trust in Van Staeyen and are sure that the sprinter will be able to come over the mountains.
This is definitely possible. The Belgian is one of the best sprinters in the Pro Continental division and might have a shot in a World Tour team sooner or later.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/FlArd_36.jpg

37km left and the gap is already down to 2min. So although we have Parker in front still fighting we decided to make the race also a bit harder behind, as it might be the only chance to get rid of the fast men.
After the early attempts it`s again me trying to get a gap.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/FlArd_38.jpg

Van Goolen immediately followed and together we might have a chance now. I really felt good today although my form is still mediocre. A good sign for next weeks Nationals where I am nominated for both events.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/FlArd_40.jpg

It just lasted 5km until we were back in the pack. What a pity as this looked pretty promising.
Still 150 riders with only a few hills left. Looking indeed like the sprinters could make it.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/FlArd_42.jpg

But don`t forget about Dale in front. He is really fighting today going up the last real hill. 13km to go and still 1'12 advance. Can he surprise the sprinter teams? The group is already down to 2. Only the Columbian Álvarez Paniagua is able to hold his back wheel.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/FlArd_44.jpg

The peloton also climbs the narrow road and Vanbilsen attacks. Also Cornu, Ista and Van Goolen try it.
Due to the narrow roads Boswell wasn`t able to attack here. But I was still in the first rows, so I just tried it once again.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/FlArd_46.jpg

We have opened a 30s gap to the peloton, while Dale is still another 60s ahead.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/FlArd_49.jpg

But actually the sprinter teams had everything under control. First they caught my group and later also Dale. So everything looks like a sprint now.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/FlArd_51.jpg

Hovelynck and Van Staeyen are in a perfect position. Also Boswell is brought to the front by Mannion.
Just going left in the next corner a steep climb expects us. This is the position where Boswell planned his attack to surprise the sprinters.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/FlArd_53.jpg

But no chance. Unfortunately the sprint already started just ahead of the corner with all sprinters flying over the ascent. If the hill would have been 1km earlier it might have worked.
So Van Staeyen with an easy win while Boswell had no chance in the sprint falling back on the 15th with Stuyven on 17.

So the team goal of a top 10 failed due to the easier course in the end. We can`t really be unhappy as we showed some offensive riding today and at least tried everything to make this race as hard as possible.

I finished as 67th today, by far out of the aimed top20. But still I feel I had a good race. I attacked a lot and gave everything until the end. Unfortunately the sprinter teams have been too strong today.

From Belgium we immediately travel to Greenville, where the Nationals will be held next week. My form seems to be okay, so I hope I can do something there. Goodbye from here and stay tuned for the next blog.

Great report and very good riding. Too bad, the hills didn't cause a split in the peloton.

Dale give it all, shame that that the sprinters had to go trough the hills.

At least you tried hard enough. Topsport Vlaanderen knew what they were doing Smile

Good Luck in the Nationals, hope you have a great ride Wink

Thanks all.
It was a bit unlucky as it looked like Parker could finish top2, but after the last hill they really accelerated again.

USA Cycling National Championships

One of the highlights this season. It`s always something special to ride your National championships, in especially as you don`t ride with all the stars like Farrar, Vandevelde or Leipheimer every day. These guys already reached a lot in their career and won in the biggest races. We as a very young team still need to learn a lot and maybe some of us will be up there in 10 years as well.
In the Nationals it`s often the big against the small. Teams like Garmin, BMC or RadioShack of course have the quality to control and dominate the race. But several small teams with many riders of course try to surprise by beating them.

While the TT is more Craddock`s terrain, I am looking forward for the road race. The profile looks pretty tough and we rode the course earlier this year. It`s actually not too hard and so we must take care of Tyler Farrar as America`s top sprinter. But with a good attack on the climb everything is possible and he first has to follow.

All seven of us participate in both events. My main focus is on the road race, where I still wait for the team tactics. One sure thing is that Joe and Ian will lead us here. But in especially riders like me or Mannion should also look for their chance.
