STAGE 9: Pau - Biarritz 153 KM

One of many flat stages, in a row, separated only by a rest day.
Yousef continues to show well.
Yousef Al Ghanim got into the large break again today, you certainly can't say we are not trying. All things considered I rate him 10/10 for his contributions to the team in this TDF so far.
Getting Yousef into the break may seem small fry, especially after we have finished on multiple GT podiums. But, back in Qatar such a feat is very well received. Expect Camels on the mountains !
The races loses a jersey!
Once the break was absorbed, largely due to the formidable Lampre train, a crash a ways down the peloton takes out a few riders. The biggest casualty being the polka dots leader, who would not get back up. Yes Thomas Dekker would abandon after the crash.
Boasson Hagen sprints to another win.
The Norwegian takes his second stage win here and consolidates his lead in the points classification. Lampre had the perfect leadout, again, but Matthews could not prevent Boasson Hagen coming round him in the dying meters.

Flashback #9:
Qatar Optics' first delve into the big cobbled classics in Belgium could not have gone much better. Gallopin finishes 4th at Flanders and 8th at P-R to justify our inclusion in the historic classic races. Such results soon gained us great popularity in the Belgian cycling world and, was no doubt, a foundational for Duvel Beer coming on board down the line.
@ sutty That's more like it! No, in all seriousness, a top 20 would be fantastic for Ahmed.
@ Shonak - Seeing Duran win brings back many happy memories. He is past his best, but still capable of great moments like on stage 8. At least 3 wins in each GT is some feat, no doubt he will appear in one of these flashbacks.

Can't say that Dekker's abandonment won't help Al Sulimani in his quest for KoM glory.
Al Ghanim sure using his chance to show himself. They can turn into heroes here and Camels on the mountains, well can't wait for them.

Another straight forward sprinter stage greets us after yesterday being a rest day.
Yes, we make that break again!
Today Al Yazeedi is the aggressor who represents us in the break today, all of our guys are really pulling their weight here. Superb! Although it is admirable, we were frustrated by the break being pulled back by the rampant peloton ahead of the finale.
Lampre's Lead-out Destroys the Field!
The sprint train for Lampre here is quickly being talked about as one of the most dominant ever to grace the TDF. With 200 meters to go Swift has ensured Lampre's sprinter, Matthews, is well ahead of the field save for Howard.....
Matthews takes it today!
Once again the power of the lead-out proves to be the undoing of the opposition as Matthews takes one of the more convincing sprint wins here, thus narrowing the gap in the points classification.

Flashback #10:
2019 was the first pro season for Roger Bruyere. He really did add an extra dimension to this story through showcasing his own thoughts and opinions on himself and the team.
Now, in 2021, the guys at Duvel Beer have decreed that they will not renew the contract of Roger Bruyere for 2022. This is a real shame because I am sure he has the ability to be a top rider.
In fact I am so sure of this that I am to do a slight U-turn on my Qatar Optics retirement, I will be coaching the team at San Sebastian and the Vuelta with Roger being the team leader for GC in the latter race. Though I shall not be recording this in this story as I remain adamant that this story ends with this race, the 2021 TDF.
@ Shonak - On that stage when Dekker took the KOM lead if only Al Sulimani would have made the break..... if only.... then there would have been a slight chance of taking the polka dots to keep.

It is always nice to see the Qatar jersey in the break

It may helps your objective to get in many breaks but I find those flat stage a bit boring if not for super women hanging around
Guess the big guns have to recover a bit after their previous effort in the mountain.
Good news is that it brings each day Al Ghanim closer to a Top 20 finish

Interesting about Vuelta. Hopefully if Bruyere finds success in Spain, there may be one or two posts about it though.

STAGE 11: Bergerac - Limoges 149 KM
Stage Favourites:
***Boasson Hagen(FDJ) **Matthews(FAR) *Tsatevitch(B&O)
Al Sulimani claims the one and only KOM point on offer today.
What can we do more? We once again get into the break, this time with Al Sulimani. We were a bit spiteful that the peloton would chase down the break again, but it was to be expected. We are all together with around 15 KM to go.
Drunken fans are oblivious .....
as a large crash, some forty riders back in the peloton, takes out a load of riders. Thoughts were quickly cast to the GC men, were any big guns involved?
Yes. There were.
France Loses Hope...
The revelation of this TDF, Robin Girardin, after being poorly positioned by his continental team came down heavily. Whilst the likes of Mollema and Schleck, who were caught up, came back quickly the younger Frenchman didn't.
There would be no making it back for Girardin. He would lose his podium place and drop down to 8th and in many people's eyes he loses any chance of a GC victory.
For us Ahmed Al Ghanim successfully avoided the crash. The pace is really high coming into the sprint and 13 riders distance themselves from the rest.
Matthews no.3!
Matthews picks up win no.3, the lead out was once again PERFECT by Swift. Who would almost certainly be winning some stages if he was sprinting for himself. Matthews moves into the lead in a close and exciting fight for the points jersey.
Ibai Salas, has a super unexpected day in GC, finishes 11th some '28 ahead of the most of the other contenders after being well martialled by his team. Today may well turn out to be a pivotal day in the GC.

Flashback #11:
The 2019 Giro was our first GT and what a GT it was. Kritskiy was in scintillating form taking three victories, looking incredible in the TTs and in the hills. Going into the last stage he was even on points with Cattaneo for the lead in the points competition...
But, thanks to corrupt and dubious organisers we were 'screwed' out of the points jersey on the final stage.
@ Shonak - That is a fought. Once I finish this tour I will advance through the seasons 10* faster, at least, so a lot will change.
@ duxili - We are just like the likes of Saur/ Cofidis in recent years, in dire need to get our buts in the break!
@ sutty - It is becoming an iconic image of the 2021 TDF!

Of course Kritskiy has to be mentioned.
Too bad for Girardin about the crash.

STAGE 12: Bourges - Autun 168 KM
Stage Favourites:
***Kittel(EUS) **Matthews(LAM) *Boasson Hagen(FDJ)
Now up to today in this TDF we have been in 90% of the breaks. We didn't make the break today, so of course, the break would be allowed to get away! Seriously, the hilly run in didn't perfectly suit the sprinters which gives a decent reason for the break being allowed to stay away, that and some quality riders made the break.
Stuyven takes a strong win.
After all most two weeks of racing fatigue is starting to kick in. This was obvious in the break as Stuyven clearly had way too much in the tank for the opposition as he rode away in the final kilometre. Having said that Waeytens finished the fastest and will be ruing he didn't go with his compatriot.
5'01 later....
Matthews consolidates his lead in the points classification by leading the peloton home thus gaining 8 more points to take his lead to 13 points over his Norwegian arch enemy. For us, Al Ghanim stays out of trouble and continues his quest for a good top 20 in the GC.

Flashback 12:
After picking up one stage win in our debut TDF, a TDF which was marred by that awful bus crash, we marched towards the Vuelta. Blissful of what we were about to achieve. We thought Ion Izagirre, having won races such as the Vuelta a Portugal and finished highly in the Seis Dias de Marco , might be able to challenge for a top 15. We never expected him to be leading by 2'00 in the GC as the Vuelta reached the third week.
@ sutty - Yeah the jerks!
@ Shonak - A shame about stage 11, it really has ruined the GC fight.
-What a rider he has been for Qatar Optics. He would certainly get a card if we had legendary Qatar Optics trading cards!

Perfect opportunity missed here for a stage win.
We didn't make the break today, so of course, the break would be allowed to get away!
Of course. It's usual PCM trolling.
Qatar Optics trading cards... that would fit perfectly into this story.

STAGE 13: Dole - Lyon 197 KM
Stage Favourites:
***Kittel(EUS) **Guardini(YTE) *Matthews(LAM)
The last sprinter stage before a TT, a hilly stage and two mountainous stages in a row.
The break slip away.
For much of the day Gallopin and Waeytens were apart of the five man lead break, five more riders tried but could never bridge across to the strong group.
We didn't make the break today. Our four remaining riders, all Qatari, do not like the flat too much so we thought they should save their legs for the upcoming stages whilst looking after Ahmed Al Ghanim.
The Belgian champ, Ghyselinck, putting in a late attack.
Strong baroudeurs tried to get away on the flat towards the finish but to no avail. That Lampre team is just too strong.
A Crash!
A smaller crash then that on stage 11 takes place with 10 kilometres to go, but it involves some big names. Fabio Felline, 4 time winner of Milan San Remo, is forced to withdraw. GC wise Andy Schleck is the biggest casualty, he goes down hard and would not make it back on to the peloton.
Congrats to our team for, once again, keeping Ahmed Al Ghanim out of trouble.
Win no.4 for Matthews.
The Aussie takes another commanding win for what will be remembered as one of the most dominant sprint trains in the TDF. Boasson Hagen was beaten down to 5th today, with pure sprinters Kroupis and Howard finishing ahead, and therefore is now 35 points behind Matthews in the points competition.
Andy Schleck, who won his record 5th tour de Suisse earlier this year, loses huge time. He loses 4'55! Ahmed Al Ghanim leapfrogs Schleck into 16th in GC ahead of the TT.

Flashback #13:
After falling Pinot, didn't suffer too much, and went on to win the Vuelta with a comfortable margin in the end. However, Ion Izagirre battled to the last and ended up finishing 2nd overall in his stand out GT. Kritskiy ended the Vuelta with a great TT victory and we were going to be riding in the WT in 2020. With great investment in the team we aimed to be one of the top teams in cycling in our first WT year.
@ Shonak - Maybe. But Stuyven does have 80 hill so I doubt Al Sulimani could have taken him + I don't think I expected the break to be allowed to get away before it was raced.
Would be nice to make some trading cards, like you did briefly once upon a time. If only I can make a decent template.

I made those trading cards back then over a website. A quick google search and you should have them.
Too bad for Schleck, but not too bad for QO. Maybe Al Ghanim can manage even a Top 15? Well, dare to dream. Lots of crashes so far at le Tour though.

+1 seems like the bike have not improved their stability
Really wonder how you did your effect were the peloton is passing like plane in front of a couple of spectators, impressive !
Can't wait for the next stages to see the "real" action for GC again

STAGE 14: Givors - Vienne 29 KM
Stage Favourites:
***van Garderen(JDE) **Phinney(EML) *Craddock(JDE)
After a huge array of stages favouring the sprinters, which has been great watching to see the battle between Matthews and Boasson Hagen for the points jersey, eyes now turn back to the GC with a pretty long TT. Ahmed Al Ghanim finished the longer opening stage TT in 11th place, it will be interesting if he could live up to that performance again.
Damien Cotte
Cotte has shown well in this TDF, despite being the laterne rouge. He has figured in many breaks showing that typical French spirit.
For much of the race day the time of Tom Dumoulin looks unbeatable. Around 100 riders started after him unable to beat his time of 41'28. Stage winner Kittel finishes '18 down and then a raft of quality TT riders start and it looks ominous for the time of Dumoulin.
Benoit Jarrier puts in a solid ride to finish at 40'34 to depose of the Dutchman at the top of the rankings. With a change in the weather many now expect the winning time to be well under 40'00.
Not a great day for Euskaltel!
Spanish champ Castroviejo was the Basque team's best finisher today and he finished 43rd! Not a great day for them but they will be content with Kittel's stage victory.
American Phinney is the next to come home the quickest. He put in a big chuck into Jarrier's time and finished at 39'48.
Boasson Hagen won't give up!
Boasson Hagen is a great man against the clock but few expected the Norwegian TT champ to challenge for the win today, but he would. He goes faster than Phinney with a time of 39'40. He would not win today, he would finish 4th, but he would claim 13 points to reduce the gap to Matthews to just 22 points! What a fight for the green jersey we have on our hands!
American champ Craddock ensures Boasson Hagen doesn't have hopes for the win for long. He finishes at 39'05 and takes the lead with a great looking time.
Ahmed Al Ghanim
Ahmed rides a strong and consistent TT for us today. Crucially he catches and passes his 2 minute man, Marais, on his way to a solid 21st place on the stage. He consolidates his 16th place in GC.
TT man of this TDF
Tejay van Garderen is defiantly the TT man of this TDF. He has the honour of winning both TTs here. He sets solid times on his way to winning the stage by '38 over his teammate Craddock. A great TT by the American in his stand out GT moves him back up to second in the GC.
Ibai Salas, did what he had to do. He increases his lead in the GC today as Barton could only muster a 19th place finish, losing the better part of 2 minutes to the yellow jersey. Salas looks destined of a first TDF win after this stage. One can only wonder what would have happened if Girardin never fell.

Flashback #14:
2020 was here. We had both the world champions (Kritskiy/ Vanendert) and were ready to tear up the WT. We sure did that! Fabio Felline won the inaugural edition of the 'Desert Classic' race hosted in Qatar before going on to win the Tirreno and his third Milan San Remo title. Sicard won Paris Nice for us before Tony Gallopon managed two fourth places in Flanders and Roubaix. What a first half to the season! Big results in the big races were everywhere for us.
Cyclemania, the world's premier cycling trading card game, has taken the world by storm for some years now. I have not taken too much notice of it untill now, however, this morning Eddie (my son) informed me that they were releasing 8 'special' trading cards under the aegis of Qatar Optics Legends . Well I never!
Ahmed Al Ghanim (Legend card):
Fabio Felline (Legend card):
@ Shonak - Not too sure about that Shonak. Ahmed could only do that if he were to get into a successful late breakaway and the chances of him being allowed to get away aren't great. A top 20 would be great. (A shame Salas didn't go down in one of the many crashes!) - Making a few trading cards!
@ duxili - Download GIMP 2. Open a screenshot: right click on image; click on filters; go to distort and then select wind. voilà.
@ sutty - Not the most taxing TDF.

STAGE 15: Vienne - Grenoble 197 KM
Stage Favourites:
***Salas(HLE) **Duarte(EML) *Eijssen(HLE)
A day in the mountains. However, with the last peak coming with 30 KM to go a large group should contest the finish.
Barton coming back to the main group after puncturing.
It was a strange day today. Once the early two man break was caught with 110 KM to go we had no breakaway.
So Ahmed Al Ghanim attacked. He would gain 5 KOM points over a peak with 85 KM to go but would not be allowed to get away by the bunch. He attacked again, this time on the penultimate climb, and gained 5 more KOM points. But, once more, he was not allowed to get away.
Chamrousse: On the final climb with 30 KM to go Ahmed Al Ghanim attacks again!
This time the 1-2 in GC, Salas and Van Garderen, go on the attack with Ahmed. Salas takes the max points on offer and consolidates his lead in the KOM rankings. It is all back to together on the descent. Great attacking by Ahmed nevertheless, a shame it was him against the entire big favourites group.
The favourites group was around 60 riders total once the last climb was conquered. Crucially, concerning the points jersey, Boasson Hagen made the group whilst Matthews did not.
Attacks with 13 KM to go!
On the slightly lumpy run in it was once again Ahmed who animated the race, he made this stage watchable! Ahmed attacked and he was followed by Barton, Salas and three French riders who haven't shown anything in this race so far (Anne, Beauvais and Bardet).
Remy Beauvais attacked the group and managed to get a gap. The rest just looked at each other as the rider from the continental team extended his gap. Well, this came from nowhere!
A win for Fuji!
A shock win for Beauvais, who hasn't appeared in this race before today, really animates the race. You could say that Ahmed could have gone with attack, but Ahmed attacked about 6 times previously and wasn't allowed to get away on any occasion.
Beauvais:
Beauvais wins one day after Bastille day and two days before his 26th birthday. He took the white jersey in last year's TDF.
The Epic battle for the green jersey swings towards Boasson Hagen today. Boasson Hagen won the bunch sprint for second, gaining 40 points. Matthews didn't make the lead group and gains no points on the day.

Flashback #15:
2020 saw the introduction of our continental team, Qatar Optics continental . The team was and continues to be a much loved initiative where predominantly our younger riders are trained. It is great to know several of our current riders rode for our continental team last season.

After a few stages of missing the break, we made it today. Al Sulimani made the break and was intent on scooping up as many KOM points as possible.
Al Sulimani after picking up some more KOM points.
Al Sulimani did very well today, he managed to pick up 20 KOM points. This would be enough to put him second in that category, only behind the yellow jersey, so Al Sulimani would be wearing the polka dots, once again, on stage 17.
No one in the break troubled the GC, however, the peloton catch the last of the break before the final climb.
Salas, the yellow jersey, is the first to attack. Feeling good, clearly, he is after a second stage win.
Only the veteran and stage winner, Jeannesson, is able to ride across to Salas. The final kilometre is quickly reached, Salas kicks again, and Salas leaves Jeannesson in his dust.
A stage win fit for a yellow jersey.
Salas, for the first time in this TDF, looked really dominant as he stormed up the final climb for his second win. Barring and accident the yellow jersey looks his for sure. Jeannesson comes home at '20 whilst a group of big favourites come home at '30.
Al Ghanim loses 1'16 on the day, he loses some time and gains some time to those around him in the GC. He sticks in 16th place.
The battle for the points jersey came off the boil today. Matthews claimed one point to reduce the gap to Boasson Hagen to 17 points.

Flashback #16:
Duran on his way to a stage win and 2nd overall in the Giro.
Our GTs were a mixed bag in 2020. Duran finished the Giro and the Vuelta on the podium, however, Sicard could only manage a top 10 in the TDF. We were consistent performers in the GTs and as a result gained a hefty total of WT points.
