also why is the course 10.2 miles? why not just stop at 10 to make it a standard distance?

I got 5th at the Wente Crit. 30 somthin riders lined up for the juniors race. Lots of attacks, one big team (8-9 guys) a couple smaller teams (2-3) I ended up on the front for 2 laps chasing, off the front for a lap and then fighting for position ahead of the final turn and the last long drag. A solo rider won it followed quickly by a pack of 20 or so guys. Not much I could have done having only 2 teammates (1 being a little tyke and not a factor) one attack after the other from Specialized Junior Racing.

I did another crit today. Probably .8 miles long course. Start on a long straight, slight uphill, 2 quick 90 right hand turns then a left 90 onto a 23 percent hill 100 meters long. False flat at the top, then 2 more rights onto a long descent to the finishing straight. Bad pavement on all the roads except the hill itself. In the rain it was sketch. I was trying to push the big ring up the hill and would lose traction.
I made the selection for the first 5 laps of the 4's race but after I was popped I sat up. Dropped out to save it for the juniors race.
In the juniors race I was still trying to push too hard of a gear and got dropped. After I finally dialed it in(39x23) it started going better. That was half way through and I began lapping riders. I kept going hard even if I'd been dropped cause there was an outside chance I could get back on. After it became clear I wasn't going to catch back on (I saw the pack going up the hill from the start straght) I was racing to not be lapped, which hasn't happened to me in a long time. I ended up getting some good photo ops and my coach said I would have had easily sat in the pack if I was pushing the right gear up the hill the all race and finished only half a lap down. It was good enough for 11th. My teammate was 2nd and the other was 5th(skinny climbers on some really good form)
I go on a rest week monday, do a race saturday (another crit, lots of those at this time of year) then a mid week crit, then district championship road race.
More importantly than. My race, my teammate won a free pizza from a fancy returaunt. We sat at the bar while waiting and I hit on the waitress.

Did the Baraboo Road Race today in Wisconsin. 45 Miles, with 2 brutal 1 mile climbs at 8%.
Made the selection of 9, but had to settle for 9th. Didn't hydrate properly and started to cramp. SHIT!
Tomorrow is a flat, fast criterium. Going for some Cat 2 upgrade points! |

Sunday, 3 May 2009 - Two More Down
I meant to post a lot sooner than this, it seems I keep looking at other cyclist's blogs, but forget to write my own. And with my ever increasing fan base, I know I should keep peeps updated more!
The Sunday following Totnes Vire, I had the Reading Cycling Club Spring Road Race. Unfortunately the race wasn't as long as the name, and so was fairly easy peasy. Usually the race goes up a kilometre long climb at 12%, which nicely shells the bunch and all the weak shit riders out the back. Or, if that doesn't do it, the 3 km 4% drag afterwards does. The plan had been to attack over the top of the climb on lap 2, and again with a lap to go if I didn't get away in a break then. However, the race route changed due to gas-works. Typical eh? So instead we got a headwinded rolling road, with a shallower climb on it. It was still a hard climb for most, but not quite hard enough to shell enough people in my opinion. I attacked over the top of the climb like I planned on lap 2, and started to chase down a break of 3, about 200m ahead of me. However, I couldn't close the gap, and looking over my shoulder, the bunch was chasing me down as per usual. So I decided to wait for another chance and sat up. Again, on the last time up the climb, I put in a couple of digs, but guys were too happy to sit on your wheel, not do a turn, and hope to survive. So no getting away, which is fairly usual in 3rd cat racing. So, with about 3-4 miles to go to the finish, I decided to do the team mate stuff, and hit the front, keeping the pace relatively high. Or high enough that noone wanted to attack, which is the plan. With about 300m to go to the finish line, of course everyone piled around me, and Packs (a team mate) took 5th in the race. Good effort on my behalf saw me be rewarded with a tenner for the lead out (race entry paid for!)
That was the end of part 1 of my season. When I sat down to plan my season February time, I divided it into 3 parts. The theory was race less, train more, and race harder when I do. So far, it's been working. I feel and am a lot stronger, fitter, and more able to actually attack in races rather than just sit in. The first part of the season was train for a month, then hit April for races. Reading was the target, the aim to get a good result. Whilst the result wasn't ideal, it does show I've come a long way since I started 3/4 years ago. The next part of the season (2 - for those that can't count) is all about the Ras de Cymru. The Ras (for short) is a 5 day, 6 stage, race in Wales at the start of July. Costing £200, it isn't the cheapest event in the race calender, and the aim is this year to get in a break on one day or other. With that in mind, the strategy is to train like mad again during May and June. Also to use the "local" circuit race at Ilton to get some more power/strength/teeth grinding practice/etc in. I'll be doing all the National level races I can do, rather than just the 3rd cat races. Basically it means I'm on the limit pretty much all race, it's like a harder chain gang. On a chain gang it's hard because I go through a do a turn or ten, in the National circuits it's hard because I can't go and do a turn it's so fast. Instead of 3rd cats who are happy just to sit at a constant speed, chasing down everything and anything, the Elite race jumps about with the constant aim of getting away in a break. This is fairly wearing on the legs, as I found out on the Thursday just past.
Ilton, or Merryfield Airfield, is a Navy (!!) Airport, and is an operational base (or so we keep getting told), so generally speaking, is bloomin' windy. Luckily this thursday wasn't too windy, just a bit wet. Not really much more to say about the race, other than it was hard. I got in a move at one point about half way through with a guy called Will Bergfelt, who rides for Sports Beans - Wiler team. Basically all the trappings of a pro team, just paid less. They're still ripping it up against the pro teams in the UK though. Unfortunately for me, we were chased down (surprise surprise), and I wasn't in the fittest shape to keep attacking whilst on the limit.
The entire aim of doing these races is that each race I do, I try to do more, eventually I'll be on fire one of these days, and get in the winning move. When that happens, I know I've earnt my placing. There is no hiding in the harder races. None.
I haven't been out this weekend, can't really think of a valid excuse, other than seeing Jackie boy run the Great West Run today. So I'll be popping out tomorrow with Jamie (the least stylish cyclist known to man) and Matt (who's moving to Essex to become a cycle coach in a few weeks - in other words, one less guy to ride with next year, so far I'm down to just Jamie. It could be a long and hard winter).
Until I write again... toodles!

This past weekend I took 7th out of 14 riders in the 15-18 Juniors category at a race called the Bunny Hop. Not bad considering it was my second race. |

La Crosse criterium day after Baraboo Road Race. Took 8th in the Cat 3's after being beaten by teams with 4 guys who lapped the field.
Cat 1,2,3 race. I came in 25th and was the only 3 to finish! |

Up the Hill(23%), after I was already off the back. The kid in yellow is several times a national champ(age 14) and he is pretty damn fast. He managed to stick to my wheel for 3 laps before he dropped off, the other guy was only on my wheel briefly. I felt strong but made some dumb mistakes.

Just ahead of the hill.

well done guys. hopefully we'll start getting some top 3 places soon. Tomzk is still the only person to score so far. Chrica i think got a third place somewhere but still hasn't posted official results to claim his PCM Racing Champ point. |

Hey guys, haven't posted before........been doing a lot of watching and reading...............
My season has gone very well so far...........gone from 3rd CAT to 2nd CAT, earning the last points I needed to move up at Eelmore (another military circuit)....this Wednesday just gone..managed to get 6th in the bunch sprint.........was to far back and had to come through a lot of riders......
Managed a 1st place at Hillingdon where I lead out the sprint from the bottom of the short rise, no one coming past....well happy with that, as you can see
[img-l] https://www.flickr...899241949/ [/img-l]
Had a 2nd,4th and 5th as well this season.....the 5th place ride (Surrey Lge - Dunsfold Aerodrome) was probably one of my best ever.......I attacked three or four times but never managed to get away.......however on the last lap a break of 7 had gone clear, I was back in the bunch and sensing no reaction tried to bridge upto the break......I managed to catch the break just as they started the sprint with 200M to go, by this point I was cream crackered but managed to pass 3 of the break for 5th....
Now the fun really starts as I now will be riding with the Elites and 1st's..........

Oh that's harsh
Due to my considerable girth, gravity and the limited time I get for training (5-6 hours a week) circuit racing suits me..........plus have you seen the BC calendar........it now is mostly circuits........ |

haha, only joking, I have utmost respect for guys who can nail the circuits scene. I am glad to know you realise that you aren't best suited to the road stuff though, some guys think that because they are good at one, that makes them automatically good at the other.
Still, you must be putting those hours to good use to get all those results. Be good to see you suffer at the Hillingdon GP in the next few years eh?

Yeah anything with a big hill is a problem, power climbs not an issue.....Ive done a few Road races where I've placed but courses like Cutmill and the Archer I suffered like a dog......
Well the HIllingdon GP is next weekend, I'm debating to send an entry off.......although there is Goodwood or Castle Combe to choose from on the same weekend and these are EOL..... |

You won't get a place in Hillingdon this late I imagine. Plus it'll be packed with all the pros... go for the easier races
