8th February
---
Gagnieres, we're here of course to begin stage 5 of the Etoile de Besseges, it's also the final stage.
Let's recap the situation i'm in:
1 - Thanks to a good breakaway, i'm leader of the KOM competition. Today i want to defend, and possibly extend my lead.
2 - No stage wins, that needs to change
So, what does todays stage involve? 91km of quite flat roads, 2 small climbs and a sprint finish (probally).
So, Stage 5: Gagnieres - Besseges, let's go:

The start in Gagnieres for the final stage, i personally think it's been a very good race.

Can i defend the KOM jersey today?

I put Mourey into a break to extend lead, so i've come second over the climb, some points in the bag.

Mourey is 1st over the Col du grand chataignier for the second time, it's time to celebrate the sucess as we plunge into Besseges for the finishing circuits.

Kocjan wins the stage

Here's Kocjan on the podium.

Final Competition to wrap up, the teams classification.
AG2R wins this one, we came 14 at +2.02
So, in conclusion, a good race, we've won a KOM jersey which is fantastic. Not a stage win though, which is slightly dissapointing.
Now, we're staying in the region as we head to the Tour Mediterraneen.

At least you've won the KoM jersey in the Étoile, good luck for the
Tour Mediterraneen. |

10th February
---
Hello from La Crau, starting point of the 2009 Tour Mediterranéen. Before we begin, lets get the maths out of the way.
-5 Stages
-626.4km in total.
- 4 Flat Stages
- 1 "Haute Montagne"
Into the route itself then:

Stage 1 - Fairly flat, 2 KOM points, will be a sprint.
Stage 2 - 3 KOM, all early on, after KM81 it's flat all the way, another one for the sprinters.
Stage 3 - This is the decider of the race. We finish on Mont Faron, climbers stage, first hard stage of the year. The winner will be decided here.
Stage 4 - Hilly, possibly a break, but sprinters teams won't have trouble controlling this.
Stage 5 - Flat, sprint fest.
Hurray for Pre-Season French racing?
We've rather enjoyed our February, beats going to far corners of the world such as Qatar and California.
Our February calendar looks like this (after this race):
Tour du Haut-Var
Omloop Het Nieuwsblad
All races will of course be covered in the same detail as you have seen in the TDU and the Etoile.
The European season is now in full swing.

11th February
---
Sitting here in Le Crau makes me think that we need to appreciate what we've got right now. Weather wise, it's great, the riders are loving it compared to the horrible weather in the North and in California. We got it good. However in a few weeks that changes for us as we head to Gent.
Anyway, my mind is 2 weeks ahead, it is of course the Tour Méditerranéen right now. Stage 1 is 120km from La Crau to Hyres. It's a sprinters stage, and we've got Chananel with us. Hutarovich to lead him out, life is good.

Laurent attacks from km0

We go around a roundabout, and Chavanel crashes, DISASTER. We send back half the team to help him back into the peloton.

With 20km to go, getting back into the peloton is a lost cause, so we send Joly up the road at a KOM point, he's in +5 form.

A sure win stage (hopefully) has turned into a disaster, and we have to resort to this to even think about a win.

10km to go!

It was all brought back and Breschel wins.

A good sprint from the Dane takes him to his first win of the year.

Winning stage 1 = Automatic Yellow jersey.

I think there are more sprint possibilities at the Tirreno so you should send Chavanel there. |

Thats the plan, sprinter to Tirreno, best team though will be at Paris-Nice.

12th February

The 36th Tour Méditerranéen continues today with a 135km stage, we begin in La Londe, go over some hills then descent towards the coast and enjoy a flat final 50km or so into La Garde. The riders however, they're more downbeat. Chavanel particually, he was gutted with his crash yesterday, however he says he will carry on and attempt to win a stage. Thats good news for us
Meeting with the organisers this morning they said that they expect a breakaway to take up the KOM points, then a real sprint finish. "It could be good" were the exact words. I agree, it could be and probally will be.

So a break of 5 riders made it away today

2 climbs into the day and we asked Meersman to come collect the bidons, thats his job this race.

Ahh, now we believe this is the Tour Méditerranéen!

Pérez takes 16 points here, putting him in the Virtual KOM jersey.

The scenery here is just fantastic.

At the sprint finish, Breschel wins again!

The Saxo Bank team told me that they are delighted, real dominance here so far.

Kissy kissy...
So, another stage, another defeat. Chavanel is comming into form, he'll be riding the Giro and Tour de France, he also said he'd like to do well at the Milano-San Remo.

Rousset hosts the Start of the 3rd stage of the race, 100km away is the finish in Mt Faron, this stage should sort out the final winner of the overall. Today we hope to attack with Joly (afterall the organisers paid us money to bring him!) and hopefully win the stage. But this is cycling and really anything can happen.

Velo leads over the Col de L'Espigoulier

Jalabert joins velo in the front group.

oops, Hutarovich is dropped.

At the bottom of the Mount Faron there is a group of Joly, Danielson and Trofimov chasing the front group.

And yet, Horner comes from behind and takes the win, how?

Horner gets the stage win, and possible the Maillot Jaune.

Horner, is leading the race, but the margin is small, anything could still happen.

Francaise des Jeux is leading the team classification.

The next 2 stages are flat, 20 seconds behind on GC, we'd love to try and improve on that. It's unlikely, but let's "let the road do the talking"

Is clear that this isn't your Tour Méditerranéen, but still has been a decent Tour. |

Sorry, with the TDF i've not had much time to carry this story on, i've not forgotten about it. It's still here and living.
The aim is to get the various presentations i have to do out of the way (due Monday) and maybe finish the Tour Med. this weekend.
Things often don't go to plan with me though
