National Tour Stage 1 Preview
The Profile

Today's stage is 213 km of flat terrain on the island of Corsica. It starts in Porto Vecchio and heads along the island coastline towards Bastia. There is one KOM sprint after 45 km and the intermediate sprint is located after around 140 km. The stage is expected to end in a mass sprint as the sprinters will need to take advantage of every chance they get to pick up points towards the ultra classification. The weather calls for crosswinds at 40 kmh gusting at 50 kmh.
The Favorites

Andre Greipel has the best leadout train in the race with Jens Voigt, Tony Martin, Gerald Ciolek, John Degankolb, and Marcel Kittel there is no reason that the Gorilla shouldn't be in the perfect position at the end of the stage, can he deliver for Germany?

Mark Cavendish is back in his national team colours, the last time he wore them, he won the one day world champion's jersey. The Manx Missile is the fastest man in the world, but the question mark is his split team who will also be riding for GC favorite Chris Froome, who will hope to avoid trouble in the crosswinds the forecasters have predicted.
The Outsiders

Matt Goss is the fastest man down under, but can he win in a major race? Australia hopes so as there isn't much expected out of Cadel Evans.

Alexander Kristoff is another fast man who will benefit from a good leadout, with Thor Husovd and Eddie the Boss, Kristoff should be delivered in a good position, but does the young Norwegian have the top end speed to keep up with Cavendish?
If Andre Greipel has a bad day and misses a split, Marcel Kittel could be a candidate to win the first stage.

Nacer Bouhanni is the hope for France in the first stage, the nation is hosting the first National Tour and the weight of the nation is on the young sprinter to put in a good showing.

The National Tour Stage 1 Recap Show

Welcome Ladies and Gentleman to the start of the 2013 National Tour! And.. we're off!

Dimitriy Muravyev from Kazakhstan was the first man to attack in the first national tour.

Muravyev was joined by Bob Jungels of Luxembourg, David Veilleux of Canada, and Jonas Ahlstrand of Sweden to form the day’s breakaway.

At the only KOM sprint of the day Muravyev beat Veilleux over the summit and will wear the Polka-Dot jersey tomorrow.

Meanwhile, in the peloton, the chase is being led by Australia, Norway, Germany, and Great Britain.

At the intermediate sprint it was another two way battle between David Veilleux and Bob Jungels with Veilleux taking the honors.

About 4 minutes later the peloton went through the sprint point with Mark Cavendish taking the fifth place points ahead of in order: Greipel, Goss, Kristoff, and Kittel.

With 25 km to go the gap is down to 1 min 45 sec and Germany’s Tony Martin and Jens Voigt are on the front.

10 km later the gap is down to 1 min 6 sec and Ahlstrand has been dropped from the breakaway.

With 10 km to go the three leaders still have a minute! Can they surprise the peloton?

With 7.5 km to go Tony Martin has single-handily cut gap in half and it looks like the escapees are running out of gas. In the peloton the 40 kmh crosswinds have split the bunch and Guardini, Fuglsang, Schleck, Basso, and Bouhani have been caught out.

With 5 km to go the gap is down to 20 seconds and the bunch can see the escapees in the distance.

With 3.5 km to go Veilleux has decided to push on alone as the rest of the break is swallowed up by the peloton.

1 km later the catch is made and trains are flying and it’s a Germany vs Great Britain battle on the flatlands.

1.5 km to go and Kittel is clearly faster than Ben Swift, and Greipel will have a 100 m head start on Cavendish and another 50 m on the rest of the sprinters.

Under the Flamme Rouge and Greipel is waiting till the last moment to launch and that’s Kristoff in the middle trying to get on Cav’s wheel.

400 m to go and it looks like it’s going to be a German 1-2 as there is a lot of daylight between the Germans and third place Cavendish.

Andre Greipel takes the win in Bastia! Cavendish passes Kittel on the line to finish second who takes third. Matt Goss finishes fourth and Alexander Kristoff takes fifth. The real surprise of the day is Alejandro Valverde takes 9th to pick up some important points for later down the road.

Bad first stage for the French sprinters. The hills tomorrow should suit Voeckler though. |

Luigi: oh
Mvhoogbalem: Well remember that there were cross winds, the game was stupid and didn't give gaps. Farrar lead the second group.
Ollfardh: I assume you are booing about Gilbert, well he technically not the world champion. However there are no national championships for the stage race, just a world xhamionship.
Dippofix: as I've already said, I could choose 21 teams and Ireland sucks after Martin and Roche. Lithuania is going for a zero point race

Martin, Roche, Deignan, Brammier, Bennet, McCann.
All those riders have decent stats in something. they arguably have a better lineup than say Kazahkstan, Sweden or Canada.
