I planning to watch my first American football game ever tonight, how similar are the rules to rugby?

Indeed quite a different. I wished I could watch the game although I prefer Rugby.
But unfortunately I have an exam tomorrow and shouldn`t be awake until 4 a.m.
So enjoy the game, I will watch it tomorrow afternoon. |

thanks, so there are 33 players on a team, with 11 of them only for kick offs?

Well not only for kick-offs. There is always 11 from each team on the field at one time, defense, offense and kick-offs.
So its 11 vs. 11 basically, with the rest of the team on the sideline. Hope this helps.

By the way I have to say Steelers.

There is either a offense squad if you have the ball, defense squad if the opponent has it and kick off squad for a kick.
So 3x11 men squads
They all have their speciality. |

What a game so far! But the Steelers WR's need to step up imo.
And Tom Brady received 50/50 votes to win NFL MVP.

Well its a little obvious to me that the WR's do as its very clear when they run the wrong routes and on a 3 step drop-back Ben slings one to where the WR is supposed to be, but then isnt.
Edit: Oh and the only good part of the half-time show was when Slash showed up.

Matthews won it at defence, and got to say, Rodgers throws like a rockerlauncher! Big Ben chocked at a couple of important plays |
