i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03.png

Last day in Sicily today, with the by far most challenging stage so far. The very long day of racing tackles some serious climbs in the latter part of the day, before finishing down the descent from the last of those. The GC contenders might want to wait for the real mountains, but who knows?

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03_01.jpg

A big group on the move early today, eventually becoming the day's long breakaway. Some very notable names in the group, adding a lot of strength. Luca Paolini, Marco Frapporti and Marcel Kittel to name a few.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03_02.jpg

Back in the peloton, Liquigas, Androni and especially UniCredit started to send up a few domestiques once we approached the first of the three major climbs on the route. We also placed us near the front, to avoid trouble.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03_03.jpg

Up front, Juanma Gárate made sure to unhitch his companions, one by one, when the climbing started for real. Everyone else but Paolini and Frapporti seemed to really hurt due to this brutal pace.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03_04.jpg

Liquigas and UniCredit were doing the same as Gárate to the main field. The still pretty big peloton reduced with every meter.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03_05.jpg

Meanwhile, the front group completely exploded. At the top of the second climb, Gárate's pace was too much for everyone else, so the Spaniard was in for a solo ride. Paolini not very far behind however.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03_06.jpg

Once the road started to turn up again, Paolini disappeared far out of Gárate's sight though. Twenty kilometres from the line, the little climber still held a pretty big lead of over four minutes.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03_07.jpg

The heavily reduced main field reached the final climb a few minutes later, with attacks immediately. Marco Marzano made the first serious move, quickly covered by Mathias Kessler and Vincenzo Nibali.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03_08.jpg

Marzano proved incredibly strong, cracking both Kessler and Nibali after just a few hundred metres. Instead it was Michele Scarponi who bridged across to Marzano, with Damiano Cunego coming back up too. Van den Broeck and Lagutin not far behind either.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03_09.jpg

A bit too many of the favourites made the junction, and the pace dropped. Not for long however, as Franco Pellizotti was next, followed by no one else than the pink jersey of Kanstantsin Sivtsov.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03_10.jpg

To everyone's surprise, Sivtsov wasn't happy just following Pellizotti's move. No, he jumped around the Italian, deciding to try a solo ride instead. Great show from the Belarussian on this climb.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03_11.jpg

All these accelerations closed Gárate's advantage down a lot. He managed to make it over the top solo, but now just a minute ahead of the chasing favourites. Still a good chance to take the stage win however.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03_12.jpg

Sivtsov was caught by a smaller group of favourites at the top of the climb, and the speed dropped again. This was the moment we had been waiting for, and Van den Broeck wasted no time hesitating.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03_13.jpg

He seemed to have caught the others off guard, as a gap of 45 seconds appeared in no time. Up front he also got eye contact with the solo leader, Gárate, whose advantage decreased at a rapid speed now.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03_14.jpg

After either a great descent from Van den Broeck or a terrible one from Gárate, we had two riders at the front just as we reached the final kilometer. Still downhill and still advantage Gárate.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03_15.jpg

No time for cat and mouse games with the other favourites chasing behind, so Van den Broeck launched up alonside Gárate as we entered the final kilometer. Side by side, they approached the finish at a high speed.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03_16.png

It turned out to be both a heartbreaking, and a fantastic finish. Tired from a long time solo up front, Gárate had absolutely nothing to respond with when Van den Broeck came past him. An amazing day for us thus ended in best possible way. But, let's see the gap...

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03_17.jpg

Nibali's amazing descending skill minimized the loss to just under half a minute in the end. But, with the bonus seconds, that's a quite big gain.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03_18.jpg

A total of ten riders in that group. Among all the big favourites was also the day's best domestique, Lagutin, who finished on a great tenth place after doing a lot of work for his captain today. He'll be worth gold later.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03_19.jpg

A minute behind that group, and one and a half behind the day's winner, Egor Silin crossed the line solo. A brilliant performance by the talented young Russian. He almost followed the best on the climb, but lost time in the descent.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_03_20.jpg

And lastly, the day's big losers. Another thirty seconds later, a full two minutes behind Van den Broeck. Most notable ones were Igor Anton, Fredrik Kessiakoff and best young rider, Sergio Henao. That's a hefty loss.

Time for me to comment again, I think:

Not only is this still by far the best reporting of all existing stories (imo), you also somehow manage to set the bar higher and higher, result-wise. I enjoy this story a lot!

Fantastic tactic and excellent victory, just Sivtsov and Nibali in front of VDB now. Great job!

I think we can safely say who is going to win the Giro Pfft Tbh I 'hate' and love your results at the same time Pelii Pfft Keep it up, should be interesting how in the next mountain stage you destroy everyone Smile

pcmdaily.com/images/flags/IT.png Stage 4 - Corigliano Calabro > Grassano pcmdaily.com/images/flags/IT.png

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_04.png

Back on the mainland now, with another tough day in the saddle. Mostly flat in the first part of the stage, but once we hit the closing kilometres, we'll experience some interesting climbs here in Basilicata. The finish will be brutal too, twice up the insanely steep Muro di Grassano. Another GC shuffle ahead.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_04_01.jpg

No Projects in the day's early breakaway today either, but still a few other interesting names. I'm thinking mainly of one of yesterday's big losers, Chris Anker Sörensen. Already far back in GC, he was allowed to go today. Other names included a.o. once again Marcel Kittel and Raffaele Ferrara.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_04_02.jpg

After a rather boring day, the group hit the brutal final climb with just a small advantage left over the chasing peloton. UniCredit did most of the work back in the field, but got some assistance from Liquigas and Sky.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_04_03.jpg

Sörensen realized that it was soon game over for him and his companions, so with a kilometer to the top of the climb, he dropped the other members of the breakaway, trying to go solo over the last fifteen kilometres.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_04_04.jpg

The Dane got nowhere though, since Lagutin led the peloton up the climb at a ferocious pace, with Van den Broeck right behind him. At the top of the climb, it was over also for the last brave escapee.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_04_05.jpg

A quick descent later, we were back on the climb again. Lagutin moved to the front again, giving Van den Broeck a perfect position. On the left side Nibali also moved up to the front, with Scarponi follwoing.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_04_06.jpg

The two Italians pulled out a gap immediately once the sprint kicked off. Van den Broeck didn't have the legs to go with them, thus deciding it would be more clever to follow Sivtsov and Marzano in pursuit.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_04_07.jpg

Sivtsov managed to claw back a little bit of ground on them, desperately trying to defend his jersey from Nibali, who started to slow down after his hard acceleration. Scarponi meanwhile started to move up alongside his fellow countryman.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_04_08.jpg

We eventually found out that not even Sivtsov had the legs to pull the two Italians back. With just three hundred metres to the line, they still held a small advantage over a small group of chasing favourites.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_04_09.png

In the steep last kickup to the line, Scarponi showed strength by jumping over a tired Nibali. These two were clearly at an own level today, possibly showing what we can expect from the mountains later. No reason to be disappointed for today's runner-up though, as he claimed the race lead.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_04_10.jpg

Twenty seconds behind the duo, Sivtsov led Cunego, Marzano, Pozzovivo, Van den Broeck and Pirazzi over the line. UniCredit really showed their true strength here, with three riders in the Top 8. They'll be very strong in the coming mountains.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_04_11.jpg

Just a few seconds behind that group was King of the Mountains leader and yesterday's runner-up, Gárate and Pellizotti, who possibly payed the price for his hard work earlier here. Unneccesary loss for the Italian.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_04_12.jpg

Then we had Poels, Betancur, Carrara, Henao and our super domestique Lagutin, who once again did a terrific job for his captain. He did get a small reward too, moving into the Top 10 overall.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_04_13.jpg

And just like yesterday, Anton had a terrible day, losing another two minutes to his main rivals. He's now almost five minutes behind Nibali in the GC. He must be out of form, otherwise he shouldn't lose this much.

a pitty that you lose 20" on Scarponi and Nibali, but it's not a shame. VdB just isn't their class in steep hils.
Great reporting, as always.

Thanks mate! Smile

Had some spare time, so here's another report!

pcmdaily.com/images/flags/IT.png Stage 5 - Matera > Manfredonia pcmdaily.com/images/flags/IT.png

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_05.png

After the unusually hard opening to this Giro, we hit one of few flat stages today. The short day along the southeastern coast of Italy is probably the easiest day in the whole race. Not saying it neccessarily turns out that way however, as we might experience strong crosswinds along the way.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_05_01.jpg

The new Maglia Rosa, Nibali made sure to show himself to the cameras today, well protected by his team mate, world champion Marco Marcato. Just think of the strength of the UniCredit team in this race. Scary.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_05_02.jpg

A breakaway really struggled to form today, since too many riders seemed interested in catching it. After a long time, a group formed at last however. Van Emden caught it today, making sure to show off our colours. Other names included the likes of Lieuwe Westra and José Ivan Gutierrez.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_05_03.jpg

The group was in full control all day, stretching out their advantage to no more than five minutes at any point during the day. Slightly surprisingly, Liquigas did most of the work in the main field, probably for Elia Viviani.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_05_04.jpg

Once we got closer to the finish, other teams took over the pacemaking. Radioshack and OPQS were the most active ones, and we once again saw the likes of Pellizotti doing lots of heavy work at the front. Stupid tactic.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_05_05.jpg

When the breakaway's advantage dropped under a minute, Van Emden jumped out of the group, giving it a last shot. He did get company, but surprisingly only from one of the others, Davide Bonuccelli.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_05_06.jpg

The two started to work together, hoping that this new move possibly could give them a slim opportunity to battle for the stage win. Their former companions meanwhile got swepped up by the closing peloton.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_05_07.jpg

Passing under the ten-kilometres-to-go-banner, the two couldn't resist the peloton anymore. We did give it one last try though, with Van Emden using his last ounces of energy to hold on just a little longer.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_05_08.jpg

Bonuccelli countered soon afterwards and jumped away himself. We didn't really care, as the OPQS-controlled main field was now more or less on their back wheel. Game over also for the last two escapees now.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_05_09.jpg

OPQS and Radioshack built two trains with just over three kilometres to go, looking to lead their sprinters Francesco Chicchi and Tyler Farrar to the line. We also had a strong one, but Bagdonas and Kluge lost Bozic on the way up to the front, to our frustration.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_05_10.jpg

With Bozic out of contention, we managed to place Kluge in a great position, just behind Chicchi with two and a half kilometres to the line. Farrar also in good position, although he lost his leadout.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_05_11.png

But in a really messy sprint, Mark Renshaw shot out of nowhere to come around both Chicchi and Farrar at the line. Kluge finished nicely in seventh, and Bozic just missed the Top 10 after following some other sprinters.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_06.png

Last pure sprint stage for a while now. The only real obstacle along the day's route will be the Taburno climb, about halfway through. However, it's far out from the finish line, so we should definitely see a mass sprint at the end of the day. Unless a breakaway succeeds in denying the sprinters of course.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_06_01.jpg

We figured that the sprinters' teams would make sure that this rare opportunity for one of few mass sprints ends up in one. Therefore we saw no reason to jump into the day's breakaway, as it would probably not be successful. Gustavo César Veloso and Lloyd Mondory among others, disagreed.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_06_02.jpg

Surprisingly, no battle at all for the mountain points atop Passo del Taburno. Davide Viganò just led his seven companions over the top, focusing on keeping the pace high. Their lead was about six minutes at this point.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_06_03.jpg

In the descent, some teams started to work up the pace. Once again it was OPQS and Radioshack doing the labour, with a little help from Vodafone, who hoped that Mark Renshaw could make it two out of two.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_06_04.jpg

The escapees realized that it was over already with twenty kilometres to the line. After a tenacious pace from the main field over the last hour, the gap was down to a mere minute. As expected, mass sprint again today then.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_06_05.jpg

Viganò made one last jump with just under five k's to go, but he was quickly closed down when Vodafone built a big train at the front, which was only challenged by our own one. All the sprinters locked on to Renshaw's wheel.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_06_06.jpg

Van Emden emptied himself just as the sprint began. Kluge launched early, surprising the Vodafone boys a bit, allowing us a slight advantage over them. Bernardo Riccio placed himself behind Bozic.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_06_07.jpg

The gap became smaller and smaller once our former team mate Marcel Kittel kicked off Renshaw's final leadout to the line. Bozic went for an all or nothing by jumping a bit early, just before the final kilometer.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_06_08.jpg

For a moment, it looked like it could actually work for Bozic, but when the top sprinters, led by Farrar and Renshaw, jumped after the Slovenian inside the final kilometer, they clawed him back quickly.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_06_09.png

And at the line it's Farrar who finally gets his anticipated stage win, seizing an even stronger grip over the points jersey. Chicchi came back with great speed in the end to finish second, with Renshaw in third. Bozic lost speed in the final metres, falling to 8th.
