Group D was called "killer group" because of URU, ITA and ENG.
Now Costa Rica is killing them
That referee is a disgrace. Should be wearing a blue shirt.
I think I know why European teams play so much worse then normal. The pitch quality is really bad, so they cannot anticipate the ball speed and roll as they are used to, which is really important if you want to play fast European style football.
Players who are used to improvise should be favored during this WC.

If that wasn't a joke, I am fairly sure that South Americans are more used to fast and more dynamic games, so it should make them more problems according to your post.
Seems like the pressure & the fact that all teams are now basically on the same quality level thanks to developement of football in all regions, countries and areas in the World, especially the poorest ones (mostly in South America) are making big problems to big teams. I like this alot. We got enough of one (couple) team dominance over all of these years.

To get even better: Italy loose against Uruguay and go out of the World Cup. So only France to go of teams I hate. |

Costa Rica
They were great in the CONCACAF qualifications but I never thought they'd do this well. Great tactics, and its not boring as hell like Greece for an underdog team.

Thank God Delfi chose cycling and not football.
Great stuff by Costa Rica. Group of Death D and of all teams Costa Rica comes through.

I have to admit that I don't watch South American club football but I cannot believe that they play like FC Bayern, Real Madrid, Barcelona or the like. They just don't have the players for that (as their best players are playing in Europe). For example look at Messi, he is used to play in Europe for years now and fails to shine on these WC pitches.
And no, I was not joking about pitch quality. They paint the grass before the game starts.

Well, Messi sorta fails to shine on every World Cup pitch.

Yeah, all european sides have trouble with the pitch, and netherlands score 8 goals in 2 matches. What direction of south america are they from again?
excuses.

Well, bringing up the Netherlands, they play a style that really would suit poor pitch conditions, but I dont buy the excuse either. Look at Germany, look at individual players that have played in europe for years doing well here. I mean, a good portion of players in the world cup play for clubs in europe whether they are in Africa, North America or South America internationally.

I've been watching most matches in shitty web streams, but from what I've seen the pitches have been generally good. There was even that match (can't remember which) in heavy rain, where the pitch held on pretty well.
