"And we’re in some other races as well" Grin
MG: Simba

@Laurens
I'm actually surprised we're this far away from any relegation danger, but will happily take it. With our age structure the only really thing we have to worry about is finding a new cobbles leader in the off-season.

@Abhi
Ranaweera had a good last month and despite the occasional weaker race is doing pretty much what we expected him to. His fare was rather high, but he's on a rather low wage and still has some years in him, so the fare was always a multi-season investment.
There are actually some riders scoring nice in addition to our leaders now. Hodeg is doing really well lately and our youngsters are contributing their share as well. But you're right, some actual depth scorers would be nice. Hopefully our (nearly) maxed youngsters will take some of this work next season too.

June was a really good month in the end as we got some podium results and about 300 points out of it. Let’s hope we can keep on cruising through the season like this.

StartEndRaceteam goalresults
01-Jun03-Jun Scandinavia Open Road Race-GC Top 25; 2nd KoM

We weren’t mentioned or seen in the first two stages which isn’t great in a WC race. But APP stayed long enough with the favourites to finish the race in 23rd place. But the revelation of the race was Juntunen who made it to the break in the final stage twice and was active enough in the KoM sprints to jump to 2nd in this classification – surely something we didn’t expect from him in any race, let alone on PT level.

05-Jun08-Jun Tour of East Java-GC Top 25; Stage Podium

Stage 1 nearly caught us on the wrong foot, but after Ranaweera was on the wrong side of a split for quite some time everyone was in s.t. in the end. Hodeg managed a 12th place in this stage, too. Stage 2 saw Juntunen in the break, snatching some (in the end meaningless) KoM points and Hodeg finishing 16th. Stage 3 was the decisive one for the GC. We weren’t mentioned anywhere, but with Ranaweera and Pinot in 13th and 28th in GC afterwards it was pretty much what we could reasonably hope for. The former lost a position in the final stage on countback while the later gained one, but it was really more about the stage itself. We got Mestric in the break to cover any shenanigans, but in the end it was once again Hodeg who got the result, finishing in 2nd after squeezing himself into position with a daredevil move.

After seeing the startlist we had high hopes for Ranaweera in this race. The initial prologue was as unspectacular for us as the next pan flat stage. Stage 3 saw a first smaller GC fight on an uphill finish and Ranaweera came in 13th with the first big group there. He did the same with a 9th place in the next stage, climbing to 5th in the GC. The fifth stage was one for the sprinters, but then the GC fight really began. Ranaweera was active and strong in the only mountain stage, finishing 3rd right with the favourites, thus getting his first podium for the team and climbing to 4th in the GC before the final ITT, keeping his chances for a GC podium up. And he gained one position in the final stage, getting our first GC podium of the season in the end. Hadi, Pinot, Garibian and Vauquelin added some nice depth scoring, making this race the success we hoped for.

We hoped for a good GC result from Paulus here, but he (and the rest of the team too) lost lots of time in the first stage, so the tactics for the race had to change to breakaway action. Stage 2 saw Belohvosciks in the break once again and Pithie snatching a 10th place in the sprint. Our rider for the next stage was Baudin who took advantage of the C2 rule for stagiaires and showed our colours in the break while climbing to 4th in the KoM competition. And he did even climb to 2nd in this classification after another breakaway appearance in the final stage, ending as our only points scorer in the race.

Louvel was in the break of the day, so we didn’t have to work in the peloton. We wouldn’t have to anyway, but it’s nice to have a better reason than having no contender. Which obviously wasn’t true too as APP did what we hoped for (but didn’t really expect) as he was with the favourites nearly till the end and won the sprint of the second group, resulting in a surprising 10th place.

He doesn’t have his entire support squad here though due to XP management reasons, but at least this gives us the opportunity to send Hadi to his home race.

It’s always one of our season highlights to see the future of our team ride in the Tour de l’Avenir. We once again send a nearly complete squad (including two of our loanees) with the addition of Akers Pedro Silva. Most RDs were spent in the Tour de France, but given our youth squad there (and that we weren’t allowed to score points) it was also our least successful race. And though most of our (co-)leaders were active this month the most noticeable rider of the month was clearly Thibault Pinot who was in 8 breaks and got only our second (classification) win since February, only beaten by Askey by some days.

We actually opened the race in the prologue with Vauquelin, but that’s as much as we can say about our prologue. Lapeira joined the break in the first proper road stage and got some points there. Berhe was on breakaway duty in stage 3. Vauquelin and Delbove were in the break in the next stages. And though nothing came out of this efforts so far we were in every break, so the team did what we hoped for. As a reward our riders took a day off in stage 6. A rested Vauquelin entered the break in the next stage, once again fruitless. Stage 8 was a huge one for the GC, but we also played our small role in it with Louvel in the break and Pinot on the attack later in the stage. Louvel got into the mood and accompanied Berhe for some more TV time in stage 9. Our Ethiopean did the same in the next stage before our team used the TT in stage 11 as a rest day. Then it was French National Holiday and we nearly missed the break of the day, but in the end Pinot made it there and though he wasn’t able to fight for the stage or KoM, he finished 7th in the end and netted us our first top 10 in the race. And while Pinot failed to join the first group of the break in the next (really short) stage, he was part of the first chasing group and added another 7th place from this attack. Stage 14 saw a new name in the break with Delbove, making it 7/8 riders in breaks so far. The next stage was pan-flat so we weren’t disappointed when none of our riders joined the break. There also wasn’t anything in it for us in stage 16. So we sent two riders into the next break with Pinot and Vauquelin, but once again the break wasn’t successful. We tried the same in stage 18 with Pinot and Garibian, but once again to no success. At least we managed to get every single rider in a break this way. In stage 19 Delbove and once again Pinot were our men in the break. The last mountain stage was anonymous for us, as was the cours d`honneur on the Champs Elysées.

In the end we achieved our main goal (apart from getting our youngsters much needed XP) as we were active throughout the race, getting every single of our riders in one break or the other. In total we gathered 19 breakaway appearances, 6 of them by Pinot alone who also got our only actual results with two 7th places.

We came to the Basque country with Oliveira as our captain and he showed this was a good decision already in the first stage where he finished 5th and got some bonus seconds. He added a 6th place in the next (and last) flat stage, getting himself in a good position for the hilly stages. He got another 6th place in stage three. He did a bit worse in the last stage, but as he still finished in the first group he got 8th in the GC in the end.

The opening prologue was never to be a good stage, so our race really began with stage 2. We got Lund Andresen in the break in stage 2, but spoiled all GC hopes by Daniel being dropped in a split and everyone else also losing time. So it was on someone else to salvage this race and Askey did his best by dominating the KoM sprints in stage 3 and taking over the jersey, also defending it in the next stage. The fourth stage was also the first one with real cobbles – and now Daniel was able to show something by finishing 4th in the sprint. The next stage saw Mestric in the break – and more importantly the many available KoM points were distributed so well among the break that Askey kept the jersey in the end. Apart from that it was a rather anonymous stage again. The final stage was pan flat, so getting Belohvosciks and Costiou in the break was a fair attempt that lead to nothing nonetheless. In the end Askey was our man of the race, adding a KoM win in a HC race to his palmares.

Ranaweera finished 12th in the first stage as part of the fourth group, losing some time but staying in the competition for the top 10. Stage 2 saw us chasing the break to make use of Hadis combination of climbing and sprint skill and he indeed won the sprint from the peloton commandingly – too bad there was one escapee still out in front. But 2nd is clearly a good result nonetheless. The next stage saw Pinot active in the break and Ranaweera finishing in 9th with most of the other GC favourites, thus also climbing to 9th in the GC. Our leader climbed even further to 5th in the GC with his fabulous 2nd place in the stage 4 MTT, which also ties our best ever TT result. And stage 5 was the icing on the cake. Pinot was part of the winning break and finished 3rd in the stage. He also got enough points to win the KoM classification. Ranaweera was able to stay with the other favourites and stayed 5th in the GC. In addition we ended 3rd in the team classification. In short: it was another great race for us in Andorra, this is going to be one of our favourite races.

The race began with two flat stages, so it was all about Hodeg there. He finished 6th in stage 1 and 5th in stage 2. The next stage was the first one for the GC riders who had to battle it out in the mountains. Ranaweera did okay in 4th, but he would have needed even more to stay in the fight for the podium. Stage 4 went to the break, so Hodegs 5th place in the sprint of the field was only a 11th place in total. We finished shared 9th in the final TTT and though some GC shuffling Ranaweera stayed in 4th in the end. We had some minor depth scoring as well, making this another good race for us.

In the next stage Delbove was our man in the break and it was a successful one! He finished 7th in the end which is his best career result so far. We missed the break in stage 4 and Hodeg finished even worse than in the previous sprints, leaving us with only the ITT to go. Daniel was attentive the whole race (and apparently had some good support long into the race) and finished 9th in the end which is okay given the hilly finish, though finishing last of his group always sets the question if even more would have been possible. The depth was good too with Oliveira in 17th, Pithie in 25th, Dunne in 28th, Louvel in 35th and Mestric in 38th, although the latter three didn’t get points out of the race. Paulus was our man in the break and finished in one of the first groups in the end alongside Pithie and Le Gac, though 28th to 30th place resulted in our first zero-pointer since the season opener in Down Under.

We had no one in the first break of the race, missing out on some easy KoM points, and also didn’t contest the stage win. At least Oliveira showed our jersey by getting some bonus seconds in the intermediate sprints. That was about all we saw of our team in the first three stages, at least APP was able to stay at around 15th place in the GC. Juntunen was our first rider in a break in stage 4, but he vanished through the stage and that was that. Le Gac’s day in the break was a bit longer as they were only caught in the sprint and he still finished in 15th. But Oliveira did even better in 8th. APP finished the final stage in 15th which also was his final position in the GC. We missed our team goal, but it’s about where he sat in the pecking order, so nothing to complain about here.

September was a short month for us (in terms of races and points), so let’s look at October already as we’re racing a lot then and should have good scoring opportunities in most of the races.

It’s been the final month of the season and it’s been a good one! We got only one podium, but our usual constant scoring was back and we finished the month as 4th best team of the division. We also went up in the rankings for the first time this season, achieving our top 15 sponsor goal this way (though it’s been the only achieved goal of the season).

The initial prologue saw Ranaweera among the better GC riders, so he had a good start into the race. Stage 2 was one for the sprinters and Hadi showed himself there with a 9th place. We weren’t even mentioned in the stage 3 and 4 reports, which also meant Ranaweera didn’t lose any time there. He managed to finish 4th in the GC-defining MTT, resulting in a 5th place in the GC. After another anonymous stage this was also his final result.

Belohvosciks was once again our man in the break and so we didn’t have to work in the chase. In the end Hodeg was well positioned when the sprint began, but when he sat down in around 12th place with 200m to go the race seemed over for us. But somehow he still rocketed in front to finish in a whopping 2nd place in a home race which clearly made us (and the sponsors) very happy.

We didn’t have the highest expectations here, but the race started well with Vauquelin in the break. This was fruitless in the end, but it allowed us to bring APP into a good position for the finale. And he was attentive and able to follow the decisive attack. And though he wasn’t able to sprint in the end he came in 5th. That’s a huge result in this field!

The race began with two stages for the sprinters where Oliveira wasn’t able to compete for the top 10. APP finished with the lead groups in the first two hilly stages, but only got an 8th place as a stage result. He was among the remaining 9 riders fighting for the GC win in the final stage nonetheless. He finished 8th in the final stage too and ended 9th in the GC which isn’t bad but also feels like the lower end of what could have been possible. As a side effect we got a podium in the team classification.

The end of a great season mate, what a result for you Smile
Clearly the best from the 2023 CT class.

Apart from Daniel your squad is great age-wise, so the future looks bright.

Last but not least, thanks for the massive reporting during the season! Grin Not only the quantity, but also the quality. Impressive!

We were once again able to continue our streak of doubling up on our points from last season (even more than that) and we were sure that would be enough to stay in PCT pre-season. It was and that alone makes our season a success. But while we gained our points by scoring in nearly all our races and on all terrains (which clearly gave us something to cheer for whenever we were at the start of a race) we also can’t deny there’s been a shortage of big results, especially of wins. We only got 3 of them, just beating our abysmal debut season low – and we got the last of those wins already in February, so there’s a real possibility we’ll have a whole year without winning a race. We clearly aim to change this next season to add more highlights to the constant flow of points.
Finally here’s an overview of all our podiums (stages, races and classifications) of the season:

It was clear pre-season that our goals were rather ambitious and so it’s no surprise we missed most of them. While Lugano and USA PCC were rather narrowly missed by 2 places each Balkans and Britain were another story. But given the first was our mandatory PTHC goal and the latter the mandatory win goal we weren’t surprised by that, too. At least we achieved our team standings goal. We clearly can’t expect a big boost for our budget from those results, but at least we have more options for our goal races next season if we’re able to re-sign APP and Ranaweera.

i.imgur.com/euKMEbx.jpeg

The season is done and we’ll have a look how each one of our riders did – and what plans we have for them in the nearer and more distant future.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Lewis Askey332072,34

We thought there wouldn’t be much to see from Lewis after his surprising classics win in January. And he really wasn’t seen that often, but once again showed his ability to make the best of his opportunities by adding the KoM win in the Benelux Challenge to his palmares – from a single breakaway appearance. Let’s hope he continues to show this efficiency in the next years too.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Alex Baudin151013

Alex ended his second stint as a stagiaire with 10 points, thus outscoring quite some riders with a lot more RDs and a much higher wage. It probably won’t be enough to secure him a full contract as we don’t see enough potential in him to justify the costs of another three years of development.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Kristians Belohvosciks845n/a10

Kristians only scored 5 points, but he was our most active rider in breaks this season, following in the footsteps of his future teammate and our former loanee Rokas Kmieliauskas.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Welay Hagos Berhe72004

Welay was rather anonymous all season, but he’s still some development to do and we’ll happily give him the opportunity to make his final step next season – or find an African team to take care of him instead.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Alan Boileau74160,320

Alan has finally finished his development and so we expect him to step up in activity and scoring next season.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Clement Chevrier3730,061

Clement wasn’t able to show himself in the way he did last season. Given his incoming first decline our ways will split for good.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Ewen Costiou7720,043

Ewen did what we expected from him: he gained two levels and showed himself occasionally in breaks and more often chasing at the front of the peloton.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Maxime Daniel343860,990

Maxime wasn’t able to keep up with his strong first half of the season. With his high wage and second decline there’s not much hope we’ll find a common ground in the renewals.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Joris Delbove8850,13

Joris has finished his development, so from next season on we expect him to fight for breaks and KoM points more regularly.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Conor Dunne31160,272

Conor is a Swiss-Army-knife, but he suffered from our big squad and the many RDs needed for our talents to gather XP. So he couldn’t be used as often as we would have liked. Add his incoming first decline and FA seems a realistic option for him.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Arman Garibian90250,51

Arman was already a minor depth scorer in his final developing season and we hope he’ll even improve this in the years to come as a valuable stage racing domestique.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Janvier Hadi58500,770

Janvier added some good results in the second half of the season and he would clearly be re-signed if it wasn’t for his first decline. So, much will depend on how renewals go with other riders.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Alvaro Hodeg522132,370

Alvaro really was a steal as he has the best PpK value of the team and finally added some classics results to his good stage results. If his wage demands are reasonable there’s no need not to re-sign him.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Antti-Jussi Juntunen47003

Antti-Jussi showed himself in some breaks although there weren’t any points in it for him. He’s another one of those riders whose future in and after renewals isn’t clear yet.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Paul Lapeira10380,052

Paul was our most active riders in terms of RDs. He couldn’t get much out of it for himself and was even outscored by our stagiaire. But we know his time will come, probably already next season in some C2 cobbles races, so don’t hope to see him in FA any time soon.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Olivier Le Gac55180,283

Olivier was part of APPs support cast most of the season and co-captain in our C2 races. He couldn’t really convince us there and given the need of slimming the squad he’s on the edge of being released – as quite some others are too.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Matis Louvel87591,184

Matis didn’t add some points in the second half of the season, but with his development finally finished he’ll be one of our cobbles lieutenants next season (if we’re able to actually get him a captain) – and maybe even more once he’s eligible for training. And a race like Arenberg could already suit him next season.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Tobias Lund Andresen82001

Tobias wasn’t seen in breaks often, but he worked at the front of the peloton some times – something he won’t be asked for once maxed by his actual team.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Matija Mestric32210,382

Matija was another victim of the few RDs we had left for non-developing domestiques. We plan with him for our future cobbles squad (and as a potential C2 leader) nonetheless – as long as none of the Balkan based teams makes an offer we can’t refuse.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Rui Oliveira481881,710

Rui delivered as our hilly sprinter and occasional hills leader when APP couldn’t take this role. We don’t see why we shouldn’t re-sign him if he doesn’t get gready.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Aurelien Paret-Peintre515211,930

He is just the personification of consistency in the hilly classics and stage races, mostly across all race categories. He missed out on being our best scorer by 3 points, but he’ll lead our hills squad in the next years too – and if we find some money he’ll also finally get the training he deserves.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Daniel Paulus59320,531

Daniel couldn’t really make use of his opportunities as our captain in C2 races, but given his skillset and hopefully still low wage he’ll still be good value for his money as APPs lieutenant.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Thibaut Pinot621001,187

Thibault used his probably last chance at the Tour to show himself in the breaks on the biggest stage one last time. He also added a KoM win in Andorra to show he was still a valuable rider in PCT after two declines.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Laurence Pithie74230,120

Laurence suffered the same fate as most of our cobblers by just missing the scoring opportunities in the second half of the season. But that won’t be a problem in his future and we’re not that happy we’ll be able to follow his development close as he’ll be a PCT rival next season.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Suranga Ranaweera525242,231

Suranga fully met our expectations by being a reliable and consistent scorer in the stage races while still having a rather low wage. He missed the big result, but not by that much, so maybe he’s even a training option if someone throws enough money at us.

rider RDspointsPpkBotDs
Kevin Vauquelin87130,124

Kevin wasn’t a big factor this season, but this will already change next season as he’ll already be a depth scorer and U25 competitor after his penultimate step of development.
