Ryan Eastman - Bontrager 2013 February

The World Tour teams have brought some big names with them to California Wink

Amgen Tour of California

Stage 1 - Santa Rosa (186,3km)
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_1_1-1863.jpg

As all of the flat stages here they don`t really look that flat with some tough hills during the stage. So nothing for pure sprinters as you need to have some climbing skills.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_1_11.jpg

Morton (Chipotle)
Selander (Spidertech)
Gomez Pineda (EPM) for todays break. None of our riders made the jump today although it was planned first. But spontaneously we changed our tactic as the KoM are quite far from the start and not sure to be reached as we expect a fast peloton today. So we want to save the energy for the next 3 stages to have a shot in the breakaway.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_1_13.jpg

Liquigas is here with one of the best stage racer in professional cycling. Vincenco Nibali isn`t riding the Giro d'Italia and so being one of the top favourites here. And today they might work for Dall'Antonia.
A bit surprising also Kenda is working, a small American CT team just like us with the difference that they have a decent sprinter in Milne, who should be their guy for the first 4 stages.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_1_15.jpg

Coming to the first climb I am sitting in the first third of the pack trying to avoid to spend too much energy. Pretty calm day for me so far.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_1_17.jpg

Already the first 2-3 combination changed this. The peloton is stretched now with many riders struggling at the back. So far none of us has problems and we kept our position in the first third.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_1_19.jpg

On the last climb of the day Dale Parker attacked out of the peloton and took the last KoM points. He said he felt good and he will try to go for the KoM jersey in this race and help Dombrowski to reach a high GC, something he won`t go for.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_1_21.jpg

With the last 10km coming soon the sprinter teams have taken over. Mainly Garmin riding for Haussler and Rabobank for Matthews are given chances today. Two great sprinters, who aren`t much afraid of some hilly terrain before the finish.
So the big Garmin team destroys Chipotle`s wish of a stage win as Morton is the last one ahead.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_1_23.jpg

With 4,5km Haussler still has two helpers while Gallopin, Haussler, Milne, Gavazzi, Rodriguez are just behind.
Boasson Hagen, Hushovd or Breschel, who could have expected a good shot here as well are a bit further behind.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_1_25.jpg

Head to head for Matthews and Haussler. Who will win this?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_1_26.jpg

It`s Matthews winning the first stage ahead of Haussler. Great sprint we have seen today. 3rd goes to Antomarchi.

Our team made what we had planned. Not losing any time with our 3 climbers and also Brown and I were able to go over the hills. So a solid day for us without much action.

Well, I haven`t expected anything else. In real Sagan won the first 4 stages if I remember correct with Haussler always following in 2nd.
So it`s not that unrealistic.

But tomorrow should be a bit harder at least.

A steady start in California for Ryan Wink

PCM rulezz
A good day for Ryan, staying out of trouble is the main thing in this kind of races.
Winners never quit, quitters never win.

It's difficult not to be happy when you're surrounded by Belgians. - Mark Cavendish

Nice story - I was thinking about doing one about Dombrowski, but Livestrong wasn't in the pcm-daily DB so I decided against it. I am happy to see a story about them or better about Ryan, as the team is very talented.Wink
Good luck for the next stages

Thanks all.

@ Johannes: I had the Garmin story and always said to myself that my next career will be a small team. So the PPDB was good for this although the Garmin story also wasn`t PCM Daily. Embarassed
Agree with the team, very talented indeed.

Amgen Tour of California

Stage 2 - San Francisco - Santa Cruz County (188,9km)
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_2_1-1889.jpg

Similar stage than yesterday. But the two cat.1 mountains in the end should be harder and so probably less sprinters will be able to sprint for the win again.
We want in todays break and also the two KoM are very interesting.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_2_2a.jpg

Nathan Brown was able to join the breakaway today. He is a solid stage racer talent although he would see his strength as time trialist. Most popular in this group surely BMC`s Burghardt. The German is at least a former Tour de France stage winner!!!

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_2_3.jpg

Rabobank and Garmin are doing the pace. Obviously they believe that their sprinters will pass the mountains today and will duel for the win another time.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_2_5.jpg

Rabobank really going fast now with the first climb in sight and only a 2min gap. With guys like Boom and Breschel working this means a lot for many riders already.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_2_7.jpg

We start the climb and I am next to my team mates. I won`t do much more today. In best case I finish within the first group. Otherwise I don`t really mind and it might even help me in future breakaways.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_2_9.jpg

We haven`t even reached half of the climb and the gap is down to 1'20. Time for the KoM contender to show their ambitions. First is the Italian routinier Stefano Garzelli. He is a former Giro and two time winner of the KoM jersey there. So he surely knows when to attack.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_2_11.jpg

Same thought at my team mate Dale Parker. As one of our climbers he attacks and tries to join Garzelli. As shown yesterday he wants the KoM here and will get lots of freedom.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_2_13.jpg

And 3 more riders with an attack. Rory Sutherland, who always seems to be in top shape for the American races and the Astana duo Maxim Iglinski and Paolo Tiralongo. The names become bigger now.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_2_15.jpg

All 5 attackers were able to reach the front group with less than 2/3 climbed. Unfortunately Brown lost contact just like Zwizanski (Kelly Benefit).

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_2_17.jpg

These two are caught now by Luis Leon Sanchez, who also attacked. But he was not able to bridge the gap and is somewhere in between like 1'30 to both groups.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_2_19.jpg

The fight for the points was mainly Parker vs. Garzelli with Dale having the better end. Great performance by him today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_2_20.jpg

Seeing the danger by the new attackers and a 5min gap with 57km to go it`s now Liquigas and RadioShack increasing the speed. Probably Garmin also don`t want to go too high to give Haussler a chance while Rabobank still has LL Sanchez 40s ahead. So the Spaniard should be back soon.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_2_22.jpg

Just like Brown, who is back in the pack, I have problems going up the 2nd climb. So I find myself at the end of the peloton but I shouldn`t shame myself as I`m going next to riders like Boasson Hagen or Hushovd.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_2_24.jpg

2nd KoM and again Parker winning to secure the KoM jersey tomorrow. What a success for us. Seeing a Bontrager rider on the podium later.
This time it was much more contested with Iglinski and Sutherland sprinting, too, while Tiralongo seems to struggle a bit.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_2_25.jpg

Just a tiny bit to the top and 32km to the finish I lost contact and felt back. Together with well known names such as Boasson Hagen, Pate, Dyachenko, Vanmarcke or Tjallingi.
So I made my job today taking care of Dombrowski and Boswell to come over the top in the first group and can now have a calm descent.

Also Parker lost contact. He spent a lot of energy into the KoM attacks and couldn`t follow on another attack in the small ascent afterwards. So with 18km to go and 1'22 ahead of the peloton he still won`t give up although he already reached his goal for the stage.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_2_29.jpg

But no chance. With 6km to go he is caught while the trio ahead still has 1min advance, which normally is enough. On the other hand it was a tough day for these 3 and Garmin again giving everything behind.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_2_31.jpg

Crash in the peloton and what a nasty one.
Two former breakaway riders in Tiralongo and Burghardt. Luckily both can continue the race.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_2_33.jpg

Wow! The trio really lost 1min on the last 5km and now with 1km to go they are almost caught.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_2_34.jpg

And it`s Rodriguez winning the stage. He was surely the strongest sprinter after these climbs. Garzelli saves a good result as 2nd today ahead of El Fares. Haussler as 5th takes important points in the fight for the sprinter jersey as Matthews wasn`t able to sprint for any points today although he still was in the first group.

With Dombrowski, Boswell, Parker and Mannion we had 4 riders in this group, which was most important of course. And the addition of the KoM jersey for at least tomorrow is a great bonus.

Although it was mainly downhill I lost more than 8min and was able to save a lot of energy I will need on the next stages and with 3 stages definitely not made for me I don`t care if I have a top40 or top70 in the end.
(I really like how groups with non GC riders totally "give up" instead of spending lots of energy for reaching the finish only 1min later. As long as they don`t fall out of the time limit they can even go back until the gruppetto.)

Nice to see the sprinters dropping off, allowing the hilly riders to go for the stage win!

Also, sorry if I've missed it somewhere, but is your goal with Bontrager to become a strong team, or will you continue to be a development squad that is essentially a feeder team to the big ones?

roturn
This is quite a good question I guess. It depends I think. The sponsor will end in 2 or 3 seasons. So that long I should stay in the CT and improve the talents and sign 3-4 more talents (only Northern American and Oceania) every season and might lose some guys as this is what a feeding team is doing, right? Grin

Later I can imagine that when having a new sponsor I could slowly fight for PCT spot.
Also I don`t know if Eastman will always stay with Bontrager and as it is a one-rider story I could also make a team switch when coming to this point.

But actually I have no idea yet although I want to keep it as realistic as possible in signings for the first season now. But I can`t promise that I won`t try to get a decent sprinter for example.

PCM rulezz
Good overall result for Bontrager. I hope you can keep fighting for the KOM jersey

Stage 2 was a day of suffering for Ryan Frown

Ian Butler
Now he's ready for a good breakaway Wink

Haven't posted much, but I must say that this is a great story! Totally different than the Garmin-one, but with great writing style and screens!
Loving it!

Thanks all.

@dienblad: I think I post less KoM and intermediates or sprint preparations in general when it`s not part of Ryan Eastman riding or sometimes for the team than in the Garmin story.

And I am still unsure how to make the mountain stages. Eastman won`t be up there but I might still post Dombrowski then or do you guys think I shouldn`t?

Amgen Tour of California

Stage 3 - San José - Livermore (185,3km)
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_3_1-1853.jpg

Another of these combined flat and hilly stages. The climb is very close the the finish today and could lead to some selections. On the other hand it`s an easier one than yesterday.
After losing time yesterday I am supposed to join the breakway today. Maybe we can even come through in a good group.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_3_2.jpg

The race goes into the neutralized zone and Parker is showing himself in the first row...or better his jersey. Well done, Dale!

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_3_3.jpg

Yes, that`s me. I made it today. Together with Zirbel (Kelly Benefit), McCartney (United Healthcare) and Vergara Caro (EPM) I attacked and were allowed to go.
Definitely not the worst group. The Columbian should be the strongest climber but I don`t really know him that good. McCartney and Zirbel are great to have in a group as they can both go a high pace on the flat.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_3_6.jpg

130km left and a 6min gap. So far so good.
Now Kenda takes over in the peloton. Obviously they go for Shawn Milne again, maybe the best American sprinter here or shall I see the only American sprinter?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_3_8.jpg

Without spending much energy I was able to get the first two KoM sprints. But now at the 2nd Tiralongo attacked out of the peloton for the last 2 points and he didn`t stop. He just continued and is trying to bridge the gap now.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_3_10.jpg

And there he comes. After a 35km solo he joined us. Surely the biggest name now in this group and the strongest climber by far.
Due to his crash yesterday he is almost 5min behind and not the biggest danger. But still with 50km to go the gap is down to 3'30.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_3_12.jpg

Halfway on the final climb I can`t follow Tiralongo and only Zirbel manages it to stay with him. Soon I will be caught. No chance for a good stage result.
(And finally I was able to make a Ryan Eastman face. Quite hard to find good pictures for unknown riders so still not 100% happy, team members follow soon)

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_3_14.jpg

Parker attacks out of the peloton seeing that there is a realistic chance of more KoM points with the breakaway being splitted now.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_3_16.jpg

He already passed the first two riders and now sits behind me, while I take my last energy to bring him further to the duo ahead.
Tiralongo won`t be caught but maybe I can help him being 2nd.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_3_20.jpg

Unfortunately not. Maybe 5m between Zirbel and Parker but 6 points more for him now at least.
Also it looked pretty good for Tiralongo to win this stage as he had a good gap with 10km to go he was caught 4km later. The long solo, the attack yesterday and of course the crash have exhaust him surely.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_3_22.jpg

So the stage was again decided in a sprint, which was perfectly prepared by Garmin and Haussler delivers. Matthews couldn`t come by and also Boasson Hagen is showing himself for the first time ahead of Milne on a great 4th.

For us everything is working well. All 3 climbers, Mannion, Avis and myself in the first group. KoM jersey lead extended. Only the good stage results are missing now.

Ryan had a Great day out in front with the break today, pity it couldn't make it all the way to the finish Wink

Ian Butler
The sponsors will be happy with him at least Wink and hopefully he had some fun riding at the front!

johannes-w
Very nice stage reportWink It's good to see Ryan in the break and Dale in the jersey. Cool idea to make the Ryan-face - I like itWink

roturn
My sponsor is pretty happy at the moment. At least the Livestrong sponsor. Bontrager is so 50%.
Thanks Johannes. It was highly time to do the face but I had to install the graphic tools first again. So it took some time and just now I have made the rest of the team`s faces and made some of them including Eastman a bit darker as he was shining quite a lot.

Your report style is very nice to read.
It was good to see Ryan in the BOTD, I hope you can hold the KOM jersey
Winners never quit, quitters never win.
