Welcome to the 18th edition of the monument Ronde van Vlaanderen. The route has remained the same for a few years now and we haven't had a back-to-back winner since Bewley from 2015 to 2017. Despite the last 20km or so being flat, due to its length and the number of cobbled and non-cobbled bergs, it's rarely finished with a sprint. Edward Theuns won a sprint of only three back in 2021.
Let's look at some of the favourites:
| FL | MO | HI | ST | RS | CB | SP | AC | Pedersen | 77 | 65 | 69 | 78 | 80 | 83 | 78 | 77 | Gerts | 77 | 66 | 78 | 76 | 80 | 82 | 72 | 70 | Per | 79 | 68 | 70 | 74 | 75 | 82 | 74 | 74 | Wisniowski | 79 | 68 | 70 | 74 | 75 | 82 | 72 | 75 | Senechal | 75 | 61 | 67 | 79 | 74 | 82 | 69 | 74 | Altur | 75 | 63 | 70 | 75 | 70 | 82 | 72 | 68 | Van Hooydonck | 73 | 63 | 71 | 75 | 74 | 82 | 61 | 72 | Teunissen | 76 | 61 | 67 | 77 | 73 | 81 | 67 | 69 | Kamyshev | 76 | 56 | 64 | 80 | 74 | 81 | 65 | 59 | Anderberg | 78 | 64 | 69 | 77 | 76 | 80 | 60 | 73 | Theuns | 71 | 66 | 73 | 74 | 71 | 79 | 76 | 74 | Polanc | 72 | 74 | 73 | 78 | 73 | 78 | 67 | 75 |
Without scoring a win, Pedersen has been the best cobbler this season with very consistent results. He went all in at E3 and was close to making it work. On the other hand rounding into form is David Per with back-to-back wins in Franceville and E3. Gerts is also getting stronger with two recent 3rd places. Even post his first decline Wisniowski should be on par with the biggest favourites, but it's actually been Senechal who's had a much better season so far.
The in the past often maligned Altur has been having a decent season and could realistically aim for a top 5 finish. The same with Van Hooydonck to perhaps a slightly lesser degree. Teunissen on the other hand hasn't shown much, but was 6th recently in E3. Kamyshev has been in a super dom role for Senechal, although it would not be a total shock if the two swapped roles. Anderberg has been very consistent and could certainly threaten the top brass. Same with Theuns and his pedigree at the Ronde. And lastly, and it's weird listing him last, is Jan Polanc. All he needs is a good day and he can win it all.
| FL | MO | HI | ST | RS | CB | SP | AC | Spengler | 74 | 58 | 67 | 74 | 73 | 83 | 62 | 70 | Siric | 78 | 63 | 71 | 77 | 80 | 78 | 77 | 71 | Tiller | 74 | 65 | 70 | 76 | 75 | 79 | 74 | 73 | Sulimov | 73 | 64 | 70 | 77 | 71 | 79 | 65 | 71 | Ferreira | 73 | 57 | 68 | 74 | 70 | 79 | 71 | 69 | Gaday | 71 | 67 | 75 | 75 | 72 | 78 | 71 | 73 | Neilands | 77 | 56 | 69 | 74 | 73 | 78 | 71 | 67 | Girmay | 76 | 64 | 71 | 74 | 75 | 77 | 76 | 76 | Bohli | 74 | 63 | 68 | 79 | 75 | 77 | 74 | 68 | Rutsch | 77 | 63 | 68 | 76 | 75 | 77 | 69 | 68 | Ovsyannikov | 74 | 61 | 68 | 75 | 72 | 77 | 79 | 78 | Salzmann | 73 | 63 | 71 | 77 | 76 | 77 | 67 | 71 | Menten | 72 | 64 | 73 | 75 | 76 | 77 | 68 | 68 |
Spengler makes the list on stats, but not on performance. Can he crack the top 10 or does he have to wait for his more favoured monument Paris-Roubaix? Siric has somewhat burst on to the PT cobbled scene and although he already finished 10th here last year, that was a huge surprise. Right now that wouldn't be the case. Tiller is still due a really good result this season. Sulimov has already shown how dangerous he can be with his victory in Appia Antica. Ferreira tends to be solid, but unspectacular while Gaday has had a rough time adjusting to racing in PT.

Not sure why Pidcock isn't here. Pretty huge planning error on my part. Hope Vermeersch can shake of the E3 growing pains of his classics leadership debut to do something decent here!

Goes without saying that we need to continue our run of fortune from Franceville and E3, especially now that monument level points are at stake. Can't afford for Per to have a worse classics season than last year when the rest of our team has disappointed. Gerts should be the favorite for these parcours, and we were only 6th here last year iirc. But it's all right in front of us.
Thank you for the preview!

Cheering a bit extra for Wisniowski here, after his poor start to the season. Although Pedersen must be considered the favourite as in all cobbled classics, though, it feels difficult for him to win one!
An Anderberg top 10 will be solid here, to give us even higher hopes for Roubaix. |

After Eddie's latest results, we're obviously quite hopeful that he can fight for a Top 10 in this race he loves so much. He got his only monument win here, and took 3rd last year as a wildcard rider - we'd happily take the same result again, but after his decline a Top 10 would already be a success. Our result here will decide on wheter it's a great month or a fantastic one - it's pretty much a bonus race for us after all the success we had so far.
Thanks for the preview, good luck to all!

Thank you for the nice preview, redordead!
Ulloa should be able to do better than +- 50th as I said before, but it looks more and more unlikely for him to actually do that in a race, as the same pattern keeps repeating itself. Still hoping for a break and/or that surprise result of course! Good luck to all

This is the ideal opportunity for Tiller to get his first proper classics result for King Power. I'm also hoping for some good depth result again with monument points on the line. Thanks for the preview, redordead! |

That's the win we have been looking for! A surprisingly quiet race from most of the favourites. Thought Polanc had a very promising situation, but the gaps can vanish quickly in a race like RvV. Pedersen was alert when he needed to be and I had to feel confident once we were done with the cobbles. A little less so when he was leading it out from the front, but it was just enough. Cool to get a sprint against Wisniowski for the win, after all he has done for us and the cooperation they have had together previously.
Also pleased to see Tiller delivering at his very best to be a part of the front group.
Decent depth for us as well, with a good amount in the top 30. Thanks for the report, kandesbunzler!

Would have loved to see the long range attack succeed, but also a very nice race result in the end.
Congrats tastasol and thanks KB for the read!

Disappointing to deliver our worst races in monuments so far. 13th really isn't good enough by Theuns in this race. Guess he was on a bad day and Paprstka couldn't really help him (although a Top 30 by the latter is respectable). But yeah, Eddie had his great moments this month, just not in the "right" races
Congrats to Grieg, a great and well deserved win for sure!
Thanks for the report.

He done did it again, another top 10 for Siric!
Good to see him finally win a sprint of a small group. He likely made the correct choice of not trying to follow the big favourites. Fight the battles you can win and a 7th place is a great return, with Poljanec also sneaking into the top 50 for a little depth
Congrats Tastasol, it felt like Pedersen has been building up to this result all month. And thanks to KB for another nice report

Not a bad result, but this marks Gerts' last chance (with max stats) to win the Monument that is on paper tailor made for him. Unfortunately all he has to show is a podium a few years back.

I'm very happy that Tiller made it into the final selection! He stood no chance against his former captains in the sprint, it is a bit unfortunate though that he faded in the fight for 4th in the end. I'll gladly take 6th though. 3 more riders in the top 30 gives us some decent points.
Thanks for the great report, kb!
And cool to see Pedersen get his big win. Congrats, tastasol! |
