Grands Prix Cycliste (2023 )
After last year's event in Montréal the organisers have sent us up the Saint Lawrence River to a circuit around the eponymous Québécois capital of Quebec. It used to be that the riders would visit both locations each year, back when this was a two-day stage race, hence the plural Grands. Speaking of history, there are numerous former winners joining us. Sean DE BIE is not one of them as his new team elected not to attend. Alexey LUTSENKO has returned and will be looking to repeat his last performance; Tomohiro KINOSHITA, who took victory in '16, will be one of his main challengers. By contrast, Wilco KELDERMAN's season so far suggests that he won't be adding to his victory from back in 2015. Miguel Angel LOPEZ (6th in '21 and '22) and Yevgeniy GIDICH (12th in '21) are the other big names in contention; both will be hoping that the race will be run at a heavy pace, but the parcours might not be difficult to produce the splits they will be hoping for.

Turgis is here, I have 0 expectations for him but it would be nice to see a good result in our "home" race. Hoping that MAL wins, thanks for the preview!

you and me both buddy. Wilco has a prime opportunity to pull us into safety here. I'm praying like a madman he does atleast score points. We need every single one from here on out.

That starlist looks quite scary. And Gerts has not been good on hills this year. Recipe for disaster.

Suspect it will come down to a bigger group sprint. Fingers crossed Mohoric can position himself well and fight for a great placing. Think Lutsenko is the biggest favourite here for me, but if it comes down to a sprint, positionings will define who fights for the win and who doesn't. |

Wow, that's a startlist... Errazkin might just be a Top 30 rider in this field - hard to estimate, given that we only have the 11 names in the favourites list. But they're enough to not start dreaming about something big here.
Except for the case that the race is not selective at all, as Theuns could do pretty well in a bunch sprint. But any points basically will do in this field, 20 would be the target.
Seeing a Lopez win would be nice, but as mentioned by ember Lutsenko should be the top dog in a reduced bunch sprint. And another Areruya win would probably surprise no-one.
Thanks for the preview, good luck to all!

Ian Boswell's last ride for McCormick, so hope he performs respectably. His time is clearly past but wouldn't mind a respectable send off.

If Lutsenko delivers we have a good shot at finishing the season top 5. Fingers crossed!

I have really missed losing out to good AI - it's been a while I think! Almost feels nice
Guess we can count MAL vs Areruya as a true rivalry if one of them is willing to end both their races just so he doesn't have to come second to the other
Thanks for a really entertaining report of a very entertaining race liefwarrior, enjoyed it a lot, even after I realised Areruya wasn't going to be mentioned again Hope to see more of your work if you have the time, but thanks for any reports you do! Congrats to Marco and the Minions, I never mind seeing a Kinoshita win.
Spoiler I liked the individual touch of the capitalised surnames, but just seeing "MAL" did make me smile
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

What a race that was! Very nice to see Suter try to make the most of his great abilities on the flats. Thought he looked really good for a while too, but it was clearly a bit too early.
Thought MAL was long gone with that solid gap as well, but apparently he also blew up as we approached the final. Mohoric did great things in the run-in, but it was super complicated with attacks flying all over the road. Felt like all kind of results was in play, and running away with 2nd place is fantastic.
Congratulations to Marco on a superb win by Kinoshita! He used his power perfectly, and was clearly able to save the needed energy for the final push to the line. Also feel sorry for knockout. MAL went all in for the win, with a big risk, and then everything went wrong timing wise, as it seemed he was caught in the worst possible moment, with the race being full gas from then and all the way to the line, never giving him room to recover.
Thank you for a very entertaining report, liefwarrior! Only minor thing it would be great if you have in mind next time, at least my thought, is that it would be great to have a little information once in a while on how many kilometers there are left. Having said that, I really enjoyed how you did it, and also the big surname letters were cool |

Not a bad one from Gerts after all. And a nice cameo from Dima in the breakaway and then actually hang on to a decent spot. Gerts was so good that he actually beat MAL
Congrats, Marco!

It was always going to be too optimistic to think Wilco would win here.
BUT. With this field, 12th is a great result. It simply means we score again! We are ever so inching closer to Zwift and the tension is killing me. Colombini may be down but we are never out! Lets hope Afewerki can add some more points down in Euskal. Nonetheless we still have some big races left for Wilco. Japan up next, and after that the big finale in Emilia which he has to win for us to comfortably end this season in a safe position!
Congrats to the ever present Minions and thanks for the great report!

Well, it was a great race - too bad we were just a side note, and only mentioned when our riders were dropped
Especially a truly disappointing performance from Errazkin, who could've made the Top 20 on a good day. Theuns did what he could, and it actually was a great race by him looking at his stats. The race was ridden much harder than I expected, so a Top 30 is still a good performance by him!
But what a show up front - big congrats to Kinoshita for winning it all! MAL attacking, Areruya overextending himself in trying to bring him back - and both not competing for the top spots in the end. Had his attack worked out, it would've been one of the greatest performances of the year by MAL, now I guess it definitely seals the title for Aker.
And for Xero, definitely not a good race, scoring relatively small points in one of Areruya's three races this month. On the other hand, Fastned with a surpsiringly strong Vansevenant (which makes me feel even worse about Errazkin's no-show), which could be extremely important in the promotion fight as well.
Thanks for the report.

My team is defenetly joking. INstead of doing good result at C1 or HC... races they collect nice result at the races where we don't get any points. That's the second PT or PTHC race in a row.
Ok at least Calmejane is consistent with collecting the points across the season.
Thanks for report and congrats to winner.
