[PTHC] Tour of Lithuania
Welcome to Lithuania
The race begins with a medium sprint stage, though the smaller bumps might be too much for some of the fast men or even enable some late attacks. The shorter second stage sees no such dangers. Stage 3 will see the first gaps with a short TTT, but the decision will come with the final stage that mainly consists of 200 km up and down on short hills.
The race has been on the MGUCI calendar ever since 2013, but it underwent some changes through the years, most importantly a shift from China to Lithuania in 2020. It was mostly dominated by puncheurs (especially by Tomohiro Kinoshita who has won the GC three times over a period of 5 years), but last year Caleb Ewan managed to beat all the puncheurs and win. Both of them are at the start to add another win to their palmarès with Alexey Lutsenko being the third former winner on the startlist.

With someone like Mohoric in your team (and no sprinters to split the support) you should automatically be among the GC favourites, but given the TTT setup of his team a really high GC finish seems unlikely. But a Top 10 and a top result in the final stage is still realistic.

The PCT outfit has some good options for every stage: Silvestre should be a contender for Top 10 results in the sprints, the TTT setup is among the better ones and Izagirre is amongst the better puncheurs. This seems like a recipe for some decent results in stages and GC, though probably no really big results.

Afewerki is a Top 10 contender for the sprints, Vliegen and Raileanu could get a minor result in stage 4, but the TTT won’t be any good for the PCT outfit. Maybe a minor GC result could be possible.

Van der Lijke is one of the best sprinters in the race and decent in the hills. The TTT setup is stellar and should give him a decent chance in the GC – and then there’s Wirtgen as well who might not be a big puncheur, but maybe he can still hang on in stage 4 long enough to snatch a good GC result.

The Greeks have a strong sprinter with Farantakis and a good puncheur with Koretzky (at least on paper, SotD might tell you otherwise after the season so far). Combine this with a good TTT setup and they could end up with a nice ToL overall (though SotD might tell you otherwise after the season so far, again).

The Latvians send some decent riders, but not more. No Sprinter means it will all come down to the TTT (with an only decent outlook) and the final stage. Foss or Kanepejs could at least get a minor GC result.

Fastned has a horrible TTT setup, so any major GC result is out of reach. They will hope of some decent sprint results for Vingerling and something from Vansevenant in the final stage. The young Belgian could also score some U25 points.

The Swiss outfit is infamous for its TT focus and indeed brings one of the best TTT setups. Add a good sprinter with Bol who has already done well this season (including two stage wins in the Giro) and a decent puncheur with Errazkin and everything set up for a good ToL. But given Errazkins track record this season a good GC result isn’t set in stone.

| ★★☆☆☆ | Lampre - Pinarello | PCT |
No puncheurs, one of the weakest TTT setups: There’s not much left apart from the sprints for Lampre. And they bring a nice combination of Coutinho and Dzamastagic to compete in the sprints. They may not be the best sprinters in the field, but some good results should be within reach.

The Minions bring Kinoshita for the GC and a good TTT setup as well as some good domestiques for his support. Hopefully Kalaba competing for the sprints won’t distract the others from chasing the GC win.

Part 2
| ★★★☆☆ | Moser - Sygic | PT |
Everything is set up for Gaviria to win the first to stages (and the points classification). He has a great leadout in Cerny, Gross and Bogdanovics and no real GC contenders in his team. Given the weak TTT lineup they don’t have much more to hope for though.

| ★★★☆☆ | Rabobank | PT |
Rabobank has a similar approach to Moser, though (on paper) Grosu as well as his leadout are a tad weaker than Gaviria. So everything’s set up for a big fight in the sprint stages.

| ★★☆☆☆ | Sony - Force India | PCT |
Sony sends another sprinter squad, though overall the combination of Vesely and his leadout seem a level below the top guns. Neither the TTT lineup nor the puncheurs are impressive, so not much to hope for in this direction.

| ★☆☆☆☆ | Team UBS - Tissot | PCT |
The Swiss have no sprinter and no real puncheur. Their TTT setup is good, but not great, so their results will mainly consist of a decent TTT and not much more.

| ★★★☆☆ | Tinkoff - La Datcha Team | PT |
Samolenkov is among the better sprinter in the race, Strakhov and Trakhov could get a good final stage, but regarding the GC everything comes down to the TTT. And their lineup for that is – interesting. Four TTs with 78+ and four riders with a TT beyond 70 (including the only two puncheurs) are pretty risky.

| ★☆☆☆☆ | Trans Looney Tunes | PCT |
The Slovenians send one of the weakest lineups with one of the weaker TTT lineups, no sprinter and rather mediocre puncheurs – were it not for the infamously overperforming Lilian Calmejane. The last stage could be his chance for another surprise.

Xero has no real puncheur, a rather mediocre TTT setup and Houle is not among the top sprinters in the field – so a big result would be surprising though at least Houle could profit if the final stage isn’t ridden hard enough by the puncheurs.

Thank you for a massive preview, kandesbunzler!
As you rightly write, we can't have any big GC expectations here, we're no doubt here to hunt stage results. Hopefully Mohoric can make it work on the final day, as I'm not convinced by Zhao's or our rouleur's chances on the flat rated stages.
Curious to see how this one plays out. Definitely have EA Vesuvio and Wirtgen as huge favourites for the overall. What a TTT lineup that is. Gidich and King Power must be the obvious challenger, but he will need something very special, I think, assuming Wirtgen and EA claim the TTT stage. |

No GC hopes here. The few time - trialists that our team has were sent to support Formolo in La Vuelta. But Grosu should be at the front in the first two stages.

Hoping for a good stage result here with Coutinho hopefully benefitting from being one of the weaker sprinter and getting into the mix that way. Thanks a great preview!

I'm disappointed to be honest. I thought it was an original message but it's just a part of yours

Thanks for the preview. We're betting on three horses here with Kinoshita and Cattaneo for the GC and Kalaba for the sprints, combined with a strong TTT outfit, so no room for filler. Big result needed

Thanks for great report. Sadly, without Eastman, we just have to hope to get lucky.
Even the TTT looks too competitive for us. Maybe Kennett can sneak some points

Interesting field. I only see 4-5 teams who are definitively stronger than us in the TTT, but then also 4-5 who could be stronger or weaker depending on how the stage plays out. And then not all of these teams have strong riders for the final stage, but Uwizeyimana and Izagirre also aren't super reliable. I think a GC Top 10 is in the cards, but I also wouldn't be shocked if we got no one in the Top 25 at the end of it.
Wirtgen and Gidich look like the favorites for me here, but there are a few others who could challenge them, too (Kinoshita, Mohoric on a great day if the TTT doesn't produce big time gaps, maybe Errazkin or even Bazhkou if Jura or Aker excell in the TTT and the final stage isn't selective). Really curious to see how the sprint trains will work out for Ewan and Gaviria, too. Should be exciting to follow, thanks for the preview!

Would've loved to take this band and send a TTT-backed Herklotz here, but some other race ended up taking priority.
I don't see the TTT being decisive beyond sorting riders within their small-ish groups on stage 4 for the GC.

Well, this is one of the races I really looked forward to pre-season. Having one of the best TTT outfits - I guess podium contenders behind the obvious favourites EA and Grieg - I was hoping for either (or both) of Bol and Errazkin being able to get a good GC result. Errazkin was in the first group last year already, and Bol is not weaker on the hills than sprinters like Enger or Riabushenko who also made that group.
But: Given how TTTs have played out so far this year, we're very likely to lose both of them on stage 3. I'd have sent a different team (including Masnada) had I known that, but well... So I think my best guess for the GC might be Küng - or maybe Darbellay, if climbing matters more than hill stat.
Bol should be roughly in the same position in the sprinter pecking order as in the Giro - so from not participating to winning the first two stages, anything is in the cards.
In short: A race I was hoping to get a good points reward from, but given how bad this kind of race has been for us so far, it's unfortunately pretty likely to be yet another PTHC disappointment.
Agree with cunego, Wirtgen and Gidich are looking good. Aker should lose too much time for Mohoric to fight for the win, Kinoshita is the weakest Minion on the TT bike and is likely to get dropped. This will almost definitely be the case for Koretzky as well, and might happen to Lutsenko, too. While the TTT shouldn't produce big gaps between the teams, weak TTers have often lost a bunch of time nonetheless. We'll see...
Thanks for the preview, and good luck to all!

There was no race in the planner where i changed my leaders more often than this one. Foss, Foss and Lopez, Blums or none, i just couldnt decide on a nice setup. In the end i sent only Foss and the best ttt i have to offer. Not the highest expectations but you never know.
Thanks for the preview!

Very nice preview and spot on with "good chances for nice results - or the chance of no results at all."

Wow, did this race step up a level? Feels like a much stronger field this year. As a stage designer I have to say I like the variety of approaches and possible outcomes, as a team manager I am not pleased that it has have attracted the likes of Gidich, Wirtgen and Cattaneo.
I agree with Fab that how the AI handles the TTT in dropping riders will be important. Last year Ewan won because of time bonuses in the first two stages so wonder if he or Bol will be a threat again, if they survive the TTT.
Minor points likely for McCormick if Narvaez and/or Bagioli can hang on in the TTT and the last stage.
This is a race I think we should consider applying the sprint race bonuses as with TDU.
Thanks for the great preview.

Expectations are low from this race. Hoping for a couple of Vesely surprises and a crazy Stage 4.
Thanks for the preview kb

It’s a very interesting profile. Could go either way with the new version. Last season this was one of our best races. Will be interesting to see if it goes like that, or the opposite way.
I Can probably tell you all about that, according to the preview ;-)

Seemed like a somewhat difficult sprint there. Farantakis looked to be in a strong position in the two last pictures before the finish, so it’s sad to see him pick up 8th. I was thinking a podium seemed very realistic. Nothing compared to the usual AI blunder, that tows Gavirias race out the window.

Congrats Abhi! Wouldn't have brought Vesely to this race myself but he proves me wrong
Kalaba did well, but the sprint was very close.
