Deutschland Tour

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Profiles/mg_deutschland.jpg

Welcome to the 16th edition of the Deutschland Tour. Over the last few years this has become a stage race for time-trial specialists. There is a 26.5 km flat TT on stage 3 that decides the race. Either side of that are two sprint stages. So apart from the time-trial specialists we have some of the best sprinters here.

With that said let's look at some of the favourites:

We have a rematch of last year with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Würtz going for his 3rd victory, his main competitor again is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Zmorka. Only the Dane has improved from last year making him a clearer favourite this time. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Vlatos was 3rd last year. but he'll have a hard time repeating that result with likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Mullen in the fray. Then we have eight more riders with 80 TT that will hope to break into the top 5. But even after that there are so many capable riders still left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Sterbini is at the end of this list and he finished 4th last year.

The sprinting field offers similar depth of quality. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Coquard stands out, but he hasn't got a proper lead out. Relying on Koumpetsos might be a problem. The same can be said for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Halvorsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Vesely aren't taking that chance, both have well suited lead outs. We'll see how the rest are handled, but as with the time-trialists there will be some disappointed riders with so many options available.

It's very interesting to see Coquard this clear standout sprinter in a GC race with 4 flat stages. I certainly didn't expect that - and in hindsight I guess Farantakis should have been here to lead him out rather than participating in eg. Slovenia and Lithuania.

I can only hope that Kortsidakis, Kelly and Koumpetsos can do enough for him, but I can be a bit worried that Manninen will have the upper hand in the train build proces. Let's hope most teams are looking towards that TT and haven't built their teams perfect to interrupt Coquard. On paper he should get something like 2-3 stagewins from this race, but he rarely performs like that.

It's about the last chance for Vlatos to get a good season aswell, so while 3rd is optimistic, somewhere around 5-7th should be realistic. There's always a risk that stage 2 and 5 can cause enough chaos for someone like Vlatos to lose out, but I hope the combined roles of him leading the team in GC, and having to work for Coquard will keep him close enough to the front to avoid being lost in the proces.

Ioannidis and Kiriakidis atleast should be strong enough to keep afloat regardless of the difficulty thrown their way. With 76/77 TT respectively they will not pose a top 20 threat to the GC though unless some crazy split occurs. If they can feat around 20-30th it would be decent depth points, and especially Ioannidis needs to pay back for the huge amount of training money thrown into him.

Interesting race, nontheless!

Had a massive (depth) result here last year, which ended in promotion. I fear even a superb result now won't be enough to save us from relegating, but hoping for at least one stage win from Manninen should be realistic. Thanks for the preview, red!

Likely to be a tough race for us but I can only hope!

Cosnefroy and Thomas would need superb performances to creep into the Top 10 but gotta be hopeful! Maybe a split on a sprint stage where Thomas benefits Wink

Jakobsen also in a strong sprinting field but he’s got one of the best lead-out men in Hofstetter so we’ll see if they can work together effectively!

Thanks for the preview and looking forward to seeing how we go Grin

Fingers crossed Zabel can repeat his recent great form in a home race for Kraftwerk, but not expecting it.

Ludvigsson might be able to get some minor GC points for us.

Hoping for some good performances by Silvestre in the sprints. Best case would be something like a stage win and maybe Top 3 in the points classification, but in this field, we could well end up with much less. We've got nothing for the TT, so Fabio is our only shot at points.

Thanks for the preview and glhf everyone!

No GC expectations for Dennis as the field is simply too strong. Hope Vesely is not caught out by a bug or his lazy self.

Way too many time trialists in a pure PTHC race for us to have a shot, so we're all in on AKA in the sprints. He could really use a standout result at this point in the season, because it has not been good at all up until this point.

We don't really have large ambitions for this race. Howson and Razumov aren't competitive enough in this field and our young sprinters wouldn't even be good leadouts for the real sprinters. Some breakaway TV time would be good enough and maybe a top15-20 would be our goals.

Not sure if the sprinters stand a chance but it could be a nice battle between the likes o Wirtgen, Wurz and Coquard, Manninen. Good luck!

We are here to try to get depth points in the GC. Depending on daily form, Lammertink could be a candidate for a top 10.

And of course I’m looking forward to seeing Dainese again after his fairytale Tour. It would be great if he can challenge for a stage podium, but the sprinter depth behind Coquard and Manninen is strong.

tastasol
Another potentially big race for Würtz. He's been great here before and hopefully he can do it again. Would ideally liked to have the TT a bit longer, but fingers crossed for a good race!

Hopefully Mano and/or Leung will be blessed with good fortune when the dices will be thrown in stage 3.

I hope Manninen not sprinting is not a sign of the following three sprint stages..

Thank you for having this race rolling, redordead!

Weird to see the complete lack of leadout towards the sprint there. Thus, it became a true lottery, and getting 6th is fine by Dainese. Congratulations to Marco on the surprise win! ELCO and LPH surely must hope the leadout riders get it right already on the next stage, if not, we could be in for more randomness.

Couldn't have asked for much more, I guess. A little, but not much Pfft We come away with third on the stage, in the GC, in the points and in the KoM classifications as well as second in the U25. Good start for sure, ideally we can even improve on that tomorrow, before all GC/U25 ranks plummit in the TT.

Decent enough first stage with Suter collecting the KOM jersey and Antonijevic ending the day in 4th overall. Hopefully the bad positioning from Cullaigh was a result of no lead outs forming rather than anything else and he can make up for lost time in the later stages.

Certainly a slightly strange sprint but we benefit with Jakobsen taking a very decent 4th Smile No time lost for the others so job done there for the GC hopefuls.
