MG History: Comparisons across seasons

Inspired by the post by SotD in the PT rankings thread, I've taken some time to look at comparing the results of teams across seasons. With different division sizes, points scales and RD allocations it's tricky to do this directly, so I came up with a proxy method.
From the rankings for each season (and for each division) I calculated the mean and standard deviation (SD). A quick check showed that MG rankings fit reasonably well against a normal distribution, so for comparing across years I calculated how many SDs from the mean each team's score was.
As a general rule, around 99.7% of scores will be within three standard deviations of the mean, around 95% within two, and around 68% within one. This gives an idea of how strong a performance is when looking at the 'rankings' below.
Future development of this might look at the performance of managers (tallying up performance over seasons and taking an average) and of individual riders. I also considered displaying the 'rankings' as percentiles, but I figured seeing the number of SDs would be less confusing at this point. If anyone has anything else they'd like to see then let me know and I'll see what I can do.
Tables are in the posts below - I've highlighted the top 10 teams and the bottom 10 teams, with the rest in a spoiler. Note that where teams completed less than half the season they've been removed from the calculations to avoid skewing them. I've also included the 2012 CDiv2 season within the CT figures. |

Satisfied to not make it on any of these lists. Really close to breaking into the top 10 CT seasons from our 2020, but just fell short. We were pretty terrible in 2014 too, but apparently other teams have been much worse.
Hurts to see how we got progressively worse over our first PCT stint though.

Thanks, great to look at. 2015 and 2016 were the haydays for Strava, would have been even cooler if we had won the ct in our debut season. 2017 was a tough season and narrowly relegated I think, nowadays Strava 2.0 is happy when we score some points occassionall.

Awesome stats jph, love it!
Surprising a little to see our CT promotion year in 6th was better than last year's 5th in the larger PCT, but shows the huge quality that 2017 CT season had in the top 7-8 teams how many of us are up there in the rankings.
Also proud that for all the talk (mostly from me not calling anyone out here really ) about how bad we were looking (and the fact we didn't even attempt to add a leader in transfers), we were the best "last-placed" PT team since 2009 and not in danger of joining the bottom 10 overall.

If managers want to see only their team's results for each season, happy to take requests and I'll share as a batch - quite easy for me to do using the spreadsheet. A few headlines on 2022-2024 for each division:
The two most recent years in PT may have been the most competitive yet, with Aker's 2023 season (24th best all-time) and Gazelle's 2024 season (34th) being the two lowest ranked title winning seasons yet. At the other end of the scale, Zwift's 2022 season was the worst ranked of any team that completed a full season, with Assa Abloy (2024), Binance (2023) and Lidl (2024) also entering the bottom 10.
Amaysim's 2022 and Los Pollos Hermanos' 2023 see both teams enter the top 10 all time, in 4th and 6th respectively. Unlike PT, there haven't been many poorly ranked seasons from 2022 on, with only Spark BNZ's 2023 entering the bottom 10, though Project: Africa's 2022 would have also been there at the time.
While Gazelle's 2013 remains unmatched, Jura's 2022 and Newton Foundation's 2024 enter the ranking in 3rd and 4th, with both also in the top 10 of all seasons across all divisions (6th and 8th respectively). At the bottom of the ranking, Eddie Stobart's 2022 comes in 4th from last, while Air New Zealand (2023), Adidas (2023) and Podium Ambition (2022) also enter the bottom 10. |

Surprised our 2019 season is worse than our 2015 season, the 2019 one we had better riders and it felt more competitive than the 2015 one did.

Still some great memories around of our 2022 CT season, even though I'd obviously prefer it didn't even happen (we were relegated by a handful points the year before). It really was a great season, in particular in the second half (with McCormick being very strong competitors at the start of the yaer), but it looks like it's still a level lower than Azteca's 2019 season, which was my first (and worst, even though the SD value says it was the 2021 PCT season, which my gut feeling doesn't agree with at all). Wasn't even there as a silent observer in 2016, so no clue how dominant Gazelle were back then.
A bit surprised that our 2023 PCT season is ranked so far down (31st if I'm not wrong), given that we scored almost as many points as ELCO this year (#17) and definitely more than ISA (#28). But I admit I don't have a degree in statistics and am struggling a bit to fully understand the results 
Good to see that our first PT season was almost the perfect average season (-0.05), a decent base to build up upon 
Thanks a lot for doing this - I love numbers, even if sometimes I can't fully understand them

I think Podium Ambition is the only team to have both a Top10 Best and Top10 Worst season ranking in the same division?!
And staggered our truly disastourous PT season and several complete washout PCT years (where we didn't even use the full cap space deliberately!) do not rank amongst the worst.
Guys.... i might actually be a good manager... scary!
