Scandinavia Open Road Race - Preview
Teams from the Pro Tour and the Pro Continental Tour meet in Sweden for a short 3 day stage race which should be very well contested.
The first day is the easiest of the lot but it is likely to have an impact on the GC. It's unlikely that anyone will win the GC off a strong performance on this stage but a poor performance could be detrimental to the chances of a few.
The 2nd and 3rd stages are then in the Hills where we hope for some aggressive and adventurous racing from some of the best Puncheurs in the Professional Peloton.
Assuming that the opening prologue has an impact, there are 3 riders we will highlight for starters. The first is Jack Bobridge who is one of the top Puncheurs but is also very strong against the clock.
Last year's winner, Lopez is here again as well and will be looking to repeat last year's success. He's one of the best Puncheurs in the World and he's no slouch on the TT bike either.
Gidich may not actually end up being the leader for his team but he's another one to watch given his relative strength riding on his own as well.
The final 5 riders we will highlight are some of the best Puncheurs in the World but they're not quite as strong against the clock as those previously mentioned. They will be looking to make that time back in the hills through sprint wins and attacks. De Bie had a good time of it in the Ardennes but will need to show it 2 days in a row here.
Lutsenko is one of the fastest finishers so he may bide his time to go for the reduced sprints at the end of Day 2 and 3 here.
Mohoric is a world class young rider looking to build his reputation and he has a great opportunity to do that here.
Sagan is one of the old guard but he's still a very capable and wily old customer.
Skujins is the worst TT rider out of everyone here but he's a great puncheur so expect some more aggressive riding from the Latvian.
Finally, we have Ponzi who isn't young anymore and may be past his best but he's a smart rider who will ride to his strengths so the younger ones will need to keep an eye on him.

There are a number of strong Prologue riders here but our focus here is on the best 4. Dennis is the only one of the 4 who will realistically be hoping for a strong GC result as he has good ability to go over a hill as well.
Paillot may be hoping for some points in the GC too but his focus will be on the opener and the chance to wear the leaders jersey.
Schomber and Gonzalez Salas won't be thinking about the GC at all but their teams will be hoping they can get themselves a stage win and a day leading the GC.

Back to racing after a long break, unfortunately with a race that we have virtually zero chances in If this was a C2 race, it would be perfect for Rosskopf, but I'd be shocked if he did anything with this competition. My hope is that we're in the breakaways, maybe fight for the KoM. Thanks for the preview LLS!

Wanted to bring Phinney forgot Liechtenstein in my planning and then had two race days too much for him. Decided to scrap this in favour of Lutsenko due to him being the best possible replacement as he came 2nd (?) last year. Thus expecting a podium and hoping for a Stage win.

One of the races im really looking forward to. Lopez won this last year and must be considered a top favourite once again.

God knows what happens here. Can Eddie actually turn up and out in a good result for once? Hopefully

I'm guessing Bobridge or maybe Dennis wins this one. Spilak could maybe use his mountain stat somewhere, although I fear the climbs on the two road races aren't long/hard enough. Top-10 should be nice, but easier said than done.
Thanks for the preview, LLS. Looking forward to the reports!

Well that's a shocker Good on Rosskopf for finally overperforming after quite a few underperformances. If he's treated as a GC contender now and those short uphill finishes don't produce many gaps, he might actually hold on to a decent GC position.
Tenorio with a monster performance, congrats jaxika!

I think I can be content with Spilak's performance. Now I'd need some of the riders above him to get dropped somewhere, or else this would be a poor pprd in the end. Also my own fault I guess, could've sent a time trialist here in case they 'survive'.
Thanks for the report, LLS, and congratulations to jaxika

Completely missed that Tenorio races here, obviously made him the top favourite for the prologue. The size of the gap is crazy.
2nd on the day for Lopez is very strong and a great position for the next days. Lets go!

I think I'm pretty happy I didn't pick this band given the competition

That was a strong start for De Bie.
Hopefully he can continue this on the more suited stages 2&3. A high GC close to the win is absolutely needed from him. Ideally with strong stage results as well as scoring was tiny lately. |

Was a bit afraid to see such "big" group including weaker puncheurs in the group close to the finish.
Had not expected the final climb to lead to such big gaps.
A pity that De Bie was not ideally placed and seems to have missed the acceleration once Sagan was caught. Still moving up to 2nd is a good result sitting in 3rd GC now.
Hope is there, that he can climb another spot, while MAL is probably too strong. |

I was a bit worried when lopez was isolated early but he played it perfectly. Super excited about the result, noteworthy that we could end up with a few gc positions in the 20s with our depth if they can defend their positions. But crucial will be that lopez can defend his lead

Some nice positions gained by Spilak, from 16th to eleventh. Getting inside the top-10 on the final day won't be easy, but would be great, definitely with this competition. Congratulations to knockout and thanks for another report LLS!
