We're back in Russia for the ninth running of GP Moscow, which has been on the MG calendar continuously since the 2012 season. Recently, Evonik has kind of made this race race their own, with consecutive victories from 2016 to 2018. Their streak was broken by Coquard and Festina last season as a rare traditional bunch sprint decided the result. Both teams are back again, and we'll take a look at how the startlist looks like for them and the others in the next section.
The race itself remains the same, 198+ kilometers of flat roads with numerous undulations which are perfect for breaking up the rhythm of the pack and for the brave souls to launch speculative/devastating attack.
| FLA | HIL | RES | SPR | ACC | Van Stayen | 76 | 79 | 71 | 84 | 78 | Degenkolb | 76 | 69 | 71 | 84 | 81 | Coquard | 73 | 66 | 74 | 84 | 83 | Bewley | 77 | 70 | 75 | 82 | 82 | Ahlstrand | 74 | 67 | 73 | 83 | 82 | Ewan | 75 | 71 | 71 | 83 | 81 | Grosu | 73 | 73 | 70 | 83 | 80 | Kennaugh | 77 | 65 | 71 | 82 | 81 | Swift | 73 | 67 | 69 | 83 | 81 | Howard | 76 | 68 | 70 | 82 | 79 | Demare | 73 | 80 | 72 | 82 | 81 | Van der Lijke | 73 | 76 | 71 | 82 | 79 | Groenewegen | 73 | 67 | 71 | 82 | 81 |
2019 winner and Evonik's leader to try and get back to winning ways in this race is Van Stayen, who has the perfect combination of sprinting and support stats to take a great result from this race. He has a great squad in support, with Eislers, Dzamastagic, Blythe, Stoltz and more all well equipped to handle a race like this.
Built in a similar vein to Van Stayen, with the exception of puncher capabilities, Degenkolb is the next rider on the favourites list. He has had a fantastic season so far and will be looking to continue the same in this race. Petit, Santos and Kreder are an excellent support team for this kind of a race.
Defending champion Coquard is back and looking to go back to back in this race. The team around him isn't the best but Coquard himself is capable enough to get the job done.
2015 winner Bewley is back on the startlist again. While his powers of excellence might have reduced somewhat, he is still strong enough to to make an impact in a race like this. His abilities to lay down or follow a fast pace on the flat roads is almost worse than none, and that is an ability which should be of help here. He has a decent support team which should help him get into a good position at the end.
Following these four is the quartet of Ahlstrand, Ewan, Grosu and Swift, the latter representing wildcard team Berg. All of these riders are equally fast in the sprint and will be looking to get a podium spot or better from this race. Among them, Swift's support stats leave a little to be desired but the others are pretty well matched.
2018 runner-up Kennaugh, last year's third placed finisher Howard and last year's runner-up Groenewegen find themselves at the lower end of the favourite's list, which is perhaps not doing their capabilities much justice. As can be seen from the past results, they have good pedigree in this race and one shouldn't count them out in this race at any cost.
The two riders built in the closest image of top favourite Van Stayen, also find themselves at the lower end of the favourite's list. Demare and Van der Lijke do not have a great history with this race, with is perhaps surprising given their skillset. They will be hoping to change this stat this time around.
| FLA | HIL | RES | SPR | ACC | Vanderbiest | 74 | 64 | 69 | 82 | 77 | Eislers | 77 | 67 | 76 | 80 | 76 | Enger | 73 | 69 | 73 | 81 | 78 | Samolenkov | 74 | 64 | 71 | 81 | 79 | Silvestre | 78 | 67 | 71 | 80 | 81 | Petit | 76 | 65 | 72 | 80 | 78 | Holloway | 77 | 68 | 76 | 79 | 81 | Appollonio | 74 | 66 | 66 | 81 | 78 | Pedersen | 77 | 69 | 80 | 78 | 77 |
Vanderbiest, Enger, Samolenkov and Pedersen are the riders who will lead their respective teams and find themselves on the outsider's list.
Eislers, Silvestre, Petit, Holloway and Appollonio are expected to play the role of the prime leadout/last chaser for their respective team leaders in this race. They are quite capable to mix it up with the better riders but will probably not get their chance on this occasion.

Nakhon failed. Moscow must go better surely.
Quick opportunity to redeem themselves. |

Let's hope for a race where attackers make the difference, we got an aggressive squad around David Per to make some impact and not loose too much to Evonik & Festina. |

Best thing we can hope for is the whole team just turning up to the start line. Thanks for the preview.

Hope Teunissen tries something. Other than that, we're mostly just spectators here.

Already the final chance for Van Stayen this season and its a hugely important race. Ofc im dreaming of a fourth victory but it will be tough. Top favourite is imo Coquard but its so often a messy final.
I am a bit worried about my leadout but my team is so strong here that we should be able to mark all late attacks with our own guys.
Im hyped, lets bring it on

Our "rivals" in the fight to avoid relegation did really, really well in Nakhhon, which only adds pressure on us here. We don't have a team to perform big points, but hopefully we can sneak a rider or two inside the top 30, be it Silva, Trondsen or Yzeiraj. Please bother to sprint for minor placings! |

Excited for this. Nakhon went really well with a similar team. The parcours here is of course not that good for the roleurs with the less hills, but hope we will make it a tough final and that we can score some points with our depth.

Ewan was on the podium in our last PT race, can he repeat? Well he's not a top favorite which is a massive boost. And hopefully it allows Ricki or Kek to mix it in as well.
Anyway, only here for fun!

Last season showed that Coquard is capable of winning these races (as he should be), but we also know that it can go in all kind of directions really! We don't have a lot of help for him, but as most teams will be interested in keeping things together and we have Karatzios to powerhouse towards the end we have to hope for a good result. As always we need a podium. We got that in Thailand, and need it even more here to keep up having a shot at a PT podium.

Always love to see a late attack stay away, though a bit disappointed that we didn't have any riders following the move.
Decent race all in all by the team. Could have hoped to avoid behind caught behind splits etc, but 100 or so points collected is a solid result, as every points is very much needed for us.
Big result for Isostar in the title race.

Wow at times that looked like a mountain stage on the flat. Monstrous tempo and pretty cool to see some FL beasts take it instead of the sprinters.

Congrats Croatia, huge step towards the crown!
Really didnt like the Evonik tactics in the final. How in the world can Van Stayen end up in the lead of the peleton with 3km to go when two Evonik guys are chilling one row behind - presumably Dzamastagic and Stoltz. And how does none of them follow the late attacks - especially with one of them sitting directly Kwok. Very questionable...
Eislers 120th... dropped super early. Why do i even bother thinking about leadout possibilities?
Thanks for the report!

Well that was certainly a fun race!
Ewan in the podium of the sprinters Totally fun how he does better in PT races than PCT ones. Proof we are one of the weirdest teams in the MG and i love it! One more WC entry to go this year for Altur to miraculously win and confirm this.

No idea why, but my team always sits in the late area of the peloton...for no reason Groenewegen was dropped here just like Olivier regularly did in the Tour de France and plenty of other times...
In the relegation fight it hurts to lose out on 2 sprinter classics in a row now due to bad positioning...when in the past he was able to sprint onto the podium here.
Hurts even more when then there is a random result with basically all other direct relegation rivals on the positive side with Air France, Rakuten or Volvo.
Plus it was my win goal as it was good in the past...
Post TdF I was very optimistic to stay above, after the last two classics, which basically are close to a 0 pointer, it really is tough.
Also for most other favourites a race to forget.
Thanks for the coverage though. Great report, nice to read, just not the result I was hoping for. |

Bad.
Just like in basically every classic, Demare is set up perfectly until a late shuffle right before the sprint sees him horribly out of position.
Congrats to Isostar for making it quite hard for anyone to catch them again.

This is exactly why we did not pick a 2nd-tier sprinter but nobody that is really faster than Per and could be considered a sprinter to make sure we're in every attack. He attacks and he almost delivers the win. Superb race, what an effort by our home-grown guy. Congrats to AirFrance, 3 in the Top15 is a pretty decent result for Evonik too. Thanks for the great report! |

Well Arashiro delivered. He's basically the teams best sprinter. Too bad he didnt win, as he created the winning move, but I doubt the difference between a win and 3rd would save the season, so not worth worrying about.
Thanks for the report!
