Nakhon Ratchasima Trophy
Welcome to Thailand for the fifth edition of the Nakhon Ratchasima Trophy! Ten local laps of 18 km see the riders finish after 181.6 km. Not your average sprinter classic, as there is quite some elevation. The maximum gradient of the local hill is around 5.5%, but it has a constant gradient of 3% over a couple of km. The stronger rouleurs wil definitely like this part, as it should provide them with an opportunity to get rid of the sprinters. Let’s take a look at the best sprinters and rouleurs to be at the start tomorrow.
| FLAT | SPR | ACC | STA | RES | Coquard | 73 | 84 | 83 | 71 | 74 | Degenkolb | 76 | 84 | 81 | 73 | 71 | Lo Cicero | 72 | 84 | 78 | 71 | 63 | Swift | 73 | 83 | 81 | 72 | 69 | Grosu | 73 | 83 | 80 | 74 | 70 | Groenewegen | 73 | 82 | 81 | 74 | 71 | Van der Lijke | 73 | 82 | 79 | 73 | 71 | Avelino | 70 | 82 | 77 | 69 | 65 | Samolenkov | 74 | 81 | 79 | 75 | 71 | Enger | 73 | 81 | 78 | 71 | 73 | Van Poppel | 72 | 81 | 78 | 74 | 71 | Cavendish | 71 | 81 | 78 | 71 | 68 | Ciolek | 73 | 81 | 76 | 70 | 66 | Itami | 75 | 80 | 82 | 71 | 67 | Guardini | 72 | 80 | 82 | 74 | 69 | Silvestre | 78 | 80 | 81 | 70 | 71 | Kemboi | 78 | 80 | 80 | 74 | 77 | Bonifazio | 79 | 80 | 80 | 68 | 75 | Drapac | 71 | 80 | 79 | 70 | 65 |
The first name on the list is immediately the favourite of tomorrow’s race, Coquard has the acceleration and the speed, but we all know being the favourite isn’t the same as being the one that actually crosses the line first. Former winners Degenkolb and Lo Cicero will do their best to avoid him doing so. As if those three aren’t enough, other proven top sprinter to be joining them at the startlist include Swift, Grosu and Groenewegen. Aegon – Peroni really need their Dutch superstar to perform, as they’re one of the teams in danger of relegating to the PCT.
Van der Lijke, Avelino, Samolenkov, Enger, Cavendish, Itami Kemboi are their team’s leaders, and in especially the Japanese from GCN has already shown us some nice things this season. Bonifazio is a mystery. Special mention goes to Drapac, who has won this race in the past, but probably won’t be good enough to compete in the PTHC edition.
Many expect a mass sprint, but the accidental parcours might be ideal for a breakaway win or late attack to win the Nakhon Ratchasima Trophy. Let’s have a look at the best rouleurs at the start of tomorrow’s race.
| FLAT | SPR | ACC | STA | RES | Andersen | 81 | 76 | 74 | 77 | 78 | Wisniowski | 80 | 73 | 76 | 75 | 76 | Rowe | 78 | 79 | 80 | 76 | 70 | Vanbilsen | 78 | 72 | 71 | 80 | 74 | Kneisky | 78 | 66 | 69 | 74 | 73 | Feng | 78 | 60 | 62 | 74 | 72 | Pedersen | 77 | 78 | 77 | 78 | 80 | Bar | 77 | 77 | 76 | 75 | 72 | Manakov | 77 | 72 | 76 | 77 | 68 | Gerts | 77 | 72 | 70 | 76 | 80 | Mraouni | 77 | 71 | 74 | 71 | 72 | Würtz | 77 | 66 | 70 | 78 | 78 |
Grieg – Maersk really present on this list, with Andersen and Wisniowski beating all the other rouleurs in theory. Don’t understimate the power of Rowe though, who has a patent on succesful late attacks in races like these, also thanks to his strong sprinting capacities. Vanbilsen will probably battle for the leadership status against teammate Bonifazio again, at least that’s how it turned out so far this season. Kneisky and Feng two other interesting names, but as they both have sprinters to work for, they shouldn’t be the ones to expect an attack from.
Good luck to everyone, here is the startlist:

Go Drapac! Still have fond memories of him taking the win here, hopefully he can do the same for Adastra!

The start of Groenewegens late season run. Hopefully he can ride those on a consistent level always close to podium/top5 as his points are needed a lot. |

Gerts and Grosu need to deliver some good results in these final races and this is their first opportunity to do so.

Bring on the flat attacks! We have to make the race hard, that's for sure. Hopefully we'll try some late attacks and we can get a couple in the top 20-30. Not sure if Pedersen will sprint or if he possibly might try to attack, but I guess the ideal would be Wisniowski/Kragh attacking and Pedersen going for the sprint. Fingers crossed for a good race!

This is the kind of race that breaks PCM. Over half the guys on the favorites list won't sprint, there's just too many. Hoping that either Grieg can attack and cause an upset or Coquard can somehow pull it off.

As much as I really need a big performance here from Avelino, can’t say I’m expecting much. Hopefully a bit of breakaway luck falls our way
Good luck to all!

Would dig a Rowe late attack of course, don't think he's pulled one off at PTHC level

One of very few “must perform”-races left in our calender. I wouldn’t be surprised to get a very bad result though, as these races can go in all directions.

Getting a mention in the report would already be a good milestone for us.
Looking forward to know who's going to get beaten by Kemboi! Good luck everyone!

Fingers crossed we make the sprinters roulette wheel and sprint here. Probably not getting anything more than a top 10 here but we can only hope.

Not a win, but very, very happy with the way we performed. Always with a good amount of riders near the front and good attacks from both Pedersen and Wisniowski. Okay, we could have hoped for a place on the podium, but two riders top 10, four riders top 20 and six riders amongst the top 40 really is what we wanted with the team we sent here.
Congrats to Oleg on a great win. Both Tinkoff and ISA with some very important points in the relegation fight. A good score for us as well, so with this race and Herbiers, we should be above the line again. Looking forward to Moscow now!
Thanks for the report, Nemolito!

Actually that went better than expected, although a tough race like this should always have Bonifazio at the front, but still a good result pointwise. Congrats Tinkoff and thanks for the report Nemo!

Absolutely brilliant effort from Rowe in such a field, attacking and working and chasing and sprinting against some of the world's best, awesome ride! 4th is a very very solid 90 points for us, with the rest of the calendar not favouring us we'll take all the overachieving we can get our grubby hands on!

Expectedly poor from Avelino but just a reflection of our season really.
Thank you for the report! And congrats to those who picked up much needed results and points here.

Wow... That was bad. If Van Der Hoorn didn't attack, I would have only remembered a 162th for Groenewegen...
Good that my team worked all day.
Big blow for me in the relegation fight. In especially as Tinkoff took a highly surprising win. |
