The Volta a Portugal is back, with a new route, a new duration and a new place on the calendar. The race remains in the PTHC category, and is expected to once again favour the climbers who can tackle the hills well. There is something for everyone in this race though, unless you specialize on the cobbles. The race starts with a Prologue, followed by two sprint stages, which are anything but regulation flat stages. Then there are four hilly stages followed by a hard mountain stage with a mountain top finish. The race rounds out with a moderate length ITT, which could turn the GC around on the last day!
| MON | HIL | TT | STA | RES | REC | ACC | DHL | Gesink | 81 | 79 | 78 | 75 | 77 | 77 | 65 | 64 | Pluchkin | 84 | 74 | 78 | 77 | 77 | 77 | 73 | 65 | Lopez | 79 | 82 | 71 | 76 | 74 | 74 | 78 | 71 | Kudus | 82 | 77 | 72 | 79 | 77 | 79 | 70 | 67 | Meintjes | 80 | 78 | 71 | 77 | 76 | 78 | 69 | 74 | Oomen | 80 | 75 | 74 | 78 | 77 | 78 | 69 | 68 | Talansky | 79 | 77 | 72 | 75 | 76 | 77 | 69 | 66 | Choi | 80 | 74 | 75 | 77 | 76 | 79 | 68 | 71 | Sagan | 74 | 83 | 68 | 78 | 74 | 70 | 76 | 78 | Carthy | 81 | 75 | 67 | 77 | 76 | 78 | 69 | 65 | Latour | 79 | 75 | 70 | 80 | 78 | 80 | 74 | 73 | Bennett | 81 | 76 | 65 | 75 | 74 | 79 | 73 | 63 |
With a perfect combination of climbing and time-trialing abilities, Gesink looks to be the top favourite for this race. Not far behind him, with better mountain skills and lower hills abilities is Pluchkin, and these two look like the ones to be fighting for the win in this race.
Running them close should be Lopez, who only needed to be a little better against the clock to be ranked higher in the favourites list!
Kudus and defending champion Meintjes look like the other top contenders for the podium. Both riders are excellent all-round climbers, with slight weaknesses against the clock. Kudus and Repsol will be looking to start off their season on a high.
The next lot of Oomen, Talansky, Choi, Sagan, Carthy, Latour and Bennett are very closely matched and it is anyone's guess how they will end up in the final classification.
Sagan is the only pure puncher to feature in our favourite's list!
| MON | HIL | TT | STA | RES | REC | ACC | DHL | Penasa | 80 | 74 | 70 | 75 | 72 | 77 | 76 | 64 | Bobridge | 69 | 83 | 77 | 74 | 74 | 69 | 80 | 66 | Tvetcov | 77 | 75 | 74 | 72 | 71 | 76 | 73 | 64 | Senni | 77 | 73 | 74 | 76 | 79 | 76 | 72 | 73 | Karnulin | 78 | 74 | 70 | 76 | 75 | 77 | 70 | 73 | Smith | 78 | 75 | 68 | 72 | 74 | 75 | 74 | 71 | Brenes | 79 | 73 | 69 | 73 | 80 | 70 | 70 | 65 | Brambilla | 78 | 75 | 69 | 74 | 72 | 74 | 62 | 69 | Henao Montoya | 81 | 70 | 70 | 74 | 78 | 75 | 72 | 61 | Intxausti | 80 | 69 | 75 | 75 | 75 | 72 | 67 | 62 | Warchol | 78 | 74 | 67 | 76 | 77 | 73 | 70 | 68 | Squire | 77 | 77 | 65 | 70 | 70 | 76 | 71 | 65 |
The list of outsiders mostly consists of riders who are strong in two of the three prime abilities for this, with one weakness. Bobridge needs a mention as the other pure puncher to make it into one of the lists.
Henao Montoya and Intxausti are the best climbers in this group but their other abilities push them down the pecking order.
Expect some or many of these riders to go into breaks in the second half of this race, in case they fall down the standings early on.
| MON | HIL | RES | ACC | Pluchkin | 84 | 74 | 77 | 73 | Kudus | 82 | 77 | 77 | 70 | Gesink | 81 | 79 | 77 | 65 | Carthy | 81 | 75 | 76 | 69 | Bennett | 81 | 76 | 74 | 73 | Henao Montoya | 81 | 70 | 78 | 72 | Meintjes | 80 | 78 | 76 | 69 | Oomen | 80 | 75 | 77 | 69 | Choi | 80 | 74 | 76 | 68 | Penasa | 80 | 74 | 72 | 76 | Intxausti | 80 | 69 | 75 | 67 |
Pluchkin is by far the best climber in this race, and will hope to use his advantage to leave the better punchers behind on Stage 8. All of Kudus, Gesink, Carthy, Bennett, Oomen and Meintjes are more than capable on the shorter climbs as well.
| MON | HIL | RES | ACC | Sagan | 74 | 83 | 74 | 76 | Bobridge | 69 | 83 | 74 | 80 | Lopez | 79 | 82 | 74 | 78 | Betancourt | 73 | 80 | 71 | 74 | Waeytens | 71 | 80 | 70 | 73 | Gesink | 81 | 79 | 77 | 65 | Gautier | 67 | 79 | 71 | 76 | Meintjes | 80 | 78 | 76 | 69 | De Plus | 76 | 78 | 73 | 72 | Teuns | 75 | 78 | 73 | 72 | Siskevicius | 73 | 78 | 72 | 75 | Bellis | 68 | 78 | 71 | 75 |
Sagan and Bobridge are the best punchers in the race with the former able to hang on with the groups on the harder mountains too.
While Lopez, Gesink and Meintjes are serious contenders, the likes of Waeytens and Betancourt will be hoping to use the four hills stages to pull off good results.
| FLA | TT | Lammertink | 74 | 80 | Viennet | 72 | 80 | Mottin | 69 | 79 | Nareklishvili | 74 | 78 | Pluchkin | 73 | 78 | Hofer | 73 | 78 | Leung | 73 | 78 | Gesink | 71 | 78 | Bobridge | 73 | 77 | Postlberger | 73 | 77 | Hussein | 68 | 77 |
Lammertink and Viennet look to be favourites for the final stage time-trial, if they survive that long. Watch out for Hofer as he has a innate tendency to over-perform.
Pluchkin and Gesink could be fighting it out for top spot when this stage comes around. They will surely be aiming to gain ground on their rivals on this stage.
| FLA | HIL | RES | SPR | ACC | Nelson | 72 | 60 | 64 | 81 | 81 | Kupfernagel | 74 | 64 | 66 | 80 | 80 | Goss | 72 | 65 | 68 | 80 | 75 | Granjel Cabrera | 74 | 68 | 69 | 79 | 75 | Awang | 64 | 52 | 62 | 79 | 83 | Mareczko | 74 | 61 | 73 | 78 | 77 | Bar | 77 | 70 | 72 | 77 | 76 | Kamberaj | 74 | 69 | 73 | 77 | 76 | Dzervus | 73 | 66 | 72 | 77 | 77 | Ackermann | 72 | 77 | 71 | 77 | 80 | Theuns | 72 | 74 | 73 | 77 | 76 | Boudat | 71 | 68 | 72 | 77 | 76 | Tivani | 70 | 66 | 78 | 77 | 78 |
Nelson is the fastest rider in the race, but his abilities are not well suited for all the bumps on the flat rated stages. This could swing the advantage towards Kupfernagel, Goss or even Granjel Cabrera.
The likes of Ackermann and Theuns are interesting because of their ability to better handle the profiles in this race.
| FLA | HIL | PRL | Chavanne | 75 | 64 | 82 | Leung | 73 | 64 | 82 | Stoltz | 80 | 68 | 80 | Viennet | 72 | 67 | 80 | Lammertink | 74 | 69 | 79 | Schomber | 72 | 58 | 79 | Mottin | 69 | 61 | 79 | Pluchkin | 73 | 74 | 78 | Hofer | 73 | 65 | 78 | Gesink | 71 | 79 | 78 |
Our first view of the Prologue double-punch of Evonik in the form of Stoltz and Chavanne. Leung is good enough to spoil their party though!
There is a slight uphill finish in the Prologue and this could play into the hands of either Pluchkin and Gesink, and give them an opportunity to perhaps lead the race from start to finish!

Ah not the field I wanted but the definitely the one I feared for our top 5 goal and Bennett's first 81 outing. Certainly not impossible especially if we take a good gap into the TT to guys like Latour, Talansky, Choi and Oomen (who we very well may not be ahead of anyway) but will be a hard task. Should be an entertaining race though
Spoiler No, no... when you do that with cyclists, like the Evonik manager said about Xero, and when you do things like that about a man like Nils Schomber, I've kept really quiet, but I'll tell you something, he went down in my estimation when he said that. We have not resorted to that, but I'll tell you, you can tell him now if you're watching it, we're still fighting for this prologue, and he's got to go to Portugal and get something, and... and... I'll tell you, honestly, I will love it if we beat them, love it!

Apart from the TTs where I hope Mottin could squeeze out a couple of stage results. I want to see my team in the breakaway as much as possible

A slightly weakened squad due to triple clash, but it's fairly well balanced, Krizek should get at least 2 stage wins, minimum expectation is 6 stage wins total, should be doable.

I didnt expect a startlist this week tbh. Could be a golden race for Evonik as well as many PCT teams.

Im very excited going into this race.
I have one guy for pretty much every stage except the tt. Chavanne/Stoltz for the prologue, Dzamastagic for the tough flat stages and of course Lopez for everything else. As i wrote in my HQ, i would love to win the teams classification while Lopez is a top 3 GC candidate himself. Big ambitions for the race and the expectations are huge.
Fantastic preview btw!
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

All in all that's an ok startlist for us. Oomen is here with good support so hoping for some points!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

A top 10 should be in the cards for Talansky, but what will decide if our race was decent is whether we can get more than a few riders in the top 30: Teuns, Dyball, Masnadas and Sequera should be able to grab a few points here and there. Our season doesn't certainly depend on this race, but if we want to improve upon last year's showing in the PT we need to start scoring just as consistently. Thanks for the preview Abhi!

Top5 Goal here. Only Pluchkin as a better climber in the race, which is a good thing, but several stronger puncheurs in the field. I think the Top5 is extremely likely, but we'll need the mountain stage to produce some gaps if we want to compete for the GC win.
Hopefully Barbero can get involved in some of the hard sprints? Doubt it, but it would be nice. And of course we can't forget about the MG debut of our next superstar Attila Valter. Too early and too tough competition most likely to get any point from U25 standings

This is actually a stronger field than I expected, especially considering how weak the field was last season
For Carthy the aim has to be a top 10, with Gesink, Pluchkin, Lopez, Meintjes and Kudus clearly the favourites for the top 5 here. I think he may also struggle to beat Oomen and Choi given the TT at the end (although as it isn't pan flat the MO stat should hopefully come into play) and Latour (plus Talansky to an extent) are very much like Yates, who has always excelled here. So fighting for 10th with Bennett it is, just to annoy jandal
I wanted to send Van der Sande here but ran out of race days, which is a shame as he could potentially have been favourite for both sprint stages looking at this field. However Kamberaj should still be able to contend pretty well considering the other sprinters in the field. I'm also interested to see how Guerreiro and Figueiredo do in their home race, both of who should score us some good depth points behind Carthy. |

Our first goal of the season. Unfortunately this start list is much stronger than I expected, I was until the last day deciding between sending Montoya or Paulinho for this race. Unfortunately I think I made the wrong decision, Paulinho would be able to get a better result with the riders present. My hope is that the hills are not too hard and so Montoya will be able to make a difference on the mountain.
Kupfernagel should be able to be in the fight for stages 2 and 3 although it seems to me that these stages will not be discussed during the sprint.
As a former team rider and now being in our Duolingo friends, I would like to see Gesink win this race again.

Yeah, Portugal Was a great race to report last year!
A bit of a pity that stages 4 and 9 were removed; both were won by breakaways last year, and both would actually have been great chances for pure puncheurs. In my opinion, the course is even more climber-friendly than in 2019 (although the puncheurs didn't really use the two aforementioned stages to their full adavantage), with all these long final hills/climbs still in there.
I'm definitely looking forward to see how my loan-out Masnada can do here, after a pretty anonymous debut for Generali in Badaling. Thomas Boudat is here as well; he did a great prologue last year in the Philips shirt, let's see if he can repeat this wearing the Volvo jersey

Quite a strong startlist. I hope Smith still can be competitive. Else I hope that my team will join some breaks for a change and Leung has his chance to redeem himself in the prologue for his underwhelming result in Qatar. |

More accomplished riders here than I would have originally wanted here considering this is a win goal for us. Gesink is the outright favourite I'd imagine but I guess Lopez shouldn't be so far behind.
Meintjes could sneak in a podium but I'd be satisfied with a top 5 finish in the end.

It's really uplifting to see Gesink so high in the favourits list. It would be great to take the win, but with Pluschkin and Lopez around it's bound to be a tough challenge.
It is going to be interesting either. Looking forward to it. Thanks for the amazing preview Abi!

Think we should both be annoyed if that happens Hopefully Carthy (who casting my mind back I think might have been our first ever bidding war!) and Bennett recognise an alliance to distance the 79-80 guys with good TT would be a good idea for them and they can both get some time before stage 9 so they can try fighting for 6th instead

Mottin strikes out on stage 1, we can never seem to hit the heights in the prologues
On the other hand it was cool to see a lvl 4 Penko and lvl 3 Christodoulos get some TV time at this level
Now for some breakaways please

Not good at all from Schomber, weirdly good from 72PL Waersted to beat him
