The Herald Sun Tour reaches it's 10th edition. The organizers have pulled out all the stops to make this a successful running of the event. The race clashes with another Continental flat event, Solidarnosc, which saw a lot of the top sprinters taking part. As a result, the startlist for this race isn't premier, but that also means we could be in for a really dramatic and unpredictable race.
The favourites for this race can be divided into two categories, the sprinters and the time trial specialists, who'll look to take advantage of the medium length TT on Stage 4.
First up, it's the sprinters.
| Name | HIL | RES | REC | SPR | ACC | Thorsen | 54 | 56 | 69 | 82 | 85 | Von Hoff | 66 | 74 | 77 | 79 | 77 | Wippert | 67 | 70 | 80 | 78 | 82 | Nizzolo | 64 | 67 | 71 | 80 | 79 | Mezgec | 67 | 70 | 76 | 79 | 77 | Boev | 65 | 67 | 79 | 78 | 78 | Habtom | 61 | 75 | 80 | 77 | 78 | King | 65 | 71 | 79 | 78 | 73 | Opie | 66 | 71 | 78 | 77 | 77 | Bogdanovics | 62 | 69 | 75 | 78 | 77 | Markus | 67 | 68 | 78 | 77 | 78 | Krasnov | 63 | 67 | 75 | 78 | 77 | Korzh | 59 | 65 | 74 | 78 | 80 | Cimolai | 66 | 68 | 78 | 77 | 77 | Haddi | 65 | 69 | 77 | 77 | 77 | Barbari | 63 | 69 | 78 | 76 | 79 | Lovassy | 64 | 68 | 73 | 77 | 77 | Reza | 71 | 70 | 76 | 76 | 75 | Geschke | 74 | 70 | 73 | 76 | 76 | Szalontay | 52 | 65 | 71 | 78 | 77 | Vinther | 65 | 64 | 77 | 77 | 74 | Richeze | 65 | 70 | 71 | 76 | 74 | Gatto | 73 | 62 | 73 | 77 | 70 | Torckler | 72 | 70 | 74 | 75 | 73 | Zanotti | 67 | 66 | 74 | 75 | 75 | Ratto | 60 | 66 | 77 | 75 | 73 | Bole | 73 | 66 | 69 | 75 | 73 | Breschel | 68 | 64 | 72 | 75 | 70 |
Thorsen is the strongest pure sprinter on paper, but his really weak backups mean he more often than not fails to produce when it matters. The first stage ends in an uphill sprint, and those are exactly the types of stages where he struggles.
Von Hoff, Wippert. Mezgec and Nizzolo will be looking to use their overall abilities, which suit this race quite well.
Boev is not the fastest sprinter, but can be expected to start getting better as the race progresses, when tiredness starts to creep into the others' legs.
Habtom too will look to depend on his energy stats to get an edge over his faster rivals.
Riders like Reza and Geschke will be looking to take advantage of the uphill finish on Stage 1, being the best going uphill among the favourites. Gatto, Torckler and Bole fall into the same category. A lot of bumps on all the flat stages means that these sprinters are likely to perform better than what their 'sprint' stats indicate.
| Name | HIL | TT | SPR | ACC | Olman | 57 | 79 | 69 | 70 | Mottin | 61 | 79 | 51 | 55 | Kovalev | 56 | 78 | 67 | 75 | Martin | 71 | 78 | 64 | 72 | Sterobo | 62 | 78 | 56 | 73 | Hacecký | 63 | 77 | 71 | 76 | Johansson | 59 | 77 | 69 | 71 | Christian | 69 | 77 | 68 | 72 | Laizer | 58 | 77 | 65 | 70 | Downey | 67 | 77 | 61 | 72 | Pökälä | 71 | 77 | 60 | 65 | Bouet | 67 | 76 | 67 | 73 | Cheyne | 66 | 76 | 65 | 67 | Craddock | 74 | 76 | 61 | 68 | Zoidl | 74 | 76 | 61 | 69 | Grabovski | 70 | 76 | 59 | 68 | Burke | 60 | 76 | 59 | 62 | Kireva | 69 | 75 | 70 | 73 | Sepulveda | 76 | 75 | 70 | 73 | Bauer | 72 | 75 | 69 | 68 | Joeaar | 71 | 75 | 65 | 62 | Bodnar | 66 | 75 | 65 | 62 | Ahmad Zamri | 70 | 75 | 59 | 69 | Abreu | 73 | 75 | 52 | 73 |
Olman and Mottin are the fastest against the clock as per the bookies, and are perhaps the top favourites to win this race, given the length of the TT.
Running them close would be Kovalev, Martin and Sterobo. Unfortunately for Martin, the TT is perhaps a little too flat to give him a chance to use his puncher skills.
Hacecky, Kireva and Sepulveda are the only TT specialists who can sprint, but even in this weakened field, it looks unlikely that they'll challenge anywhere other than Stage 4. Supelveda is excellent on the hills as well.

Go Steele! What a poor startlist but a handle for the subtop guys to shine!

A good chance for Mezgec to score some points. The TT on the other hand I have little faith in, but we need a strong performance here.

Reus has a pretty low race day count for a rider that has been performing average at best through out the season

Sprints and time trial. Obviously made for the Rothaus crew.
Not having the strongest here in Van Heerden and Coutinho but Wippert should also be in for some top results or even a win. Markus as leadout potentially while some time trialists could get a top10 TT result. |

This might be a difficult race for us, but hoping for a few good stage results from Korzh. Stage 3 and 4 should suit him well.

We really need a very strong TT here, we only have weak options for the sprints so need the TT to be big for us and decisive for the GC if we want to keep our promotion hopes alive.

Eyeing on that delicious TT, means the world to the GC and we brought the absolute TT squad to try and have as big a score as possible, hoping Mottin flies as in Windhoek

Went all in for Solidarnocs. Regretting that a bit now, would have been great to at least have Liepins here knowing how he have failed at doing leadouts all year.
Anyway going for breajs, freak results like Vinther have occasionally pulled out in the past and a great TT from Pökälä.

Solid start from Mezgec, but we need some even better results than 5th. At least all our TTers stayed in the peloton with the surprising split.

The stage podium is nice but seeing Olman dropped in the run in is more important as that pretty much puts an end to our promotion hopes after the good work we had done to get back in contention the last couple of races.

Great job by the 22 years old Grosser. Also a nice punch by Geschke to grab the Podium. |
