Bayern Rundfahrt
History
| Year | Winner | Team | | 2017 | Richard Laningo Laizer | Andorra Cycling Project | | 2016 | Luis Leon Sanchez Gil | Netia - Norske Skog | | 2015 | Kristjan Koren | Gazelle | | 2014 | Ian Bibby | Jaguar - Eritel | | 2013 | Dario Diaz | Fuji | | 2012 | Oscar Freire | Koppert Cycling Team | | 2011 | Mikhail Ignatiev | Wiggle - San Pellegrino | | 2010 | Mikhail Ignatiev | 100% Me |
Welcome to Southern Germany and the region of Bavaria for the Bayern Rundfahrt. Last year the race was part of the C2 category, but has been promoted to C1 for this year. In the past the race has centered around time trials and a bit of hilly terrain. Laizer won last year, when the race contained four flat stages and a time trial, the latter being the deciding factor in the GC. For this year the route has been revised, and reduced from five to four stages. Only one flat stage, two long time trials and a mountain stage is the recipe for this event. Therefore there are three types of riders who might challenge for the victory: pure climbers, pure time trialists with a bit of mountain skill, or hybrids with good qualities in both disciplines.
Profiles

The first stage is a 47-kilometer long time trial around Wassertrüdingen. Stage two goes from Vilshoven to Freilassing, and should normally be the only chance for sprinters this race. Then it's the stage to the ski area of Winklmoos-Alm. The stage is classified as mountain stage but doesn't seem to be too extreme. The last stage is another time trial, this time around Haßfurt and slightly shorter at 38.9 kilometers.
Startlist

| Favourites | MO | TT | Outsiders | MO | TT | Denifl | 84 | 72 | Borisavljevic | 77 | 74 | Henao Montoya | 82 | 71 | Tvetcov | 77 | 74 | Keizer | 81 | 81 | Kennaugh | 77 | 73 | Eastman | 81 | 76 | Augustyn | 77 | 71 | Shikai | 81 | 76 | Ortega | 76 | 75 | Choi | 80 | 75 | Dees | 75 | 77 | Duarte | 80 | 75 | Rolland | 74 | 77 | Warbasse | 78 | 74 | Koren | 72 | 78 | Diaz | 78 | 72 | Reus | 70 | 78 | Nepomnyachsniy | 77 | 77 | Coppel | 66 | 83 | Novak | 77 | 76 | Cornu | 66 | 80 | Brändle | 76 | 79 | Sergent | 65 | 80 |
Denifl and Henao Montoya are arguably the best climbers in the race. Unfortunately for them, their time trial skills are sub-par so they need to gain a lot of time on the mountain stage.
The most complete rider on the startlist is Keizer. He can gain a lot of time on the two time trials and has enough strength in the mountains to stay with the others, or even gain more time. It's his race to lose basically.
Choi, Duarte, Eastman and Shikai are four very similar riders. Good in the mountains and decent on the time trials, though a level below Keizer. If the Dutchman has a bad day, these are the riders most likely to capitalize on it.
Riders like Warbasse and Diaz might hope for a top ten, but the win might be a step too high. A lot of riders with a decent stat combination with chances of a top ten: Borisavljevic, Brändle, Nepomnyachsniy, Novak and the list goes on.
Coppel is the best time trialist in the field and prime favourite for those two stages. In the past he has shown to be capable of winning stage races with time trials and hilly stages. This race contains a light mountain stage, but if the pace is slow and he manages to limit his time loss he might be a very dangerous outsider.
Cornu and Sergent are slightly worse on time trials but might maintain their high GC positions if things go their way. Former winner Koren (2015) lines up as well, hoping to become the second two-time winner after Ignatiev (2010/2011).
| Climbers | MO | TT | Time trialists | MO | TT | Nazaret | 80 | 65 | Zmorka | 59 | 82 | Anacona | 79 | 66 | Ford | 52 | 81 | Pantano Gómez | 79 | 54 | Schädlich | 54 | 80 | Rodrigues | 78 | 67 | Viviani | 60 | 79 | Manfredi | 78 | 65 | Mottin | 58 | 79 | Ndayisenga | 78 | 65 | Robert | 57 | 79 | Signorini | 78 | 65 | Stannard | 53 | 79 | Stetina | 78 | 64 | Martin | 67 | 78 | Elissonde | 78 | 63 | Tennant | 63 | 78 | Solis | 78 | 58 | Kovalev | 54 | 78 | Hirschlein | 77 | 69 | Li | 53 | 78 | Mai | 77 | 63 | Laizer | 52 | 77 |
Some climbers who are bad at individual time trials might hope to take advantage of this by winning the mountain stage, because that riders isn't dangerous for the GC anymore. Someone like Nazaret perhaps. Others will have to work for their leader, and it remains to be seen how that would affect their chances of a stage win. The home crowds hope for a win by Hirschlein or Mai.
Looking at the time trial, Zmorka might be the only real competitor next to Coppel and Keizer. The Ukrainian won't be a factor in the GC because of his fear of climbs. Maybe a Schädlich or a Martin can benefit from the home advantage.
Special mention for defending champion Laizer, but with the new mountain stage and the higher level of the competition it is unlikely we'll see him on the top step of the podium again.
| Sprinters | SP | ACC | Guillén | 81 | 82 | Roelandts | 80 | 79 | Petit | 80 | 78 | Ulanowski | 80 | 77 | Bouhanni | 80 | 77 | Meyer | 80 | 76 | Willwohl | 79 | 78 | Mezgec | 79 | 77 | Te Brake | 79 | 76 | Brus | 78 | 78 | Westling | 78 | 74 | Haussler | 78 | 73 |
One stage for the sprinters, but that didn't deter some of them of making the trip here. Guillén rides here for CT team Swisslion, a rare chance for them to score major points in a PCT race. He has the best lead-out in Mezgec.
More renowed names from the PCT division are the likes of Bouhanni, Meyer, Petit, Roelandts and Ulanowski. It all depends on the legs and positioning that day. With only one chance they are determined not to mess it up.
Te Brake and Willwohl with an outside shot, and then some amateur teams hoping for a surprise result: Brus for Bianchi, Haussler for Wiesenhof and Westling for Vattenfall.

I believe this is the last of the string of PCT races we are not a part of. Still, always plenty to pay attention to with the relegation fight on the line.

Need a bad day from the big three, and a good day from Shikai and Choi on the mountain and we can hopefully make up for it in the TT and Top 3 this race. If both could Top 5 or even Top 10, that would also be good, but I think worse than Top 5 would be a little disappointing.

Feels like its been a long time since Azteca has raced last, this is one of the better profiles for Eastman so going to need a good race from him with so many TT miles available.

Home race for Kraftwerk but our only hopes are a couple of podiums in the TT and sprint.

I’ve got a variety of riders here who are capable and need to do well in order to score vital points. This has the potential to be the race to put us back in with a fighting chance of escaping relegation.
Nazaret is lacking the TT stat but I’d still hope he can have a decent GC if he goes on and wins or does well in the Mountain stage. Borisavljevic could definitely have a good GC and fight for the Youth classification as he has a good TT stat along with a solid MO stat. Corny is unlikely to get a good GC but you never know what can happen on the Mountain stage if he doesn’t lose too much time. I at least hope he can get a good result in the TTs. And then in that second stage we should be in with a good chance of a stage win given we have both Bouhanni and Lobato here.
Need a good race points wise so hopefully the team can deliver!

Interesting squad we are sending here.
This is one of the very few "planning risks" i took with Roelandts, in terms of sending him to stage races where top riders wouldn't come because low points in offer. Hopefully his possible favourite status in the stage doesn't force our team to setup a train for him, because that would be hilarious. The ideal would be the stage win, but i'd be happy with a stage podium.
About Novak, i hope he can build on his Corsica win and his great result in Norway. Can't hope for a great GC result, but i think he has the abilities to finish in the Top10. Then we also bring Ndayisenga, maybe looking for a strong day on the climbing stage to get some points from U25 standings
Can't see past Keizer for the GC win, and anything but a win for him should be weird

Didn't remember this race at all, if Warbasse shows some good legs I believe he can reach the Top10, but they have to come in TT's mainly thats where the race will be decided, the mountain is all about pacing and trying to limit losses.

Relying on Guillen to repeat his Post Danmark performance

Came here for two stage wins, but sadly Carrefour thought the same. Oh well, any points would be welcome!

Can't see Henao getting on the podium with the length of the TTs. Will be very surprised to see a very selective mountain stage tbh. Probably another planning mistake with him. A Top 10 is perhaps the best we can hope for. And that will continue Henao's mediocre season.
Cannot see past Keizer winning this by miles, with the TT guys dominating the climbers in the GC. I hope my predictions are wrong!

First race back in quite a while, hopefully the team remembers how to ride their bikes! Coppel should survive the MT stage I think as it doesn’t look incredibly difficult, and is his race to lose. Would be extremely happy with a podium, Keizer has been a little underwhelming thus far and now is the time to do it!
Thanks for the preview, too!

Coppel doing Coppel stuff. But what a massive ride from Shikai. The climbers still need to ride the mountain(s) aggressively, but this gap for Shikai looks doable against Coppel.

Great ride for Shikai! Im not as confident Coppel will hang on that much on the mountain stage, but you never know, and he could get back atleast a minute on the last TT as well, so Shikai will need a buffer heading into that stage. Overall a great start though, and I hope Choi can ride better on the MT stage too.

Disappointing from Cornu but keeps himself in with a chance. Borisavljevic was strong enough that he could be an interesting threat in the MO stage. Nazaret poor as expected but should have free reign in the MO stage to go for the stage win.
