This great preview was written by Aquarius97. Race will come on Wednesday.
Badaling International
Welcome everyone to the inaugural race of the 2017 Pro Tour season. We are here in China with the Badaling International, a race which is in its seventh edition (plus the same route being used in 2008 Olympics). You can expect all the big puncheurs to be here, but for winning this race you need 3 things. Be a top puncheur, have a decent climbing ability (pure puncheur will struggle here) and the ability to out-sprint other riders in the final uphill km.
I know that last season’s winner, Francesco Ginanni doesn’t meet two of three criteria, but if you look at all other past winners (Sanchez, F.Schleck x2, Cunego and Trofimov) all of them were top puncheurs and either super climbers or great climbers + sprint ability.
If I had to put my money into a rider for the win I'll pick Jan Bakelants to finally win the race after having finished four times second in the last 5 editions. Strava’s manager will hope to repeat Gazelle's success last year, when they won in their PT debut
The other big favourites are Simone Ponzi, Yuri Trofimov and wildcard rider Edvald Boasson Hagen. All these riders should be one-step lower than Bakelants, but with a good day they should be able to win the race.
Other riders who should fight for a top5 place, or maybe the podium if those ahead of them fail, are Francesco Ginanni, Peter Sagan, Toms Skujins, Alexey Lutsenko, Sean de Bie and Wilco Kelderman. I can’t see these riders fighting for the win in all race scenarios, although Ginanni in the reigning champion, but normally they should be “safe” for a top10 place.
And finally some good puncheur who are racing here, but i believe they’ll struggle do their lack of mountain ability and/or not great back-ups are Jack Bobridge, Ben Gastauer, Jay McCarthy or Aleksandar Flügel. Also, i will point out a rider which I expect to do great, despite not having a super HIL stat; Edward Beltran
Giving that the MON/HIL ratio is 0.47, in the table they'll be ordered by their combination of MON, HILL and ACC stats with secondary stats also included in the formula. This should sort those riders better than the pure hill stat order
| Rider | MON | HIL | ACC | Bakelants | 75 | 84 | 78 | Ponzi | 73 | 84 | 80 | Hagen | 70 | 85 | 79 | Bobridge | 69 | 83 | 80 | Trofimov | 77 | 82 | 75 | Lutsenko | 73 | 81 | 81 | Sagan | 74 | 82 | 76 | Skujins | 70 | 83 | 76 | Ginanni | 70 | 83 | 74 | Gastauer | 71 | 82 | 76 | De Bie | 71 | 82 | 75 | Beltran | 79 | 79 | 76 | Koretzky | 71 | 80 | 79 | Kelderman | 71 | 82 | 72 | Flügel | 72 | 81 | 74 | Boswell | 71 | 80 | 76 | Vakoc | 71 | 80 | 74 | | Borges | 70 | 78 | 81 | McCarthy | 67 | 81 | 74 | Demare | 66 | 79 | 81 | | Ben Nasser | 69 | 79 | 77 | Pichon | 70 | 79 | 76 | Slagter | 78 | 78 | 71 | Dyrnes | 72 | 78 | 77 |

Nice preview! I wonder though why you don't include Stamina in your preview though...Of course hoping for Bakelants or Ponzi to win the season opener

Badaling is one of the hilly races that suit Skujins the least. A top 10 would be already decent to start the season. Last season the rest of the team was rather disappointing with every other rider finishing outside the top 100 and I'm hoping to see this changed with improved depth.
Bakelandts and Trofimov are imo the favourites as so often throughout the season.

It's actually used in the formula to order the riders, but i felt like i would be putting too much stats in the table

Not my favorite race, but cool to see the season kicking off. Top-10 would be a good result here, but I expect less. And yeah, Beltran should do well on this parcours.

Very nice preview, hoping for a good start into the season, podium would be pretty sweet.

Hoping for a better result than last year. Simon Spilak have fucked up here a lot, so despite this being a race suited for him I decided to not bring him this time around.
Clement Koretzky could get a top 10 if he performs well, and make use of his ACC stat.

De Bie just outside the top10 favourite list. But I actually hope to see him inside the top10 for most races due to his decent sprint and backup stats.
Great to see the season starting soon and looking forward to the first classic test for my team as the hill classics were rather weak last year in general. |

Nice preview and great to be involved in the first race of the season.
Its the first ever PT race for Kraftwerk, will be happy with top 15 finish for Flügel.

yeah! Our first PT race as a PT team and we dont have a single rider in the preview
Do not have high expectations as in all hilly races this year, but decent depth could make us score some pts anyway |

Excited to witness our PT debut aswell. Comming here with a pretty stacked team so expecting to show our colours. Would be nice to begin with top 5 atleast from Ponzi here. Excited to see Slagter here too, he should to perform well here with his stats combo.

Let's get this thing rolling again!
As always we start the season with an all-star team, although we can't hope for the same result as last year where the random positioning for the bunch sprint favored us extremely.
Expectations are a Top 10 for Kelderman and maybe two further Top 20s with Herklotz and Bongiorno if the race is tough enough.
In case the pace drops at the end, we also had two spare race days for Demare to maybe upset the better puncheurs if he hangs on and recovers in the descent, to a lesser extent the same goes for Felline. Mager also has a decent stat combination for this to add some more support and maybe points.
Of course I cheer for the wildcard and one-trick pony teams here, so go EBH, Bakelants and Ponzi!

Our first outing with EBH, looking forward to that. Other wise very nice to get the real season going, hoping for a top 5.
