Chrono des Herbiers | PT
| 2013 | 2012 | 2011 | | 1. | Fabian Cancellara | Jerome Coppel | Michael Rogers | | 2. | Jerome Coppel | David Zabriskie | David Zabriskie | | 3. | Michael Rogers | Michael Rogers | Jerome Coppel |
The Chrono des Herbiers is the only individual time trial classic on ProTour level, a major battle of the best time trialists on an almost 50 kilometers long course.
Of all the races, this seems to be one of the more predictable ones: In the past, it has been dominated by mostly the same men, with only five different riders on the podium in the last five years. But only three of them are present today, and while they are still amongs the top favorites, there are others who will try to end this supremacy.
Simply Red Bull comes with an extremely strong line-up, having two of the three riders mentioned above: Fabian Cancellara and Jerome Coppel. They're favorites for at least a podium spot but both will aim for the win and everything but that will be a disappointment for a team.
Their main opponent is going to be Jacob Fiedler of ING. Steadily climbing in position over the past four years, from 18th, two times 14th, to finally a fourth spot last year, he's certainly going for the win this year. ING also has the third former winner in its team, namely David Zabriskie. He would need an extraordinary day to repeat his wins from 2010 and 2009, but a top result is still possible. The same applies to teammate Dennis Van Winden, who completes the very ambitious trio.
Taylor Phinney is also one of the absolute top favorites today. The American is certainly amongst the best three or five time trialists and is aiming for a podium at least, having missed it so closely with two fifth and a fourth place in the last three years. His team mate Durbridge has good chances for a nice position, too.
Of those who are probably "only" going to fight for a podium or a Top 5, the Rothaus duo Keijzer and Schädlich stands out, both having scored Top 10s in this race already.
Then there are the Germans Marcel Kittel and Tony Martin. While especially the Vesuvio rider has to be considered even for a podium spot after Top 10 places in the last three years, Martin is more of an outside shot.
Mikhail Ignatiev from wildcard team Metinvest and Becherovka's Jesse Sergent can rely on their above-average rouleur skills, that will be certainly be of use in this long race.
Dominique Cornu leads an ambitious Bpost squad, in which both Bonnet and Flens could score a good result on a strong day.
Team B&O comes with a good team as well, led by Zachary Dempster. Adriano Malori and Joost Postuma can be expected on a similar level, all of them hoping for a Top 5 in the best case.
The very dense field of Top 10 contenders is completed by the likes of Bernaudeau, Goncalves, Viennet and Kovalev.
Finally, there are a few teams with very low hopes of a good results. Lotto – Australia Post, Tinkoff Credit Systems, Prio - Porto, Aker - MOT, Pendleton's, Pokerstars.com and Santander will have a tough time here.

If Santander will take this, something goes seriously wrong in 2014
Some may love the TT-safety these days. Simply Red Bull obviously the most, even though it's too much of a thrill to know that anything but the win would already be kinda disappointing. Coppel will win, my guess.
Looking forward to what Durbridge will do. Also interested in those teams with several quality-TTlers. Those could score nice points on the "safe side". And of course i will follow our PCT-friends here. Repeating our Podium from last year won't be easy forInatiev, but a nice finish is possible.

Hopefully Phinney can take a podium here. Durbridge is a solid second option, but he may get lost in the swarm of 78/79 tt'ers.

At least one in top 10. Minimum two in top 15 and eventually 3 in top 25.
This race has to give me a high scoring.
A top 5 is also possible. So being too far off would be disappointing. |

Coppel really should have won last year, but for an extraordinary performance from Sparticus. Things were mixed in Qatar short TT, but this should allow cream to rise to the top.
Preview is correct I will be disappointed not to win, I ummed about training Coppel instead of Alarcon, decided to gamble on Coppel still being good enough to beat Fiedler and Phinney.
Slight concern that Cancellara will get bad conditions, on the flip side having a middle starter will mean he could get better conditions.

Our first wildcard in 2014 season and already very nice chance for top10 with Ignatiev i hope. Anything behind that would be disappointment, Mikhail needs to build some confidence in PT, so he can go beast mode in PCT TTs later.
Good luck to all, i see this as Coppel vs. Phinney battle

This is a great chance for us to build up some points after our strong Qatar. Cornu will be aiming for a top 5 while Flens and Bonnet should both be capable of at least a top 20 and possibly even top 10s on a good day.
Coppel should take this without any trouble on French soil.

Another race we wont get anything really good from... Atleast we weren't mentioned among the "no-hopers", just with the last possible top 10 rider (more top 25...)

Wow ING are strong!
A top 10 would be amazing, hoping Dempster can pull that off.

A top ten from Malori is expected and required, plus beating Mikhail Ignatiev... no pressure.

Top 10 would be great, I am really looking forward to what Sergent can do here. And hopefully Coppel will take this.

I expect nothing from this one. Coppel must be the favourite, but it will also be interesting see who has a great day of all those time trialists at 78 and 79. |

After at slightly disappointing performance by Fiedler in Qatar, then I expect him to get at least a podium here. 3 guys in top 10 is a must, since these type of races are the ones we really need to do well in if we are to have any hope in avoiding relegation.

Great report!
Some surprising results in there - Ignatiev Cancellara
5th is another outstanding ride by Kittel, his two time trials this season are up there with his U23 TT win as his best MG rides.

Hopefully this was mostly effected by the wind I don't want to see Rogers doing a Cancellara in his most important TT-appearances!
Congrats, Avin, though! Nice podium, and yes you did better than Oz last year
