Peng Xiu - China's next hero
Matthew21rp
i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/Random/ChinaFlag_zps8530e475.jpg

Hello everyone, my name is Peng Xiu a young 17 year old climber from China and my dream is to one day become the first Asian to win Liege-Bastogne-Liege. Growing up in a flat town on the outskirts of Beijing you wouldn’t think I could become good climber. That is completely wrong though. I lived at the bottom of a small hill for my entire childhood and my afternoons would consist of cycling home from school and then sprinting up this small hill as many times as I could. It wasn’t very scientific but it worked. When I was 14 I competed in my first ever race, a small race on pan flat roads around the little village I lived in. Being on pan flat roads meant my legs couldn’t cope with the high paces and after only about a Kilometre I was dropped. I was heartbroken as I really thought I had a chance after putting in hours of training up my small climb. After that race I started to cycle as a hobby just for the fun of it rather than training to try and win races (not that I wasn’t having fun before).

On my 16th birthday my parents gave me some plane tickets to Belgium and £5000. They told me they had found a good college in Belgium for me to go to and that I could pursue my dream of becoming a scientist. After a few weeks in Belgium I decided to enter a cycle race. It was called the Liege-Bastogne-Liege Challenge. Little did I know that we were going along the course for one of the toughest races on the planet. I found the race very hard and my lack of experience meant I struggled but at the end, one of the race organisers told me I had completed the Cote de la Redoute (the hardest climb of the race) as quickly as most of the pros in the real race. Suddenly I realised I was a good cyclist and I could do well. My dream had changed I wanted to win the real Liege-Bastogne-Liege.

Peng Xiu - Intro Part 2

After the fantastic result at the LBL challenge I decided I should join a club in Belgium so I could train better and hopefully improve more. It worked very well and soon I was winning lots of local races. My coach told me I had to race in other parts of the country to get noticed. So I packed a suitcase and went travelling around Belgium and into France, looking for races during my summer holidays. Suddenly I seemed to be getting attention from continental and even some pro continental teams from around Europe. I rung my dad to tell him to good news but he wasn’t too happy about me pursuing such a far off dream. I realised I wasn’t just going to prove to big teams I was good enough I was going to have to prove it to my dad. I started to look at some of the contract offers for 2013 and I decided I should ride in the continental division so I could win races. But which team? I had 3 offers which looked good.

La Pomme Marseille – 3 years – 2,500 – Free Element
IG – Sigma Sport – 1 year – 2,500 – Team Mate/ Occasional Free Element
LKT Team Brandenburg – 2 years –2,000 - Leader/Free Element

I liked the look of all 3 offers. La Pomme were going to give me a free role and they are very famous for raising good young talent. Although the contract is very long and I’m not sure I want to stay at a continental team that long. IG – Sigma Sport offered me a short contract so I would be able to move on to bigger things if I wanted to. Although it wouldn’t give me long to prove myself and my role wouldn’t be great. LKT Brandenburg seemed the best option and I was ready to accept their offer when they told me they could no longer offer me a place. I was going to have to make a big decision now, La Pomme or IG – Sigma.

I'd go for IG. I think being domestique should be good for controllng yourself. As a free element, you might attack too much and collapse.

Peng Xiu Intro - Part 3

“And our next rider to introduce is a youngster who has signed for our team this year. Give a warm welcome to IG – Sigma sport’s next big thing Peng Xiu.”

“So Peng what do you hope for from this season?”

“I hope to prove to the world that I have what it takes to ride at the top level of world cycling”

“What are your goals for the season?”

“For most of the season I will race as a team mate or free element, but later in the season at the Tour of China I will have the chance to race for myself. It will be nice to lead the team at my home race”

“You only have a 1 year contract, what are your plans for next year?”

“It’s far too early to say but hopefully either stay here for another year or move up to the Pro Continental division.”

“That’s all we have time for, thank you Peng and I wish you all the best for the coming season”

“Thanks”

Yes I signed for IG-Sigma Sport. It was best because I wouldn’t have liked being stuck in the continental division for 3 years. I can now move to Britain and hopefully start performing well.

Goodbye for now

Peng Xiu

0.7 development is going to be very fast. But it makes a solid change and could be quite fun to watch.
Best of luck with IGS, not my favorite team or one i would have picked for Xiu but i'll try and follow along

I normally wouldn't pick IGS but it fitted along with the direction I want the story to go Smile

The Team

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/Squads/IG-Sigma2014_zps308bbd8d.jpg

This is the IG – Sigma Sport squad for 2013. The teams best riders are Ross Edgar and Matt Cronshaw who are both sprinters. This should give me a chance to lead the team in hilly stages once I have progressed a bit.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/Peng/Start2014_zps042c38cc.jpg

Here is me and my predicted abilities. As you can see I am very small and light which means I have a good climbing ability. I also have good acceleration which should help me with attacking towards the end of races.

My Season

My plan for the season involves being in fairly good shape most of the season but peaking around September. The reason for this plan is so I can assist my team as a domestique whenever required and then peak for the Tour of China which I have been told I can lead the team in. it is nice to be leading the team in my home race and I hope I can get some good results there as well as helping the team get good results at other races.

Totally love the team. Not very strong, so it will be interesting Smile
Good luck, I really hope it goes well because it looks great Wink

Looking nice, and good to be in a team with a few Irishmen. Smile (Though Mullen's TT is severly underrated Angry)

Thinking about it, why is Mullen there? Aren't you playing in 2014? Shouldn't he be at An Post then?
