Scouting Update

The team would like to announce two more signings that have happened. Robin Eckmann a 21 year old German rider from Baden-Württemberg has signed on which should give us another very good climber to replace Alfredo Balloni who will be leaving next season.

Robin also gave the team a mention of Pascal Hildebrant a couple of months ago and we have been monitoring him. His recent 4th place finish in the GC for the Tour de France U23 only confirmed what Robin was saying about how good this kid was. So immediately following the TdFU23 we talked to Hildebrant and signed him adding the 20 year old to our roster.

We are also very likely to sign two Austrian riders to complete our roster for next season, but are a bit lost on which of the four very good riders the country has put on display. Here is an overview of the riders: Oliver Schartner is currently ranked 2nd in the world behind Kazan, and is almost certainly going to be signed. Beyond that here are the other 3.

All four riders went to the Vuelta a Castilla y León U23 race, and the team dominated finishing 1st (Schartner), 2nd (Riedl), 6th (Berger), and 12th (Dorfmeister). We are mixed and currently think this might come down to the best style of rider for our team. We will have Craddock and Eckmann for the stage races next season. Mannion and Pizzaballa to support them on the climbs. Schartner and Hildebrant would give us two punchers and we are strongly considering a 3rd to round out that part of our squad. Also as a reminder we have signed Derrick Baker as a sprinter.

Tour Alsace

Beaucourt – Colmar: 160.3 kms - Flat


Stage three is mostly flat, with some small hills in the first half of the stage, the long gradual decent down to Colmar for the finish should make for a certain mass sprint, though Bontrager will try to avoid that fate.

With an incredibly early KoM only 3.2km into the race, Stuyven would attack early and would be let free to get his points before being reeled back by the peloton.

Gavin Mannion would take up the spot in the BOTD for Bontrager, as the breakaway wheeled through all of the remaining KoM and Sprint points. No one really made an effort, but Mannion led all the riders through the points just in case.

The final mass sprint would see the power Sojasun brought as they would get a double with Galland leading Lemoine. This move might be costly later though as race lead Lemoine did not get the full time bonus for crossing the line first.

Tour Alsace

Bolwiller – Markstein: 84.6 kms - Mountains


The 4th stage of the Tour Alsace, finally gets the team into the mountains, our specialty. A big mountain top finish awaits us, and the first half of the race is spent with the riders staring the climb in the face.

The only KoM aside from the mountaintop finish would be fairly late in the stage, and the breakaway would have to work hard to get there before the peloton tried to close it down and start the climb. Jasper would have to attack the breakaway late in order to stay out far enough in front to win this sprint.

With the climb and the race now officially started, the attacks came starting with Robigzon Oyola (EPM). A few too many would find his wheel though and he couldn't quite get away to make anything of his effort. A 19th place finish awaited him.

Another stronger attack later by Luis Alberto Romero (Jamis) would end up only getting one rider on his wheel Vergílio Santos (Rádio Popular) and the two would be able to get up to the top and finish in the first group.

Alfredo Balloni would set up his attack, needing to bridge to Santos and Ramero and ideally get over the top of them for a stage win. Adding a few seconds ahead of Cyril Lemoine (Sojasun) would also be needed to takeover the race lead.

Balloni's attack wins him the stage, though Santos and Romero were just barely able to catch on, and were never able to threaten going by him. Race Leader Cyril Lemoine would finish 5th, and hold onto his lead by 9 seconds over Balloni and Santos.

A Bulgarian, Moldovan, and Tunisian in the top 5! I'm liking adding the other countries into the U23 races.

EDIT: That Tunisian is only 18 and has been good several times! Thinking I may take a look and see if we can add another sprinter!

The mostly flat stage 5 ITT isn't long enough for large gaps but a few seconds could be gained or lost.

The final stage, there are several climbs and grades up to 13% for the riders to deal with. Enough KoM points to change that points race, and of course the GC is still very in the air as well.

Jasper Stuyven would have to join the breakaway as 2nd place in the KoM, Joaquim Durant (Ventilair) was involved, the two would fight for the points alone attacking the other 7 in the breakaway for the points. Stuyven was able to get enough to maintain his lead and win the KoM.

An unfortunate puncture just before the last climb would take away one of the main helpers for Balloni as Gavin Mannion was forced to try and catch back onto a fast moving peloton. This could cost the team dearly.

With Mannion gone, and the other helpers already worn out, Balloni would have to do the work on his own to keep with the leaders. This just wasn't his day and not only would he lose a chance at the GC, but also he would lose his Best Young Rider position as well.

Daan Olivier (RB3) would win the sprint at the top with the other 4 that got away. Lemoine (Sojasun) would take 2nd, and hold his overall lead. Santos and Romero would both jump Balloni to get onto the podium and Olivier with his win would pass Balloni for best Young Rider.

Scouting Report

Okay not so much a scouting report as a Welcome to the Team message! Our four young riders have joined the team! We introduce:

Derrick Baker: 19y, Sprinter, USA
Dominic Berger: 19y, Tours, Austria
Pascal Hildebrandt: 20y, Puncher, Germany (Baden-Württemberg)
Oliver Schartner: 19y, Puncher, Austria

All four riders will be making their first professional appearance in the Tour of China, starting September 7th!

We do continue our search for new riders, with our scouts currently combing back through the USA and looking in Tunisia. Please help suggest where to look, next season the U23 races will start early as I know there is an Oz tour!

So I finished adding in the U23 races, I'm hoping they all set up properly and work when next season rolls around. Though now that I have the files done, recreating them isn't much of an issue.

In total I added 38 new U23 races. All 5 monuments are now included as with the 3 Grand Tours and much more.

Instead of U23 giro de Italia, you could add the Giro Bio or Picolo Giro, i dont know te exact name, but that one is like the italian l'Avenir.

About scouting, you said colombians didnt show as strong as you wanted, but you could also look at other teams, that Beltrán from EPM UNE is looking good in the youngsters classification
