Bontrager U23 - (Closed)
Kentaurus
Amgen Tour of California
May 14th, 2013
San Francisco – Santa Cruz County: 188.9 kms - Hilly

After a tragic first day, the second day was much awaited. The team would see some changes, as Lawson Craddock would become team leader, as Balloni fell to over 4 minutes back after the crash. Balloni would be assigned to protecting him.

The 2nd stage is relatively flat as the route travels down the coast, but then a turn inland quickly go uphill. Staying with the peloton will be the main objective for Craddock and Mannion will try to continue building on his KoM lead.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/2s1.jpg

The four man breakaway including Mannion in the polka dot jersey, also has Gabe Varela (Jamis), Joey Rosskopf (Hincapie), and Jesse Anthony (Optum). The foursome will be sad to see the coastline go behind them as they turn inland towards the hills.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/2s2.jpg

Over the first of the climbs Gavin shows his strength and will add to his lead in the KoM. The three riders aren't very happy about the pace Mannion set as they are not the same caliber of climbers.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/2s3.jpg

With a plan in action, Mannion isn't able to contest the 2nd KoM point as he is set to keep as much in the tank for an oncoming Lawson Craddock. The team fearing it may not be strong enough to stay with the peloton attacks early and tries to get Craddock free with help up the road. The hookup works and Craddock draws out a lead!
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/2s4.jpg

With the finishing line in sight as he approaches the 1km to go banner it's going to be close! Craddock has the lead, but the contenders are chasing hard, will someone be fast enough to close down the gap and sprint by?!
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/2s5.jpg

Peter Sagan was certainly up to the task taking his 2nd win and adding some bonus seconds to his lead. Lawson would be overtaken by many riders on the final sprint, but would not lose any time to the leaders.

I Agree with Miguel98, scouts arent as accurrate as we want... I scouted for my history a colombian like this and doesnt really looks like a future star, in the other hand, I sign the best colombian in the U23 calendar and he certanly will be a classic rider to be afraid of... Good luck

Colombians aren't exactly dominating the U23 circuit right now... 35th in GP Portugal, 156th in Ronde van Vlaanderen Espoirs, 175th in La Côte Picarde, 174th in ZLM Tour, 47th in Giro della Regioni, 133rd in L-B-L Espoirs, 11th in Tour de Berlin by Riofrío.

That 11th place is really their only decent finish. Now in fairness most of these haven't been climbs which is certainly the strong point of Colombia. The Ronde de l'Isard is coming up in a week with 3 hilly stages and 1 mountain stage. We will see how they do there.

May 15th, 2013
San José – Livermore: 185.3 kms - Flat

The 3rd day of this race would see an interesting route, that could favor the sprinters, but likely will favor an attack or group that attacks on the final climb, with only 15km left after the summit, and all downhill, the climbers could find a chance to gain time and a win.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/3s1.jpg

With Mannion again in the break, a chance to secure a huge lead in the mountains presents itself. He would have little problem winning both the first and second KoM points.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/3s2.jpg

The third KoM would be hotly contested, though not for the points but because several of the contenders had their sights set on a win. The BOTD gets eaten up by a group of attackers including Rodríguez, Horner, and Kessiakoff.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/3s3.jpg

With the first set of attacks settled and Cannondale back in charge of the lead group, Bauke Mollema sets the next attack rushing off on his own. He will have to hold them at bay for just over 5km if he wants the win.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/3s4.jpg

The gamble pays off, as Mollema takes the stage win finishing ahead of the group and earning a bit of redemption for what has otherwise been a poor showing for the Blanco Pro Cycling rider who is over 6 minutes back.

Amgen Tour of California
May 16th, 2013
Sonora – Clovis: 208.5 kms - Flat

Another day in beautiful California for the team, happy to be riding close to home. Well most of the riders that is... Alfredo Balloni isn't close to home and isn't very happy about no longer being the team leader. We are hoping that we can finish this tour without incident and the two captains Craddock and Balloni go back to leading separate teams.

The Tour of California continues to give some hilly terrain, though the long decent to the finish should give the sprinters a chance to get involved. With Craddock losing several minutes on yesterday's stage, expect another attack from him to try and gain back that time.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/4s1.jpg

Mannion once again controls the KoM points, and has built a commanding lead in the category. With many climbs and some of the biggest climbs remaining no lead is safe.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/4s2.jpg

Lawson makes the predictable attack just over the top of the last KoM, the long decent allows him to pull out over 4 minutes of a gap and of course Mannion does his best once Craddock caught the breakaway.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/4s4.jpg

Sagan and the Cannondale team though were not excited to let the Bontrager rider back into the mix of the GC, and after losing yesterday Sagan wanted to put the race back into it's proper place. Taking his 3rd win of the tour.

Amgen Tour of California
May 17th, 2013
Bakersfield (ITT): 30.3 kms - Flat

A time-trial has the potential to completely shake up the top of the GC, and at 30km it is long enough for several seconds to be gained or lost. Riders will have to push hard, but better leave a little left for an uphill finish.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/5s1.jpg

Connor O'Leary would be one of the first to depart, and would set a time that would have over a minute on the field for much of the day. However as the better riders came, his time would fall down to 54th and 5th on Bontrager alone.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/5s2.jpg

The first rider to really shatter things and push O'Leary off the top spot would be the old veteran Andreas Klöden (RadioShack). His time would stand again for a while and he would finish 6th overall.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/5s4.jpg

The winner would be no surprise as Taylor Phinney (BMC) dominated the course. Alfreado Balloni is no slouch in a time-trial and finished 16th today, but would be passed on the road by Phinney. Also an amazing ride by Fredrik Kessiakoff (Astana) though 48 seconds behind Phinney on the day would put him 19 seconds up in the GC ahead of Ramunas Navardauskas (Garmin).

Palmdale – Big Bear Lake: 185 kms - Hilly

Another stage where the finish could change the picture of the GC is the hilly climb to the summit at Big Bear Lake. Though with the Mt. Baldy climb following tomorrow, there is a chance that the contenders will wait until then. A flat last 10k will make gaining time difficult.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/6s1.jpg

Gavin Mannion would again set out to defend his KoM lead in the breakaway, and would face new challengers, though they would be treated just as the last, following Gavin to the top.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/6S2.jpg

The attacks would come hard and fast as the finish neared. Only a small group remained with the leaders, and the stars would take off. First an attempt by Rodríguez to get ahead, then this attack by Andy Schleck would put the group under duress.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/6s3.jpg

With Andy brought back the next attack would come from Lawson Craddock as he attempts to get a win. With 5km to go and the peloton behind him he would have the last attack before the race would turn to a sprint and an likely victory from Sagan.

Craddock WINS! Lawson holds off the field, though narrowly as Klöden almost sprinted by and the field only moments behind him. Even though no time was really gained this win should go a long way towards Bontragers future.

Ontario – Mt. Baldy: 116.1 kms - Mountains

There is only one stage remaining after the finish up Mt. Baldy and it is now or never for the climbers like Schleck, Rodríguez, Klöden and Horner. There are two climbs on the day, the first early climb probably the more difficult, but the 2nd climb and then the steep uphill finish will be where the attacks happen.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/7s1.jpg

Mannion would get the day off of being in the breakaway, and instead would spend most of the time protecting Lawson Craddock. Balloni would get a chance in the break as the team hopes this will ease some of the tension. Like Mannion though Balloni would be leading the BOTD through the KoM sprints.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/7s2.jpg

With most of the race done, and the BOTD still out in front, the climbers make their move and form an attack in front of the peloton. Andy Schleck leads them out with Horner, Rodríguez, and race leader Fredrik Kessiakoff right behind.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/7s3.jpg

The BOTD has been caught, but Alfredo Balloni had dropped the other riders awhile ago, and has been on his own for some time. Under the flamme rouge he still holds the lead but Purito is closing in behind him.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/7s4.jpg

Despite a tremendous effort from Balloni, Joaquím Rodríguez would be just good enough and able to sprint by Alfredo at the last moment. Bontrager was just a couple seconds away from getting a great back-to-back from Craddock and Balloni, but the tremendous burst from the Spaniard steals the win.

Beverly Hills – Los Angeles: 74.3 kms - Flat

The final stage rides into downtown Los Angeles and a circuit of 7 laps before the finish. A mass sprint here is all but assured.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/8s1.jpg

An early breakaway stands little chance, but should be cheered well if they can enter the circuit ahead of the peloton. Nathan Brown leads the way for Bontrager.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/8s2.jpg

The sprint trains form with Cannondale leading out for Peter Sagan, and BMC for Taylor Phinney. Our own Caleb Ewan finds a way to grab Phinney's wheel.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BLS/2013/AToC/8s3.jpg

In the end though it is again Sagan crossing the line first, taking his 4th win in the 8 stages, not quite the performance he had last year, but still very impressive. Fredrik Kessiakoff holds on to win the overall classification.
