Yea, even more so Sergei Belorusov looks incredible (won every stage of the Giro Della Regioni). But I won't be able to get my scouts over to Russia anytime soon.

Giro della Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia

Trieste â€“ Gorizia: 147.5 kms - Flat

Alfredo Balloni and Gabriel Pizzaballa get to return to Italy in one of two races added to the calendar just for them. (Giro della Valle d'Aosta being the other). Alfredo Balloni will be leading the team once again as they get their final race before the biggest event of the season for Bontrager. The first stage is mostly flat with some climbs early, and one small climb late. Balloni has already targeted that climb as a chance for a win, an approach he is becoming something of a specialist at.

Jasper Stuyven got started on the front of the peloton and took off at the gun to get a shot for those two KoM sprints. Getting over the first, a category 3, would be no problem for the Belgian.

The second climb though, a long category 2, would be more challenging, and though he had a good bit of separation from the field, a little extra motivation certainly helped to get up to the top.

Much later in the stage, Jasper long since moved back into the field, the small climb came, and Alfredo attacked. The peloton was already moving fast, ready for the final sprint only 10km away, but the attack was so strong that no one would be able to follow. Now he only needs to hold on the last few kilometers.

Balloni's move pays off in a big win, and he is excited to get a win in his home Italy. The separation will hopefully be enough that he can hold onto for the next 5 days, though Vini Fantini - Selle Italia sent a very strong team headlined by Oscar Gatto.

Tour of the Gila

May 2nd, 2013

Mogollon Road Race: 150.3 kms - Hilly

The Tour of the Gila is the last race for many of the Bontrager riders before the Amgen Tour of California. So much like their teammates in Italy the riders here led by Lawson Craddock will be finishing up their preparations.

The first stage drops down into a valley before the riders climb back out to the finish line. A very steep last kilometer will make this a challenge and the best climbers will win. Luckily both Craddock and Mannion enter this stage as significant favorites.

Caleb Ewan gets off the front early and spends a good part of the day in front of the field before getting caught on the later climbs, however he wins both sprint points without a challenge.

A small group of four send out an attack up the last climb they catch and drop Ewan with little problem, but can they hold off the charging peloton?

Craddock would cruise past the very tired group of four along with some of the other contenders behind him on his way to a dominating victory and over a minute of time between him and McCarty (Bissell).

I'm thinking about that, but I'm also about to get hammered back down hard in the Amgen Tour of California, and in flat races my team is horrible. I don't mind winning consistently if I have the best rider and certainly in Gila, Craddock is the best rider, and Balloni is considered a 3 or 2 star favorite in the races he is in.

I'll proabably go through to the American Cycle Classic (then I have like a month of the season off) and I'll decide if it is time to go to extreme.

And in the Liege Espoirs, there was only 30 seconds separating 1st and 200th...

The U23 version of the race is considered flat, so simulation will end it in a mass sprint. Perhaps something for the DB people to fix?

Our second day in Italy, and another flat stage with a late summit, however this one would be still too far from the finish for Balloni to try any attack and the other teams will be watching the leaders jersey too much for it to happen again anyway.

Jasper Stuyven wants the few mountain points on the course, and would join the BOTD to get there before the field.

With the Cat3 climb and six KoM points available for the first to reach the top Jasper would put in a great attack actually creating some separation from his peers, Daniel Rinner (Vorarlberg) and Bert Van Lerberghe (Ventilair).

The final sprint though would be up to the peloton and easy favorites Vini Fantini, and their sprinter Rafael de Mattos Andriato would win the mass sprint, though Balloni would put of a very good showing as he smartly got on the wheel of Andriato and let him do all the work.

Tour of the Gila

Inner Loop Road Race: 126.9 kms - Flat

The second stage of the Gila is supposedly flat, though an uphill sprint finish and some very undulating terrain makes the race feel more like it could favor the climbers.

Gavin Mannion, who is wearing the KoM jersey for Craddock, takes off early to get the first KoM before anyone can reach him. There would be no challengers for the points, but the other teams wouldn't let the 3rd place rider stay out front for too long.

After the second sprint point, a long gradual decent would see a 2 man breakaway with Nathan Brown tagging along. Neither rider poses any threat to the GC at this point so the other teams let them get a little bit of a lead.

It would be too late for the field as they forget how good Brown is at time-trialing after he leaves his partner with 35k left to go. He would be able to solo his way to a victory, leaving the sprinters to decide 2nd place.

The mass sprint would follow very shortly behind Nathan as Jake Keough (UCH) would lead the way for the sprinters. Craddock wouldn't hurt himself any with a 5th place finish as he did his best to stay on the wheel of Keough.

Maniago â€“ Pontebba Passo Pramollo: 133.7 kms - Mountains

A long steep climb is the culmination of the 3rd stage in Italy. Balloni already in the race lead is the favorite for this stage as he is as good of climber as any in the field, and has a terrific team helping him, primarily Gabriele Pizzaballa.

Early though KoM leader Jasper Stuyven would like to ensure he can get the points for the category two climb just around halfway through the stage. He would get himself into the break which also keeps the pressure off of the other BCT riders. Jasper would take the KoM with no challenger as none of the other riders was concerned about the points.

The first move up to get up to the mountain top finish would come from Jonathan Monsalve (Vini Fantini) and the Bontrager boys would form at the front of the peloton to keep him from getting too far away. Nathan Wilson would do a tremendous job leading everyone up the climb.

With Monsalve in sights Balloni and Pizzaballa separate from the peloton, joining Monsalve ahead. The two would then give Monsalve a problem as he couldn't counter them both. Balloni would make the decisive move getting a gap and riding away.

The win marks a second for Balloni in his home Italy, and increases his lead over 2nd place, now teammate and close friend Gabriele Pizzaballa. Monsalve would finish 3rd and round out the top 3 of the GC.

Well it helps that both groups right now are all sitting at 95 or better form, and the competition isn't near as strong as it was earlier in the season. Both Craddock and Balloni are the best riders in their respective races, and Mannion/Pizzaballa are around 3rd or 4th best, so the team is stronger than all the others also.
