Scouting Update

We have moved on from our following of Zack Simpson, but have started looking at 21 year old Jose Dixon (USA). We believe we he may have a promising future as a puncher.

We continue to scout Derrick Baker as a sprinter, our scout thinks currently he would be around a 67/67 sprinter which has us considering sending him an offer, and already we are sponsoring him.

Also we are considering signing Dylan Groenewegen (NED) if Cyclingteam De Rijke - Shanks does not renew his contract before July.

Ewan did some great racing there. Where the team was chanceless in the main competitions, he got the team noticed by extreme aggressiveness!

Get ready for round 2 of that... I don't think our chances in Oman are any better. Still not exactly sure how I got in those races, may opt out next season and instead do Valley of the Sun.

Tour of Oman
February 15th, 2013
Al Musannah – Sultan Qaboos University: 158.6 kms - Flat


Welcome to the Tour of Oman, much like the Tour of Qatar, the team holds no real expectations. Getting into the breaks, some time out front is the best we can really hope for. Maybe a chance at getting some mountain points in the breaks, but that would mean not sending Ewan out front.

Today though with only a cat4 climb Ewan would get to go, and as expected over the short climb he comes up last out of the break. Ghyllebert (AnPost) takes the quartet over the top.

The first of the two sprints would be a bit uphill, a challenge Ewan was ready for, taking a later jump around Ghyllebert, and getting by everyone.

The 2nd sprint comes just off of the downhill run and again Ewan gets by his competition.

The final sprint would be taken by the young and very talented Peter Sagan (Cannondale). Edvald Boasson Hagan (Sky) and Tom Boonen (Omega Pharma) would round out the top 3.

Tour of Oman

Fanjah – Al Bustan: 151.8 kms - Flat


The race would see much of the same, with Ewan out front, unfortunately losing on the sprints to Canadian David Veilleux (Europcar). In the finish Dries Devenyns (Omega Pharma) made an attack over the cat3 just before the finish, and would be able to hold off the field on the decent. L.L. Sánchez and Marco Pinotti would also get over the hill before the sprinters, but Sagan and EBH would be able to close down the gap enough not to lose time.

Ewan again gets into the breakaway, and contests both sprint points for the day, coming in 2nd both times. First to Wouter Mol (Vacansoleil) then to Daniel Teklehaimanot (Orica).

The single KoM sprint would take place at the summit of a cat3 climb, short and steep. Ewan wouldn't contest these points as Wouter Mol would easily take full advantage.

The final sprint would take place between the big names, as Boonen would beat EBH and Sagan to the line. Ewan would not finish with the lead group, and would lose his white jersey which he was borrowing from Sagan.

Ewan would set out again for the intermediate sprints with the breakaway, and would again come in 2nd for the first sprint, behind James Vanlandschoot (Accent).

The second sprint point would not be for the breakaway, as the main field had already caught up, but anyone who wanted the sprint points would likely not be able to make it up the looming climb with the major contenders. Sebastian Langeveld (Orica) would go for it, and take the 6 points.

The final climb would be the first mountaintop finish of the season for BCT, and Gavin Mannion would hold on with the lead group. Dries Devenyns (Omega Pharma) would win the stage, and will trade out his KoM jersey for the Leader's jersey tomorrow.

Our breakaway today would see riders that are really good, and Ewan. Caleb would have no challengers for the sprint, the other, Dario Cataldo (Sky), Cyril Lemoine (Sojasun), Damiano Caruso (Cannondale), and Sébastien Turgot (Europcar) have more important things on their minds.

Over the steep climbs though in this "hilly" stage the main 4 would leave Caleb behind, the young Aussie unable to match their acceleration on the steeps.

L.L. Sánchez (Blanco) would be the rider that made a move from the peloton to catch the break leaders Dario Cataldo and Cyril Lemoine.

Dario Cataldo would shortly leave his two companions, and race ahead for the victory. The catch would work in Luis León Sánchez's favor though as even with his 3rd place, he would take the overall lead by more than a minute with only flat stage to go.

The final stage would see Gavin Mannion take the break for BCT, and amongst his breakaway teammates, no one seemed to want the first sprint points. so Gavin obliged and took them with ease.

The lone mountain points on the stage would be contested however and Wouter Mol (Vacansoleil) would add to his points, finishing 3rd in the category overall.

Late in the race, Mannion who had continued to elude the peloton even after the break was caught would push on his charge for the finish.

Despite Mannions efforts some of the big names would catch him and push on, and Sylvain Chavanel (Omega Pharma) would finish the Tour of Oman with a win. L.L. Sánchez would finish 5th just in front of Mannion and hold onto his overall lead.

Tour of Oman
February 15th-20th, 2013


The Tour of Oman, much like Qatar was just a "show" race for BCT, winning was never really of concern though certainly is always liked. Getting the sponsors time in the breakaway, and getting the riders used to the speed and professionalism of a peloton with many veteran riders, big teams, and big names. Caleb Ewan continued to perform fantastically for the team, spending most of the last two weeks in breakaways and surviving the heat. Gavin Mannion really came on strong in the last three days of Oman and looks to be strong for the future.

I'm sure the awe of being in a major race, this pair of 2.hc category races will be gone until the Tour of California, but for many getting back to racing against riders more evenly skilled in the .2 races will be more pleasant.

Trofeo Zssdi would serve as the first race for our two Italians who will be leading the team in some of the bigger races, and as a hill finish would be suited for their strengths.

The team not quite sure how to use the Italians just yet, decided to put Gabriele Pizzaballa into the breakaway which swelled up to a large group.

Pizzaballa would use this break and be the best of the bunch for a decent finish, but Miguel Rubiano shot out of the peloton and right by the breakaway for an easy win.

Porec – Porec: 152.4 kms - Flat, Cobbles


In getting back to .2 races, BCT will start with a few races in Croatia. The first Trofej Porec, is fairly flat but includes some cobbles. Bontrager will be relying on Jasper Stuyven and Andzs Flaksis for anything on these stones.

The start of the race has a very different tactic for Bontrager, as the team expects to be very competitive against the field with Stuyven or Flaksis. Instead of trying to get in the break, they would be trying to control the race.

The BOTD would have 4 riders, a great number for the peloton and BCT to keep on a close leash. James Oram and Alexandre Darville would rotate at the front to keep the peloton moving and the gap reasonable.

After two very short sets of cobbles early, BCT would work to make everyone hurt over the larger stretches in the race. While working to set some tempo, Darville also led the team over the cobbles, picking up his pace. The team would replace him as a tempo rider after this push so he was able to put everything into punishing the field.

The 2nd major cobbled section comes with about 1/3rd of the race remaining (55km). And Andzs Flaksis would put the rest of the peloton to the test as he attacks forcing the other teams to work and catch him. During this attack he would catch the BOTD and sit in.

With Andzs up ahead, the work would fall to Joker Merida to get their leader back up to the break preferrably before the cobbles where Andzs would certainly make a move away form the BOTD and be gone for an easy win.
The Joker team lead by Reidar Borgersen would catch the break, but were probably a bit tired after riding hard for the catch, and Jasper Stuyven would take advantage with the cobbles coming up. Andsz would try and stick to his wheel, but the legs wouldn't take another attack over the cobbles.

The peloton saw Jasper start the cobbles, but they wouldn't see him again until after the finish line. The team finished how they hoped, and Jasper made a very strong showing to dominate over the cobbles and stay away for the last 10km after the cobbles.
