Cheshire Cycling Tour
Stage 2 brings a very different kind of stage, the first 140 are pretty uninteresting with the highlight being 2 sprint points but the last 35k feature a steady stream of small climbs (one Cat 3 rated), cobbles and even one stretch of gravel. It is here the stage will be decided
The stage favorites are the cobblers:
By the time the break reaches the first sprint point at the top of Beeston Brow there are 9 riders together although on the climb Fretin ditches all his compatriots to easily take first. The other 8 are La Grenade (3rd at the sprint), Singh (Y.O., only a single Singh in this race), Fratczak, van der Tuuk, Gautherat, Meiler (2nd at the sprint), Menshov, and Haugard. There are another three riders trying to bridge up this group.
The 12 escapees come together with 148k to go and a lead of 3’53 over the Minions-led peloton. The 3 additions are Hopkins, Ben Ameur, and Gonov. Three more riders are 1’11 down and look likely to reach the front, they are: Pluimers, Moricz, and Lampawog.
The last 3 join up with 139k to go and a lead of 4’15. 4 in the break for MOL.
Meileir easily wins the sprint at the top of the 2nd ascent of Beeston Brow. Gautherat and Moricz are 2nd and 3rd. About 85k of flat from here until it gets interesting with 35k to go.
As the peloton hits Beeston Brow for the third time (no sprint point this time), Zepuntke and Gerts attack. Break is at 2’21 and is fractured at the moment following the climb.
Aker take accountability for the chase but they aren’t going that hard as with 65k to go Louvel and Van Hooydonck attack. The 7 breakaway survivors at the front have 2’52, Zepuntke and Gerts (who were joined by Jacobs) have 52 seconds and the remainder of the original break are spread out in between. The 7 at the front are Lampawog, Moricz, Meilier, La Grenade, Singh, Pluimers, and Fretin. Still 3 MOL riders here so they have some riders who will sacrifice themselves.
Louvel and Van Hooydonck are quickly brought back with Grieg and BMF contributing.
The 6 leaders (Singh having been dropped) reach the Kettleshulme climb (Cat 3, 4.1k at 4.4%) with a lead of 2’35 over the peloton where Minions continue to be the most active team in the chase. The group with the counter-attackers is is just 24 seconds in front of the peloton. The climb includes a 700 meter 4-star cobbled section, this is where the real race begins.
1.9k to climb and Moricz begins to distance his companions. His last domestique, Fretin was dropped early in the climb. Behind the peloton has caught the other group.
Raccagni and Lapeira on the front as the peloton hits the cobbled section of the climb. 179 riders left, Moricz is 2’29 ahead.
Moricz takes the KOM points ahead of Lampawog and Meilier. Abrahamsen will keep that jersey another day.
Dversnes leads the peloton over the top. Group down to 63. Two of the attackers, Zepuntke and Jacobs are the biggest names in trouble.
Van der Poel attacks with 24k to go. The peloton down to 36 although it is pretty fluid right now. Spengler, Anderberg, And Benoot all badly placed.
On the Kishfield Lane cobbles, which is the longest and hardest section of the race, Van der Poel’s lead hovers at around 25 seconds. Girmay, Lecourt De Billot and Gaze some of the riders near the front. Benoot has recovered nicely and is also at the front and Anderberg and Spengler have also moved up.
Teunissen and Kubis are out the back and trying to recover and Gerts is further back. But the Yellow Jersey of Major still well placed. 22k to go.
On the 1.9k dirt section past the National Trust’s Lyme Park property Van der Poel has a 12 second lead over a 63-rider peloton. The two Gazelle riders made it back, Gerts, Jacobs and Zepuntke have not. 16k to go. Next obstacle is Beeston Brow again, in 6k, but they tackle it in the other direction so mostly downhill.
Van der Poel is caught right at the end of the dirt road section. Menten and Askey go to the front of the peloton.
No action on Beeston Brow, the final cobble section is Rainow – Oakenbank Lane (2.2k, 4 star) 7k to go, the peloton back to 77, Benoot leads the way.
4 riders pull off the front as they finish the cobbles, it is Spengler, Per, Senechal, and Eekhoff. Swift trying to join them.
Swift doesn’t make it but with 4k to go Anderberg tries to jump across. Coming off the cobbles the Yellow Jersey has been dropped.
Anderberg makes the junction, and with 2.5k to go, the leaders have 16 seconds. The chase group being led by Habimana includes 29 riders. There are another 7 including Van der Poel 40 seconds down.
1k banner, Per and Senechal open up the sprint. Chasers are just around the corner, the gap is 16 seconds.
600 meters, Senechal on Per’s wheel, then it is Anderberg, Eekhoff and Spengler. Behind Habimana, Pedersen, Girmay and Ovsyannikov are leading the sprint.
200 meters, Senechal trying to get around Per. Eekhoff dropping back.
Per celebrates. Senechal settles for second,
Anderberg, Spengler and Eekhoff hold on to complete the top 5, although they may have lost the gap. Eekhoff benefitting from all the tips he picked up at McCormick about riding cobbles.
Ovsyannikov, Girmay, Pedersen, Lapeira and Kubis are the top 5 in the sprint behind.
Small gaps are awarded, the front two get 9 seconds and the next two another 9 and the top 10 get 8 seconds on the rest of the first group. Per is the new race leader. Grieg also takes the team lead. Girmay is the points leader and Habimana is the best young rider.
