It’s the final stage of the race and although it’s essentially flat there’s still a chance the GC lead could change a last time because two time stage winner Walls is only 20’’ behind the leader McCormick.
Arashiro went for another day in the break. His only companion today is Woronieski.
The leaders didn’t contest the first intermediate sprint. Groenewegen is the only one in the peloton interested in the points.
It’s roughly the same picture at the second sprint but this time Kamberaj joins the fun and takes 3rd place.
The peloton already closes in at the only KoM sprint, but Arashiro wins it and secures the jersey for his teammate.
But with 42 km to go the peloton catches the Japanese. Magnier is leading at the moment, a task his teammates will do for him here in a couple of years.
With 10 km to go we see the usual trains from Bacharu, UBS, Peugeot and Tryg.
It’s the same picture with 3 km to go.
The last leadouts are still in front with 700 m to go. Peugeot was in the lead recently but Welsford has lost his momentum and the UBS duo on the left seems to be much faster now.
With 300 m to go Groenewegen leads in front of Larsen and Hopkins.
And the Dutch gets his timing right for once! Hopkins is 2nd while Larsen completes the podium.
Walls finishes in 4th which should also be his final GC position. Kalaba, Willems, Coquard, El Sabbahi, Kulikovskiy and Sureda complete the top 10.
Congratulations to Groenewegen!
McCormick is the rather surprising winner of this Tour Down Under!
Petelin wins the KoM classification.
Walls is a deserved points classification winner.
Haverdings stays in the white jersey.
Deutsche WindGuard is awarded the team classification, probably on countback.
