2025 World Championships
Puri, India
Welcome to India and the final act of the 2025 season, after Lopez won the rainbow jersey last year it is time for the sprinters and rolours to fight it out the the honor this year. This year we will race in Puri, a coastal city and a Municipal Corporation in the state of Odisha in eastern India. It is the district headquarters of Puri district and is situated on the Bay of Bengal, 60 kilometres (37 mi) south of the state capital of Bhubaneswar. It is home to the 12th-century Jagannath Temple and is one of the original Char Dham pilgrimage sites for Hindus.
The RR course is seen above, and the TT will also be flat with some speedbumps. Alongside the senior and U23 versions of each, we have the TTT and B RR as in previous years, meaning there are 6 different gold medals to be handed out.
To work out who the favourites are for each race, we've consulted the data analysis department of an unnamed soon-to-be PCT team. The analysis is purely based on looking at numbers on a screen and making a guess, what can go wrong?
With a flat WC this year there is one main favorite in the battle to promote from the B race to the elite race and that is one of the big sprinters of the PCT this year in Peak, his combination of flat and sprint can be decisive. Behind him there is a big field where we have several strong sprinters in the likes of Abdul Halil, Vesely, Liu and Hsu. We shouldn't forget a rider like Siric either who has had a great season and got the skills to do well here
The big question here is if we will get a sprint winner or a late attack from a flat specialist. In general the domestiques are weaker here in the B race which can make the winds hit the peloton hard, or even the sprint with leadouts more chaotic. As en example the best sprinter Peak only has 1 strong leadout rider in Szarka, how will that affect this race?

The TTT has been the domain of the United States for the last 3 seasons and the question is, can the make it 4 in a row? In my opinion no, they can not. They still have a strong team lead by Phinney, but 75 avg TT should not be enough this season.
The biggest favorite this year might be a nation who has never podiumed at the TTT in Belgium. They have a strong and consistent team with an average TT of 77, lead by Evenepoel, Herregodts and Van Moer. A strong squad who could be the one to beat. The biggest challange might come from the team who was favorites last year but failed in France. They might have the most stable squad, but missing the big engine. Still when all but 2 riders are 78 they could ride in gold this year. One of other main competitors might surprisingly be Denmark, even with them missing their best rider. The still have a strong squad lead by Bjerg and an average of 76
Other notable squads include Greece (76), Italy (76) Norway (76), Russia (76) and Switzerland (76). A though field where good form from several riders are needed!

Not a big field in the U23 ITT, but there are 3 clear favorites with maybe 1 big outsider. Milesi, Terada and Vacek are the strongest Time Trialists here and should make up the big fight for the win, while Avenir winner Ayuso should be seen as the big outsider

With the 2 best TTers of the season not present as they are out searching for a new team we can be sure to say we will crown a new TT WC this year, and the main favorite is and should be last years number 2 Dunbar. This could be the year where Ireland finally wins after ending up 2nd twice in the last 3 years (first with Mullen, another big contender this year, then with Dunbar). Another rider who really wants to take the crown this year is Zmorka. He has been 3rd two years in a row after also getting 2nd in 2018. Could this be his year?
Other strong competitors includes Bernal, Kmieliauskas, Ocampo, Bjerg, Ganna, Beniusis and Mano. While we also should forget riders like Evenepoel and Herregodts who can do well here.
All in all a tight field when Würtz and Wirtgen is missing, who is ready to suffer the most and win this?

As with the B race there are one mian favorite here in Lund Andresen. He is the strongest pure sprinter present. Behind him we have a strong field with Bittner, De Lie, Costiou and Christen among others.
Considering the tight level of riders in any U23 race this could be a really exciting race with many potential winners!

Finally, the biggest event of the world championships week - the Elite Road Race. We might of course miss one favorite as we will have a strong sprinter (or attacker) join us from the B race, but with this sprinters field that might not matter! There are 2 big favorites present who finished 1 and 2 back in 2021. That time Gaviria was the best, but considering that his only leadout rider here is Hodeg it could be time for Ewan to take revenge for 2018 and win. He got a much stronger leadout train with Groves (who couldve been one of the favorites himself), Scott and Welsford. While he also has riders like Sweeny and Culey to control the peloton
Behind them Cullaigh is another rider with strong team with Harrison, Yates and Stewart his most important leadouts. Could also be really exciting to see if his teammate Pidcock will try something here? He has the skills to attack and stay away! This could also be the year where Greece and Farantakis steps up to the top of the podium. He has had a great season and got a lot of his normal teammates supporting him, but while the chemistry should be there he lacks the most important parts of his normal train. Another strong sprinter with a good support is Philipsen. Thijssen, Vermeersch, Hesters and Stallaert are a great leadout train and with riders like Evenepoel there he has support for the entire race
The prize for the strongest squad present however has to go the Nederland, they have 3 riders present in Groenewegen, Van Poppel and Jakobsen who all might want to lead, while also having other strong sprinters as leadout. The big question is if the will let the on paper strongest sprinter (Groenewegen) lead or if we will have conflicts here?
Other potential winners include Zabel, Dainese, Halvorsen and maybe even former 3rd place Kragh Andersen, even thought the last one might be a bit far out... However with the winds that could come here in India nothing is impossible and there are also several extremely strong baradours present, could they ruin the sprinter party?

Thank you for a great preview, Heine!
Would be nice to get a medal with one of the U23 riders we have in the TT (or maybe Milan on the road). Also hoping former rider Zmorka can grab gold here, would be a great finish to his 'prime' career.

I guess there's an outside chance that Bini can do something in the RR, which would be cool. A Rwandan in the breakaway would also be nice, or some of our youngsters in the U23 race. Looking forward to the racing, and thanks for the preview, Heine!

Ohh god some start list blunder by the ITA selectors had to give Dainese his best chance of winning and Bonifazio and Minali aren't going to be net positives here was hoping Konychev as last lead out with Ballerini or Milan before and Probably Ganna but this isn't it! |

Hoping for a good showing from Perera in his last maxed race - missing the Ethiopian leadout train but hopefully his good form this season carries over into Sri Lankan colours. Other than that hoping there's finally a rainbow jersey coming to ireland!

Thanks for the fun write-ups. Not expecting much from our guys given the flat route but maybe the crosswinds can make things unpredictable.

Should be some interesting worlds with this new wind dynamic. Curious to see how it affects the racing.
Thanks for this massive preview Heine!

Thanks for the great preview.
Not really got the horses for this parcours but proud that 5 of the 8 US riders are from McCormick and 7 of 8 are current or former McCormick riders.
USA TTT team definitely weaker this year but nice opportunity for McCormick stalwart, Alex Hoehn, to ride in the worlds.

Gutted for Xero legend Novardianto who could have had a career-defining moment there. Still my fave <3
And happy for our pals from Latvia Also cool race, maybe some hope for Pidcock in the Elite RR?

Oh man that's heartbreaking for Novrdianto. It looks like he had shit positioning going into the finale, if he was closer to the front of that group he probably wins it which is tough. Congrats to Latvia on the win.

Nice one for Latvia, good year for them indeed. Malacarne with a top-10 must be the best feat in his career (so far).
Will be interesting to see if the U23 and A race have a similar scenario.
Thank you for the great report, Imladrik!

Interesting way for the race to play out! Should indeed be fun to follow if the sprinters can get their teams to work enough to control the break in the other two road races.
Not much from a Bralirwa perspective in the B Race. Could've been interesting if it had been Teggart instead of Mullen for Ireland in the breakaway, but even that would've been a long shot.
Thank you for the report Imladrik!
