The Race

It’s the final monument of the year and also the traditional PT finale: Il Lombardia. Both the overall podium and the last relegation spot are still contested, so it’s a crucial race today!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0001.jpg

After some fighting nine riders form the last break of the season: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ubs.png Goncalves, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Oldani, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Ulloa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Davies, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Harper, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Piccolo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/jur.png Tiberi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Ulysbayev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/dna.png Camrda. It’s unlikely they’ll be able to actually fight for the win here though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0002.jpg

The first set of climbs is done and the lead is at 6’34. Now the flat part of the day lays ahead of the riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0003.jpg

With 92 km to go the break has only 2’14 to the peloton. From now on there are three major climbs and two short kickers on the menu. The first one is the Colle Gallo (5.7 km at 7.1 %).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0004.jpg

No attacks yet, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Davies has been dropped from the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0005.jpg

The Passo di Ganda (8.4 km at 7.0 %) is the biggest climb of the day. The peloton can already see the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0006.jpg

The Puma led peloton brings back the break halfway through the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant tries his luck with a very long-range attack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0008.jpg

What might have seemed like the usual suicide attack could actually be as master stroke and the decisive move of the day! The Belgian was joined by the major favourites including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/evo.png Lopez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Herklotz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kng.png Gidich, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Bagioli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Areruya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Mohoric and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Formolo and in the descent they have a lead of a minute to a 17 rider chasing group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0009.jpg

One of the kickers (Bracce; 1.6 km at 9.4 %) is situated in the descent. The chasers have nearly made it back there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0010.jpg

There were immediate counter attacks, but only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kng.png Gidich and once again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant get a gap over the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0011.jpg

But they are brought back just in time for the last major climb of the day (Forcella di Berbenno; 8.8 km at 4.6 %).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0012.jpg

With 32 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Olivier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png McCarthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Formolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Gregaard are the last domestiques remaining in the group of favourites. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ubs.png Buchmann is the only leader not in this group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Areruya attacks! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png De Plus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kng.png Gidich, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Herklotz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/evo.png Lopez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Pogacar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Latour can follow him, but the gap is still small.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0014.jpg

They are brought back, but now all domestiques are burned and the captains have to do it on their own. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Herklotz immediately tries to take advantage by an attack over the top!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0015.jpg

His gap extends to 51’’ with 12 km to go, but he still has some of the strongest riders in the world chasing him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0016.jpg

The gap is up to 1’09 when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Herklotz is in the final climb of the day (Begramo Alta; 1.3 km at 9.0 %).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0017.jpg

The chasers get back some seconds in the climb. The group still consists of 16 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0018.jpg

With 2.3 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Herklotz is cruising to his second Lombardia win as he still has 42’’ to his chasers. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Higuita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Carthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Champoussin and most surprisingly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/evo.png Lopez have been dropped from the chasers over the top!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Herklotz takes a commanding win!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0020.jpg

With 500 m to go the sprint of the chasers isn’t on yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Valter was the first to accelerate and he leads the sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Areruya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/gzl.png Aleotti with 300 m to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0022.jpg

And the Hungarian takes 2nd in the end. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Areruya beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant for 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/gzl.png Aleotti comes in a crucial 5th in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Bagioli. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Sivakov just beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Pogacar for 7th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Kinoshita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Mohoric complete the top 10.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Latour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kng.png Gidich and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/jur.png Schmid finish in 11th to 13th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/evo.png Lopez comes in a disappointing 14th with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Champoussin in 15th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Lombardia/PCM0025.jpg

Congratulations to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Herklotz for what could well be his last win in the usual colours!
