Another year, another period of agonising over rider development choices. We once again consulted our research department, only to find they had overcomplicated some aspects of their work - including making some glaring errors - which meant we left it late to submit our choices. There are a few we might second guess in the not too distant future, and a few surprises for you all in there as well...
 | Hugo Page | Level 4 to Max | 2001 | Cobbles |
| FL | MO | MM | HI | TT | ST | RS | RC | CB | SP | AC | FG | DH | PR | | 71 | 66 | 67 | 68 | 61 | 73 | 70 | 75 | 65 | 76 | 78 | 68 | 70 | 66 | | … | | 73 | 66 | 68 | 69 | 61 | 75 | 72 | 76 | 67 | 78 | 78 | 68 | 70 | 66 |
Originally we planned to develop Page as a pure sprinter, but observation of sprints this season made us think acceleration was less important than it had historically been. With that in mind we've chosen to focus on improving his energy stats at the cost of his acceleration, hopefully also making him a more useful leadout for Peak (and later Mihkels).
 | Henok Mulubrhan | Level 4 to Max | 1999 | Climberv1 |
| FL | MO | MM | HI | TT | ST | RS | RC | CB | SP | AC | FG | DH | PR | | 70 | 67 | 71 | 75 | 62 | 73 | 72 | 74 | 61 | 66 | 70 | 68 | 69 | 57 | | … | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 70 | 69 | 73 | 77 | 62 | 74 | 73 | 76 | 61 | 66 | 72 | 70 | 69 | 57 |
A late addition in transfers, Mulubrhan's development makes him potentially worth keeping as part of our hill squad next season. Alternatively, we may seek to cash in to add to our budget, be that for training or signings, but either way we're glad to see him develop.
 | Laurence Pithie | Level 3 to 4 | 2002 | Fabian |
| FL | MO | MM | HI | TT | ST | RS | RC | CB | SP | AC | FG | DH | PR | | 73 | 66 | 69 | 72 | 71 | 74 | 73 | 71 | 75 | 73 | 74 | 67 | 72 | 69 | | ... | | 74 | 66 | 69 | 72 | 72 | 75 | 74 | 72 | 77 | 73 | 74 | 67 | 72 | 70 | | ... | | 75 | 66 | 69 | 73 | 72 | 77 | 74 | 72 | 78 | 73 | 74 | 68 | 72 | 70 |
Pithie's development plan was the second most complicated for us to figure out this season, due to his varied skillset. For a while we considered turning him into a puncheur/cobbler hybrid, but eventually going all in on cobbles won out. However, we deviated from our original plan to make him a stronger allrounder at the expense of his sprint speed.
 | Stavros Theorpanous | Level 3 to 4 | 2002 | Hills |
| FL | MO | MM | HI | TT | ST | RS | RC | CB | SP | AC | FG | DH | PR | | 70 | 70 | 70 | 70 | 69 | 68 | 71 | 72 | 67 | 68 | 73 | 72 | 69 | 68 | | … | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 71 | 71 | 72 | 73 | 70 | 70 | 72 | 73 | 67 | 69 | 75 | 74 | 70 | 69 | | ... | | 72 | 72 | 73 | 75 | 70 | 72 | 73 | 73 | 67 | 70 | 76 | 75 | 70 | 69 |
We originally planned to turn Theorpanous into an all rounder and flat domestique, but the puncheur route became more appealing when we looked at it in more detail. Few riders will have his combination of skills, which should make him useful on most terrains and competitive in some of the more unique races on the calendar. Plus as you'll see shortly, we identified another candidate to fill his niche...
 | Kantaphon Kunkumpai | Level 3 to 4 | 2002 | Stage Race |
| FL | MO | MM | HI | TT | ST | RS | RC | CB | SP | AC | FG | DH | PR | | 65 | 71 | 71 | 70 | 64 | 72 | 67 | 75 | 56 | 64 | 70 | 63 | 74 | 64 | | … | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 66 | 74 | 73 | 72 | 66 | 74 | 69 | 77 | 56 | 64 | 71 | 64 | 75 | 66 | | ... | | 67 | 76 | 74 | 73 | 67 | 76 | 70 | 79 | 56 | 64 | 71 | 64 | 75 | 67 |
Kunkumpai's development could have gone in a variety of directions - we even considered making him a medium mountain specialist. However, eventually we settled on perhaps the most boring option, but one we think will make him a useful rider in longer stage races in the years to come.
 | Madis Mihkels | Level 1 to 3 | 2003 | Sprinter + Cobbles |
| FL | MO | MM | HI | TT | ST | RS | RC | CB | SP | AC | FG | DH | PR | | 70 | 58 | 61 | 64 | 62 | 71 | 71 | 65 | 66 | 71 | 73 | 67 | 62 | 69 | | … | | 73 | 58 | 62 | 65 | 62 | 74 | 73 | 71 | 69 | 75 | 75 | 67 | 62 | 69 | | ... | | 77 | 58 | 64 | 67 | 63 | 78 | 77 | 78 | 70 | 80 | 79 | 67 | 63 | 72 |
The biggest talent we've possibly ever signed, and our future home nation star, we've taken a slightly different path to developing Mihkels to the one we originally expected. At the expense of a little acceleration we think we've managed to significantly improve his energy stats - and we also hope in the long run to make him more of a threat in races like Qatar.
 | Martin Svrcek | Level 1 to 3 | 2003 | Classics + Cobbles |
| FL | MO | MM | HI | TT | ST | RS | RC | CB | SP | AC | FG | DH | PR | | 68 | 66 | 67 | 68 | 65 | 68 | 66 | 66 | 66 | 64 | 69 | 70 | 68 | 66 | | … | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 71 | 66 | 68 | 69 | 65 | 71 | 67 | 67 | 69 | 66 | 69 | 71 | 68 | 66 | | ... | | 75 | 66 | 71 | 71 | 69 | 75 | 70 | 69 | 74 | 67 | 71 | 72 | 69 | 70 |
The change of plans for Theorpanous was enabled in part by a change of plans for Svrcek, who instead of becoming a puncheur becomes an all rounder and cobbles domestique. That being said, we found this the toughest decision when planning development paths - at various stages our Slovak talent was expecting to be a puncheur, a stage racer, a fighter and then finally the path we settled on. |
