The Race

It’s the penultimate C2 race of the year and in October it’s obviously a hilly one. There’s a downhill after the last climb, so the winning move might be a late attack over the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/Hong Kong/PCM0001.jpg

A big break of 13 gets away quickly. The attackers are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ipc.png Woronieski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tzk.png Johnson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eus.png Lohinsky, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eth.png Nunes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ipc.png De Paula, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tzk.png Bourgoyne, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ple.png Consonni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eus.png Tomsic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/see.png Singh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pbc.png Wang, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/dna.png Hayashibara, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kno.png Lovidius and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ofg.png Todome.
Despite the big number there’s no really strong puncheur in there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/Hong Kong/PCM0002.jpg

After a long flat interlude the break re-enters the hilly part of the race with 73 km to go and a lead of only 2 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/Hong Kong/PCM0003.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ofg.png Todome as the last survivor of the break is caught with 37 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/Hong Kong/PCM0004.jpg

The teams seem to prefer the climbers over the purer puncheurs as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/enb.png Moscon is working at the front of the peloton with 18 km to go while a fast men like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/enb.png Korosec and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kmm.png Rumac have been dropped after having done their share of the work.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/Hong Kong/PCM0005.jpg

Only 19 riders enter the final climb together and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/enb.png Moscon isn’t among them anymore. They have 2.2 km to climb and then 4 km of descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/Hong Kong/PCM0006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ipc.png Paez was the first one to attack, but it’s an effort from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eth.png Sagan who drops 10 riders clear. With him are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kmm.png Masnada, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/taf.png Hoelgaard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ipc.png Paez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/enb.png Smith, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/t3a.png Lagane, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pbc.png Schultz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/see.png Barta, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ofg.png Raileanu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eth.png Gladysh.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/Hong Kong/PCM0007.jpg

And over the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eth.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kmm.png Masnada, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/taf.png Hoelgaard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/see.png Barta get a small gap to the others!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/Hong Kong/PCM0008.jpg

Most of them came back together in the final km, but with 600 m to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eth.png Sagan has a nice lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/Hong Kong/PCM0009.jpg

And this lead is enough for a clear victory!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/Hong Kong/PCM0010.jpg

Behind him are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/taf.png Hoelgaard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kmm.png Masnada, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/see.png Barta and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ipc.png Paez.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/Hong Kong/PCM0011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/enb.png Smith beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pbc.png Schultz for 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/Hong Kong/PCM0012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eth.png Gladysh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/t3a.png Lagane and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ofg.png Raileanu complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/Hong Kong/PCM0013.jpg

Congratulations to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eth.png Sagan who showed he still has it!
