Vuelta a Espana
We’re back in the mountains for stage 16 and these are serious Andorran mountains. The stage is just 96k but opens with the Cat 1 Coll d’Ordino, follows with the HC Coll de la Gallina and finishes with the Cat 1 Cortals d’Encamp. All in just 96k with pretty minimal flat between the mountains. There are also two Cat 2 KOM points on the way up the climb to the finish.
You don’t need me to tell you the stage favorites.
The stage starts at the base of the Coll D’Ordino (19k at 5%) and there are quickly a flood of attackers. Biggest name so far is White Jersey Plapp (also 9th on GC).
We’re up to 37 riders off the front with about 5k gone and EA seems to think that is bad and they are riding.
Another group of 16 goes away. But so far, other than Plapp, nobody really dangerous on GC has escaped. Best placed is Aranburu, 15th on GC. Biggest name is probably Wellens (17th). Plapp’s rival Firdaus (18th on GC, 2nd in Young rider) is also up the road.
12.5k to climb still. The escapees have come into two big groups, one of 23 riders leading the race, the second of 30 riders 1’05 down. Puma domestiques have made it to the front of the peloton, which is another 1’13 down. Vingegaard leading the first group right now. Mamykin, 21st on GC, is in that group.
80k left, 5k to climb, Plapp himself on the front although Evonik also have Eenkhoorn in this group. 56 seconds to the second group which is down to 28. Puma not chasing hard but also not letting things go completely. The peloton is 3’02 behind the leading group. Indosat (Frankiny, Firdaus), Xero (Blums) and Carlsberg (Gregaard) all in this group so doesn’t look like Puma will get a lot of help.
A 14-rider group contests the KOM points. Roson (0+16=16) wins ahead of Mas (32+12=44), Eenkhoorn (2+10=12) and Lopez Nolasco (34+8=42). Mas is 4 points off the KOM lead. In addition to these 4 and previously mentioned riders, Blums, Mamykin, Wellens, Frankiny and Firdaus the remaining survivors are Phodingam, Schlegel, Buchmann, Peters, and Ioannidis. Gregaard and Plapp both dropped. Maybe the Aussie tired from the other day or maybe Eenkhoorn is the Evonik bet for the day. Firdaus being still in this group isn’t great for Evonik. The second group has splintered and 11-riders have emerged as strongest, Rodriguez and Carboni leading that group right now, which is 1’04 down. Peloton is 5’22 down on the leaders.
The long gentle descent off the Col d’Ordino is almost over and in 1k the front group will start the Col de la Gallina (12k at 8.5%). 51k left in the stage, very little flat roads from now on. The 14 front-runners have a 1’45 gap on what has swelled to a 32-rider chase group. Peloton at 5’50 with Rabobank helping Puma. Rabobank do have Van den Broek and Dima in the second group but must not think they are strong enough. Nobody dropped from the peloton so they haven’t been going that hard.
8k to climb for the leaders. Firdaus doing all the work so Indosat are prioritizing the stage win for Frankiny over the White Jersey. Firdaus has pushed the gap to the second group out to 3’01 so not looking good for them. Gap to the peloton pretty stable at 5’30.
Giannoutsos punctures in the peloton but doesn’t lose any ground.
With 4.2k to climb it is over for the second group as Egger brings them back. The catch brings the peloton to 122 riders. The front group has 5’27 but Firdaus has done his work and been dropped. They have 2.3k to the top.
Peters and Ioannidis lose touch with the front group about 1k from the top of the climb.
Frankiny (6+20=26) just beats Wellens at the top with Eenkhoorn (12+14=26) third. Then Schlegel and Mas (44+10=54). Then Lopez Nolasco (42+8=50), Blums and Phodingnam. Mamykin, Roson and Buchmann distanced. Mas the virtual KOM leader, he won that jersey in the TDF last year so he knows what he is doing.
Schiffer and Schinnagel lead an 86-rider peloton over the top 7’17 down. The top 20 on GC all up the road or in the peloton.
The finish is made up of 3 steps, The Cat 2 Aldo de la Comella (4.3k at 8.4%), the Cat 2 Alto de Engolasters (4.2k at 8.8%) and the Cat 1 Cat 1 Cortals d’Encamp (6.4k at 7.7%). There is a short descent between the first and seconds steps and some flat between the 2nd and 3rd. The leaders are about to tackle step 1. Mamykin, Roson and Buchmann have rejoined bringing the group to 11. Peloton at 6’56. The peloton split on the descent and 2nd on GC Girdlestone has been caught out of position.
Lopez Nolasco (50+10=60) goes early and holds the lead to the top of the first step. Frankiny (26+8=34) and Mas (54+6=60), 2nd and 3rd. Gap to the peloton is 7 minutes. 7 minutes is enough to put Mas 4th on GC. Carlsberg are helping with the chase now.
On to the 2nd step, 14k to go for the break. Mamykin and Buchmann have just rejoined after being dropped again on the first step. Roson looks cooked this time. Girdlestone’s group has made it back to the peloton.
At the 2nd Cat 2 Mas gets the jump and the 10 points bringing him to 70. Blums 2nd, Phodingam 3rd. Lopez Nolasco fails to score. Mamykin and Buchmann dropped for good this time. Peloton at 7’24.
On the flat road section between the climbs Mas puts in an acceleration and Wellens is the only one who can’t respond. 7 left in the front group. Behind the peloton is down to 44 and Girdlestone is among those dropped, this time it doesn’t look like he will be able recover.
Mas attacks again as they hit the final climb. The other 6 with him are Phodingam, Schlegel, Blums, Frankiny, Eenkhoorn, and Lopez Nolasco. Peloton is just catching Firdaus, 7 minutes behind.
Schinnagel accelerates on the flat dirt section and causes a split. Herklotz, Dombrowski, Latour, and Carthy are alert. Areruya not so much. Plapp chasing.
Another attack from Mas finally does some damage. Only Blums and Phodingnam can stay with hin.
Work from Godoy and Valter closes the gap in the Red Jersey group just as they reach the finishing climb. Despite the accelerations the gap to the leaders has grown to 8’02, nobody really willing to go hard and Puma doesn’t need to.
Lopez Nolasco closes down the attack in the breakaway. Back to 7 at the front with 3k to ride. Giannoutsos (11th on GC) is in trouble in the Red Jersey group.
2.3k, Mas goes again, again only Blums and Phodingnam can match the acceleration. Behind Herklotz has gone to the front. Ioannidis and Agrotis are trying to help Giannoutsos.
Wait, Herklotz has gone to the front because the cameras missed an attack from Latour and Areruya. They are with Roson and have 40 seconds
1k banner Lopez Nolasco trying to close down the front 3 again, he is 24 seconds down. Schlegel has been gapped. Behind Latour and Areruya have 1’10, Herklotz has a big lead so maybe doesn’t feel the need to go too hard. Firdaus has been dropped from the Red Jersey group.
The front three open the sprint with about 800 meters. Lopez Nolasco 19 seconds down.
300 meters, Mas has been huge today, he still has a clear edge.
Mas wins stage 16. He will also have a nice lead in the KOM competition, Blums is 2nd, Phodingam is 3rd. Herklotz has closed the gap to the two attackers to 46 seconds.
Lopez Nolasco just holds off Eenkhoorn and Frankiny for 4th, fair result as he did all the chasing. Schlegel will get 7th. Wellens is just passing the 1k banner and the attackers are the next riders on the road.
With 1.5k to go Latour dances away from Mamykin, Buchmann and Areruya. Herklotz coming up just behind.
Herklotz sweeps by Areruya with Dombrowski on his wheel. Aranburu a surprise in this group. Champoussin in trouble and Plapp right at the back.
700 meters, Latour’s gap down to 14 seconds. Buchmann helping Godoy on the far side. Wellens has finished 8th.
400 meters Latour still with a small lead over Herklotz. Others still with the German are Buchmann, Godoy, Mamykin, Dombrowski and Aular.
Herklotz has no mercy, he passes Latour on the line. Still the Frenchman should gain on most of his rivals as there is a small gap to Dombrowski.
In the end Mas gains 4’26 on Herklotz enough to move him to 5th in GC. Girdlestone drops well down moving Dombrowski into 2nd and Latour on to the podium.
Plapp extends his young rider lead to 9’01 and Indosat extend their teams lead to 6’53.
More mountains tomorrow.
