Stage 7 Report

Stage 7 is another hilly rated stage. 167k today, it is mostly flat but there is one Cat 2 and more importantly an uphill finish (rated Cat 1). The peloton has not really been interested in contesting these kinds of stages so far, maybe that changes today.

The puncheurs are once again the favorites.

The closest on GC is 14 minutes down so that jersey probably is not going to the break today.

Bad news for the break, Polar thinks this is a pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png McCarthy stage and they are keeping things in check. With 100k to go the break’s lead is just 2’58. Not clear if Polar can do it on their own but if it stays close another team might help. Xero is up front, but haven’t really been helping so far.

71k to go the break as they roll through the 2nd sprint (they ignored the first one as well). Peloton at 2’23, still all Polar on the chasing.

Moving ahead to 44k the break starts the Cat 2 (3.6k at 8.7% with gradients up to 15% at the top). Heinrich, Charmig and Van Bekkum have been dropped. Peloton at 2’08. With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Mas on the front.

Calzoni attacks with 900 meters to climb immediately dropping Setiawa. But Glivar is the strongest by the top with the rest spread out behind him. Calzoni gets second ahead of Kamp.

The front 3 come back together on the descent. After closing at first Mas eases on the climb resulting in the peloton being 2’06 down at the top. With 41k to go it isn’t over for the break.

28k to go for the peloton. UBS (Maciejuk) and Aker (Sarreau, Bakke Christoferson) have joined the chase which is bad news for the 3 survivors as their lead is down to 1’04. Thompson has been caught and the peloton is down to 126 riders. Nobody notable dropped.

The break is over with 11.6k to go and about 8k to the final climb.

The Danes are in control as the peloton starts the final climb, the Alto Cumbre del Sol. It is 4k at 8.6%, the opening 1.5k are pretty mild but the last 2.5k has gradients well over 10%.

A gap is awarded after 15th (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Carthy) of 24 seconds which costs pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Broxham a little bit of his lead but he retains the jersey. The other breakaway riders near the top of the GC all melt away meaning Herklotz is now second although on the same time as Areruya and Aranburu. Helkotz also up to second in the KOM.

Today by far the quietest day so far on the jersey change front as only the team’s jersey changes hands. Aker-MOT had a bad day after their front two and Evonik take the teams jersey 1 second ahead of Polar.
