One of the fast hilly classics of Switzerland is on the program today, while the other part of the PCT punchy peloton is in Italy. Today, one does need to survive all the hills, and they’re numerous, but a strong finish on the flat is necessary to bring back the win. At this game, Demare is the obvious favorite, even though he only ended 9th last season.
We had to wait until the Monte Calangelo to see an established break, as DK Zalgiris and Tryg – Eni are chasing with intensity. Schrettl, Bagnara, Quicibal, Eaton, Fretin, Pollefliet, Bevort and Macias are the lucky ones who’ll have the right to ride the 133 remaining kilometers at the front.
We fast-forward to the end of their ordeal, as the break is caught 39 km from the line. 143 men iun the pack, but the big names all are here.
Some don’t want to wait for a sprint, and attack 10 km later: Scaroni, Lutsenko and Benoot. Sauber Petronas seem to have a plan to tire the peloton ahead of the finale.
They don’t go far.
Plenty of following attacks reduced the main group to 21 riders. Kelderman, Oliveira and Vincent are notably missing.
Hirschi was active before, he attacks again!
The following sets of counters drop Van Niekerk, Bettiol.
Hirschi and Lutsenko got some meters over the last climb. Turgis tries to catch them.
They got a small gap, but the third man isn’t the Frenchman, it’s Eiking. Paez, Narvaez and Luchshenko are out of it.
Nobody commits to the chase, and the gap is up to 35 seconds with 5 km left.
Lutsenko is the fastest of the group. Will it be enough after a hard day?
Hirschi is the first to accelerate.
He still has a very tight lead with 200 m left.
It’s a heartbreak for the home favorite, as Lutsenko takes the win. Eiking is a close 3rd.
Van der Poel, Stannard and Demare win the sprint from the peloton.
Vakoc, Morin, De Bie and Benoot close the top 10.
It’s a tight race, but a deserved win for Lutsenko and DK Zalgiris!
