The organizers have mixed in a single hilly stage in week one and it is today! Will the sprinters be able to hang on today, not primarily to fight for the stage but to keep (or get) the GC lead for the next couple of days? Or will we see a day of proper GC fighting?

KoM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Verwilst (21 points) is joined by three wildcard riders: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/spz.png La Grenade, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/brc.png Girmay and a pretty familiar face in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/brc.png Habimana (16) who is also the only one of those three who can threaten the KoM lead today.

The first half of the stage is mostly flat without any sprints, so the gap went easily up to about 7’30. It’s already going down again with 100 km to go.

The organizers put the only intermediate sprint of the day 20 km into a long though low-gradient climb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/brc.png Habimana uses the opportunity to get his legs and tactics right for the KoM sprints. Those aren’t very hard on paper, but back in the peloton there have been some short splits over the tops of the previous bumps, so all GC riders have to be attentive.

And there has been another split! They’re still more than 3 minutes in front of the peloton with 36 km to go, so maybe those two can actually go for the stage as well. Their former companions have been dropped in the climb though.

The sprinter group made it back in the climb just to be dropped over the top once again.

The KoM leader is dropped again in the next climb, but the gap is also down to 1’30 with 15 km to go.
