It obviously still sucks to have Démare in TDU, Euskal, Lugano and Lisbon - I'm actually a bit surprised to see him in so many C1 races. I count 16 out of 33 RDs (although I'm missing 2), but if he doesn't get much competition in those, he should obviously score really well. Fortunately for all other teams, he'll decline by the end of the year, after having won the individual standings for you (although Areruya will surely put up a good fight).
Guess you're in for a pretty fun season, at least in what concerns Démare and Summerhill - hopefully Schlegel will finally do what he should according to his skills as well!
baseballlover312 and redordead: I almost feel bad for all the points Démare ought to steal at the Vuelta. Although, anyone who didn't see it coming once the wildcards were announced is just a touch blind. Rás and Philadelphia I'm not fully confident about but it would've been a disservice to a MG legend to not give Démare one last chance at winning a monument.
jandal7: Houle in tears? At least I've planned Démare more has a hill-sprinter rather than challenging Areruya as a pure puncheur.
Fabianski: The scary thing is that I could see Démare challenging for the title even after a decline. I don't know if there are all that many more (PT)HC races which I could've sent Démare to. In the hills he'd lose too much time to either the hybrid-puncheurs on semi-mountains or the stage racers in TTs. Nor is he a dominant enough pure sprinter, especially given his lack of FL, to have him ride more truly flat races. I made the decision to instead send him to races perfectly tailored to him - sacrificing scoring potential for a greater likelihood of realisation. Any thoughts or ideas you wanted to share about how you would have panned him would be greatly appreciated, gives me more to work with come next year.
Although it is generally those riders assigned to leadership roles that get all the glory, and their schedules that rivals are most concerned with, it is the domestiques who make up the heart and soul of any team. They are the unsung heroes, the tireless workers, those whose labour provides the necessary foundation on which stars seek to build their own legacies. As we have found on several occassions this season; without the right domestiques, even the strongest of riders will founder.
It isn't always hard work and dreary days in the saddle though. On the odd occassion the humble domestique gets an opportunity to fight for themselves. An opportunity to put their name into the record-books. Maybe the team doesn't have a suitable leader in a specific parcour or maybe a tactical move into a breakaway opens up new possibilities. Either way it is important to recognise the moments these opportunities are seized, as well as the moments where they are not; nor should the less memorable contributions be forgotten. Thus, without further adue, we present the palmarès of the wider Tryg - Gobik squad for 2023. Included are their results from every day of racing, with "*" noting where they made into the breakaway; for those less interested in the minutae there are helpful summaries of each rider's highlights from the season.
Although each and every rider contracted with Tryg - Gobik are talented and dedicated individuals there have been several occassions across this season where the available combination of domestiques have provided inadequate support. This has, at times, proved rather costly. Given the fact that these defects cannot be remedied by the existing cohort and there isn't sufficient space in the budget to make new signings without corresponding departures, there will be some turnover in next year's squad. With a new title sponsor being brought on to replace Gobik there will be new requirements as to demographics; with that, and a clearer picture as to what skills are needed from the domestique pool, everyone will be having their place in the squad reviewed over the off-season.

As part of the deal to secure the arrival of Arnaud Démare, three members of the Tryg - Gobik squad were sent in the opposite direction. For two riders - Georg Zimmerann and Max Kanter - the deal would be permanent, whilst Tobias Halland Johannessen was only there for a year as part of his development plan.
Georg Zimmermann had previously enjoyed great success under cio's management, winning the Youth Classification at the Vuelta a Colombia '21 (2.PTHC) and the Tour of East Java '21 (2.PTHC). Combined with is escapades at the Tour of America '22 (GT3), a potential career as a King of the GT Mountains was envisioned. Unfortunately, that has yet to materialise, with Zimmermann failing to contest the competition in both the Giro and the Tour. On the bright side, he was able to replicate his mature ride from America with solid placings at both the Giro and Tour de Suisse.
Max Kanter started off the year with his victory at Frankfurt Eschborn '22 (1.1) and a stage of the Herald Sun Tour '22 (2.2) as his only major palmarès aside from a handful of U25 classifications. The good news for him is that as a German sprinter on a German team there were plenty of resources devoted to his development. This made him one of the more competitive sprinters in this year's ProTour. Winning another classic and a handful of stages was enough to secure him 38th in the Individual Standings. No Grand Tours this season, but a maillot vert is hopefully in his future.
A year of riding against the best in the business will hopefully mean that Tobias Halland Johannessen is ready to lead the team come 2024. The most important day of his year came on Stage 18 of the Giro d'Italia (GT2). Having joined a strong group of riders in the morning's breakaway, he was able to stay in the front group as they hit the final slopes. One rider dropped, then another, until it was only THJ and Amezawa. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be, and THJ cracked on the Via S Pietro. Although the climb to Bormio 2000 is the most prestigious out there, to have already secured a GT stage at this point in his career would have been a great triumph for the young Norwegian. Alas, there is always next year.

Lovely presentation here as always THJ will be a beast, Demare will still be an elite rider next year, maybe with a sizeable decrease in wage, too. But looking through the results, I think Schlegel and/or Kron will have to take a step forward to propel you into the upper tier of PCT teams. I'm very curious about the new title sponsor and the regional focus that comes with it!
We didn't reach the heights some had envisioned for us at the start of the season but at least we didn't crash as badly as last time round. The obvious standout is Arnaud Démare, who scored 35% of the teams total. His total was only marginally greater than '21 Tim Wellens, although the difference in scoring through the rest of the team is made evident by the fact that Wellens accounted for 43% of scoring that year.
I *might* have been overly harsh in evaluating '21 Toms Skujins as well. Our second scorer was Danny Summerhill and, despite him scoring decently well for his free agency wage, our marquee duo made up about ½ our points; compared to ⅔ in 2021. If the current supporting cast were transported back two years, we might even have stayed up!
Mathias Norsgaard is notable for providing us with the most bang for our buck, although Frederik Rodenberg didn't do half bad in that metric either. I have included €/PPRD as a metric because on all terrains (except TTs) one riders scoring comes at the expense of another, so the less RDs an individual rider uses to score the more RDs are available for others.
It is that time of year again, award season! We've already started surveying the riders on which one of their teammates they feel has contributed the most to the team; last year it was (now retired) Ingvar Omarsson who was the Riders' Rider. Equally, the management has begun reassessing each and every race day in order to identify one that can compare to Georg Zimmerman's Tour of America '22.
There is also an opportunity for you, our loyal fans, to get involved. Last year you voted for Daniel Hoelgaard and Max Kanter as your favourites. Given we haven't released regular updates on the team's escapades throughout the year, we thought it best to provide short blurbs on a shortlisted group. You are, of course, allowed to vote for any of the eligible riders so feel free to check through their palmarès just in case. Once you have made a choice, write in with the name of your chosen candidates.
Fans' Rider of the Year

Already acknowledged as one of the best riders in the world, Arnaud Démare's arrival was a major coup for Tryg - Gobik. During the preseason many commentators expected the competition for the ProContinental Tour's Individual Standings to devolve into a face-off between Démare and the young hybrid-climber Joseph Areruya. Unfortunately those predictions proved ill-fated and a handful of poor outings meant that Areruya ended up dominating unopposed. The only occasion that was singularly Démare's fault was Rás Tailteann, where he couldn't compete amidst the ProTour sprinters. Other than that it was merely a matter of bad luck and poor domestiques. Victory in the Tour Down Under was complemented by seven stage wins and three points classifications, making Arnaud Démare the most successful of our riders this year.
Another veteran with an impressive litany of palmarès, Summerhill was signed to fulfill our sponsor goals. If we had known that Démare was joining us then we would've probably selected races more suitable to him, but Dan did a decent enough job as it was, only missing out at Omloop Het Niuewsblad. The highlight of his season was GP Kigali where he took the win for the third time, bringing an eight year drought on the African continent to an end. Summerhill was also consistent throughout the rest of the Spring Classics but didn't have the finish to compete with the Belgians. In addition to chasing his own victories, Summerhill also formed an important component of Démare's sprint train; the Frenchman's best results came when the flandrien as present. Consistent throughout the whole year, excellent when it mattered, and a real road captain, we have greatly enjoyed having Summerhill this season.

Mathias Norsgaard
Daniel Hoelgaard truly shines at the Continental level, where he can put in dominant performances in 1.2 races. Even though he can't generally threaten the best ProConti puncheurs he would never be continent with just resting on his laurels. Yes, he fulfilled the vitally important role of superdomestique to both Démare and Schlegel but, no, that did not mean he wasn't going to pursue his own glory as well. Combative riding at La Vuelta went unrewarded but he was King of the Dauphiné's Mountains and won the final stage in Japan. On top of that, when Démare's poor descending destroyed his GC ambitions at Euskal Bizikleta, it was none other than Hoelgaard who fought his way to 6th overall, saving the race. Our longest standing member, Hoelgaard always gives everything, as shown by his very solid wage-adjusted scoring.
The exact opposite of Hoelgaard is Mathias Norsgaard. He rides quietly, but consistently, picking up a number of solid results in TTs and, where the parcours permitted, solid GC positions. There were some hiccups along the way, most notably at the Tour of Ukraine and the Tour of Slovenia, where he was completely absent. That can't even be entirely attributed to the PTHC categorisation, as he was 12th overall at the Deutschland Tour after scoring 8th in the TT. Although the Top 10 in the Arab Tour's GC was quite nice as well, it was the Post Danmark Rundt that we want to celebrate the most. Despite having to navigate some rough terrain, Norsgaard survived the Danish hills in time to place 7th in the closing TT. As he had held strong where others had succumbed that was enough to shift him to 5th overall, an excellent result. Not the most flashy rider, not somebody to top the charts, but Norsgaard is homegrown and he was a solid presence throughout the year.

Just looking at Kron's results for the year would make most people question whether he deserves to be shortlisted for this award. When 4th on a stage of Vuelta al Pais Vasco, 10th in the Benelux Challenge and 11th in Emelia are the only notable palmarès, PCT23 must look like a disappointment. That said, the first thing that ought to be taken into account is the fact that Kron, for all his designation as the team's puncheur-leader, was behind several well-established names when it came to the pecking order. The most obvious is Démare; but Schlegel and Seibeb both asserted their authority over the young Dane at times. This means that the only truly pure rides he got this year (aside from those already mentioned) were Ukraine, Strade Bianche and Slovenia. He did decently on the only relevant stage of Ukraine while his time in Slovenia was ruined by a disastrous TTT, only Strade Bianche's 26th was absolutely his own failure. Given the evidence that things have become too crowded in the hills department following the arrival of Démare, the real question to be asking is whether Kron will be among those cleared out.
It was always going to be a challenge, having your first maxed year as a sprinter being against the best the ProContinental level has to offer, with another rider (Démare, again) getting priority scheduling. Still, Rodenberg most definitely made the most of it. He was consistently making the Top 10 on sprinters' stages, only really dropping the ball in the 2.PTHC races. Yes, he struggled at our home race of Danmark Rundt, but our resources were more focused on Norsgaard's GC ambitions; and it was disappointing not to defend the title in Frankfurt, but Rodenberg is not Kanter. The highlight of Rodenberg's season has to be winning the first stage of the Tour of Britain with the U25 classification in Mexico, the only sprinters' stage race he attended, being the other major addition to his palmarès. It was a solid year, not remarkable, but not disappointing, just what you want from a secondary sprinter.
A great stability season. No panic, just settling into the PCT flow. Wondering how you'll progress onwards, can't wait to hopefully be a thorn in Demares side constantly.
