Good luck finding a new contract at good terms w/o one year of racing practice

Would be nice to get a insight scoop on DSM. Wasn't Barguil a buyout either? I think it's fair to say that sportive wise they really get the best out of the riders but what about the money, mgmt and so forth, hm.

What about Movistar? They never replaced Quintana or Landa, so unless they had massive budget cuts they should have room for a second superstar?

They rarely look outside of Spanish or Latin American talent. And they kinda replaced Quintana and Landa with Miguel Angel Lopez

Yeah, they have Mas, now Lopez, and an upcoming talent in Valverde.

Spoiler
In all seriousness, I bet once Movistar loses Valverde, Rojas and Erviti, they will have much more to spend. I'd guess those three are all earning quite decently, being life-ers at Movistar/Caisse/etc, and good friends of Valverde. Jorgensen is a solid prospect too.

Well, I really hope it will not be the case.
However, it is the case, I feel sorry for Davide Formolo, he started to look so good in one-day races.

Hope to see him this year in Tour de l'Avenir.

Ok they got MAL, but I doubt they're paying him more then they payed Quintana (the guy who was going to win TDF a few times). And Mas is not Landa. Plus with all due respect for what Erviti and Rojas do, they're still domestiques. I just don't see how the 2018 team got payed the same as the current squad.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

You go back in time to the Skil-Shimano days and this was a team that got a good reputation for spotting talented youngsters and giving them a chance, but everyone knew this was the focus of the then Pro-Conti team with limited budget.

Without major changes to the background structure it's very hard to shake this perception, especially without major backing. Alpecin and Giant brought more cash that could turn them into a good WT team, but the top riders like Degen/Kittel/Barguil/Dumoulin et al will always hunt the top paycheck.

It's when i look through the current roster, it's packed with talent but lacking that top level skill or depth. It really still feels like a squad with limited budget.

Feels quite similar with the Womens Team. They can't compete budget wise with the best, so can hold some talent and one or two riders for a few seasons. But will always have to refresh every couple of years to stay competitive with their available budget.

With Hirschi, and it does seem to be UAE, this would hold true. I'm sure UAE came along with a sizable contract offer that DSM cannot get close to (as happened with Barguil, Dumo, Kittel etc). And i cannot blame Hirschi for going after that cash either, cycling careers are short and big contracts uncommon.
Then DSM can take the buy-out and probably pay for a good portion of their travel budgets or various extra expenses and ease their own financial pressure. The pay off could easily be ~5% of their entire yearly budget, which is huge as a transfer fee!

Would Hirschi really have such a big buy out fee? I don't think anyone predicted him to be this good already.

I think what has weighed more here are the connections between Mauro Gianetti and Fabian Cancellara, I don’t think the buy out clause would be so significant - which doesn’t mean other teams were in a good position to prepare a huge offer. UAE has the right amount of money, yes, but it also had the right connections most of all.

Depends if he had a buyout clause in the contract. I think it was just a fee that convinced DSM to release Hirschi from his contract and not a buy out fee specified in a contract clause.

Pretty comprehensible decision.

Yes and no, I had no idea his salary was that low but 1M is (relative) peanuts. Aru got almost 3 times that amount from UAE and come on, it's not even a contest who's the better rider.

Yeah, at that much of an upgrade, you have to take the deal. Cycling careers can end with one crash. To make that payday now instead of putting it off negates a lot of risk.

The news article by Blick is one I wouldn't trust, they're known to be inaccurate. He earned a lot more than Min Wage according to what I've read in 2020 (he did in his neo-pro year though). UAE makes sense if he wants to win the big races, they are the best Ardennes Team I guess.

He's not a likeable rider though from what I've read about him, so he fits UAE anyway Pfft

As Croatia said, the minimum salary was from 2019, not 2020. Still, I'm sure he'll earn more at UAE than at DSM.

Idk, looking at Grand Tour Results, Mas isn't really all that far behind Landa, if at all. Plus he's younger.

Also, due to COVID, most sports are seeing way less revenue, so reducing the wage bill, while still rostering a competitive team cant be a bad thing. They still have GT podium challengers, Valverde can still challenge for classics and they seem to have quite a bit more sprinters than Movistar teams have had in the past. Once Valverde retires at the end of 2021, Im sure that will free up enough wages to atleast afford another solid rider, maybe even a leader. Rojas and Erviti wont be far behind, and while they definitely dont earn a leaders wages, I bet they get a solid amount based on loyalty.

At 1mn that is a steal for Hirschi. Wonder if he breaks the contract after he wins Liege and WC to join Ineos for another huge step up Wink At this wage difference he'd be stupid not to take it.
