no Tourmalet, no Pau, no Luchon, no Bordeaux... but la Planche des Belles Filles for 15th time in twelve years. Seems classic era by Tour de France is done...

Yeah, y'all really don't need to read this mess of a brain dump. But i won't delete it just so i can find a few of these reference figures again in the future.

Sounds like an amazing route, can only echo your sentiment when it comes to the prize money, I don't any can expect equal splits but the split from PR should never be repeated.

Prize money @ 250k. Equivalent split for 8 days of the Tdf Hommes is about 750k. So it's better than PR but still about 2/3 of the way short of where it should be.

Looking at what they make in sponsorship return I couldn't disagree more. In sports where women generate more money they should be paid more, in jobs where they do equally they should be paid equally and when they generate less it's only reasonable that they receive less. Equality does not equal equity in my opinion.

It's nothing against women's cycling, it's just the same logic as why football players are paid more. They do not "do more" or are "better", but sports is a place where this public attention dictates the salaries/prize money and that is fair to me.

I'd start talking about viewing figures, race ownerships etc etc but the issues are so deep that these arguments become very circular very quickly.

For example, The Tour of Britain this season had full live coverage on Free-to-Air TV in the UK. Makes it super easy to access for anyone with a TV signal and has guaranteed pretty consistently strong viewing numbers.
The Womens Tour this season, had zero live coverage. At all. Anywhere.
So obviously the ToB generates more viewship figures and impressions vs the Womens Tour, but it's hardly and equal or equitable playing field.

Lets roll this onto the Tdf Hommes & Femmes. TdF Hommes as well all know has full live coverage, and in a lot of countries this includes pre & post race shows as well. TdF Femmes is only getting up-to 2.5 hours of live coverage (won't comment on surrounding shows etc because obviously there is no actual evidence yet). But given an average TdF Hommes stage takes about 5-5.5 hours compared to the 2.5 there's already a loss in both pure time, and in percentage of stage coverage (100% for Hommes, ~75% for Femmes depending how fast they race).

Of course that's dependant on how the TV coverage is generating money for ASO. France Television paid about €20mil per year for all ASO sports events upto 2020 (more up-to-date figures are obviously hard to find). This packaged included various women events, mixed events etc etc. It's a similar set-up for ASO selling the rights to Discovery through 2026, ASO bundles up all their races and some other events and Discovery buys it as an overall package.
To ASO whether it's Paris-Roubaix or Paris-Roubaix Femmes, TdF Hommes or TDF Femmes, Paris Marathon Elite Men or Paris Marathon amateurs makes no difference. It's all part of the one fee payment.
And when we're talking about 2.5% of a single years rights deal from the domestic French rights the argument "there isn't money available" for me doesn't track. Becuase it's definitely there.

Ooof this is getting much longer and more rant like than i had intended

And i have not even started talking about the UCI's differences in minimum prize money. Or how the UCI is still failing to properly implement minimum wages (they are getting there for WWT squads, although a lot of those riders will dispute even this), and that how Prize Money is a vastly more significant part of the normal female cyclists yearly income as a result.

Then there was a whole thing on value and equal work to dive into. And those sports which have invested strongly and early in womens sides are those with some of the strongest bases and fastest growing revenue steams.

Would have been here writing for hours Pfft

And tbf i even have some positives to say about ASO & the prize pot (it's still one of the biggest in the WWT!) but yeah this is long and it's TMM off on another classic rant which we really don't all need to read again and again.

Even for a 21 year old, that's harsh. Something is wrong with that team but no one wants to say what it is.

Just check the latest Wielerflits Interviews with their team chefs. There you know it. I think it's an approach that you either love or hate. Riders that love it are very successful and perform over their potential (I guess), others fail to live up to that. I think their approach is valid, but the fallout coming from it is inevitable.

Thanks for the heads up! Just wow. Why are we talking shit about Lefevre?

I'm going to predict that unless they get a new manager, that team is done by the end of next year. Every good rider wants to leave and the ones that stay (for now!) like B̶e̶n̶o̶o̶t̶, Bardet and SKA aren't even close to the level one would expect of them.

Arabay Team joins forces with Cycling Friendly for the next season. You'll wonder why this venture into Spanish cycling lower level. Well, besides my interest in it, it's because they have an awesome jersey for 2022. Grin

Mark Padun is leaving Bahrain to EF, apparently. Ineos was also in the mix, hopefully it was just an unfounded rumour because this would have been the most red flag transfer of the past few seasons.

I mean, I do like all the red flags bunched together in the red flag teams...

Padun at EF is a great choice, I like his style at the team. Feared that he'd join Ineos.

Nieve seems unable to find a team for 2022 at WT level. Caja Rural is rumoured to take him on, but there isn't anything confirmed yet.

I've been finding how some of the older pros who still have decent level are getting "ditched" to be interesting. It seems a bit like the reversal of the late 2000's/early 2010s, where teams would be filled with road captains to mentor youngsters. Seems like we are witness a reverse trend and I wonder why is that for.

Not only that, but De Gendt's comments and also Docker this week are actually very curious regarding the state of the peloton regarding how young riders are getting treated and the culture its creating. I wonder if both are connected.

Very bizarre that Nieve can't get a ride. Obviously past his peak, but he's shown to be a very solid mountain domestique the last few years.

I would love if he'd go back to Euskaltel-Euskadi, that would be insanely cool!

I guess it comes down to his salary demands and what World-Tour teams are willing to pay a 37 year old squad filler. Probably get a younger, more hungry up and coming rider for a similar cost, if not cheaper.

I'm guessing there isn't too much call for a mountain domestique who doesn't win much on his own on the continental tour.

Wouldn't surprise me if this stuff is a culture shift at all. There's been a HUGE influx of data-driven "results" in the last few years, and with the takeoff of Zwift and GCN in the larger world beyond just cycling enthusiasts, there seems to be a significantly higher knowledge base for juniors and team staff to pull from before they ever set foot on the world stage. Could be an explanation for why we're seeing incredible solo rides, but very strange tactical decisions in the peloton.

Honestly, Doug Ryder is one of those people that doesn't take "NO" for an answer. But right now the situation with his Qhubeka team in the World Tour is so dire to the point that it makes zero sense to keep torturing himself anymore. He has to accept defeat and go back to the basics - what made this team so special was it provided a platform for African riders and many owe their careers to Qhubeka. But now it's just another run-of-the-mill team without the thing it made it special anymore.
