Kelderman being back to Kelderman...

I like that Saxobank is sponsoring Team DSM / Sunweb. Cool stuff to see them back in a WT team.

Volta ao Algarve will be postponed to May given the complete fuckery of Covid cases (and general people stupidity) that is currently happening here in Portugal.

It seems that May will be full of cycling.
For the Portuguese friends, it seems that the people stupidity it is one of the many common traits around the globe nowadays.

Does anyone actually know whether the remaining Spanish/French races will go ahead as planned? I’ve seen they have either announced routes and start/finish locations, but honestly can’t say this is enough to guarantee there are no plans of postponing. Pfft

Of course, question directed to any member living in Spain or France that could help with a prediction. Smile

So far yes, Valencia GP on the 24th, Valencia will surely go ahead, Andalucia for sure aswell. France have Marseillaise, Besseges, Provence and Haut Var all scheduled. If all of these go ahead it is already quite a stacked calendar regarding what could happen.

Well, Andalucia Ruta del Sol will also be postponed, according to reports.

EDIT: Supposedly to the month of May, just like Algarve. Finding very unrealistic these races can all take place in a stacked calendar during that month. Some will either be cancelled or face further postponement, I reckon.

all this races during Giro?? nah...

Well, Tour de Normandie, which was scheduled for May, has been cancelled, so it seems that the calendar won't be so stacked after all.

Still, I don't think many Pro Conti would even participate in that race, perhaps just French teams. WT quite certainly wouldn't be interested too.

Besides the Giro, you will also have 4 Jours de Dunquerque, Tour of Norway, Tour of Hungary (which also usually attract a bunch of WT teams), Vuelta a Madrid, Boucles de Mayenne. Of course, Tour of California no longer takes place (and if it did, it would most likely be cancelled), so that could open another space for WT/PCT teams to send a squad to some of these other races. However, Algarve/Andaluzia/Mallorca/Murcia, these are usually prep races for the first half of the season. Of course, they can be used to prepare fitness for the Tour, but this could also have implications in other WT races (too close to the Classics and Dauphine - May usually a month of rest for some key riders). Not sure if teams developed a contingency calendar plan for their roster, so we will have to see.

Still, I believe Algarve will go ahead, even with a reduced list of participants. Portuguese teams need to compete given their precarious conditions, so if health & safety has improved I think our national federation and organizers will show their best efforts to make it happen. However, this will depend on the stabilization of the Covid 2nd/3rd/whatever wave crisis. May can either be seen as: the month after the Classics season or the month everyone is estimating Covid has at least been stabilized in some European countries (which is a farfetched prediction as it is nearly impossible to say what will happen in a few weeks' time, let alone months).

As for Normandie (and Circuit de la Sarthe), I wouldn't be surprised municipalities were not interested in hosting the race caravan. I think cycling has proven it can efficiently create race bubbles and strict health protocols, but at this time the risk of contagion is far too heavy a responsibility for these municipalities. Especially given the circulation of the new variants. Hence why I also believe Andalucia has been postponed (after the organizers met with the local government), and Valencia remains on the calendar - even though the situation's getting worser there.

Just my two cents on this matter. Again: hopefully we can have a decent season with exciting WT races, even if the first one we have is the UAE Tour. Pfft

Reports coming that Dumoulin is temporarily stopping his career. I'm not sure how true they are but, maybe our dutch members can help out:

Official.

Surprised, but to be honest, not shocked. His last two years have been terrible and he never seemed to be motivated on the bike.

ringo182
As well as his injuries, he seems to be suffering mentally as a result of his drastic dip in form. He was being talked about as dominating the GTs for the next few years and he has just gone backwards. Hopefully he will recover, but you do worry that an extended break from racing will simply put him even further back in the pecking order. He should be at the peak of his powers at this age. You have to wonder if that is the end of Tommy D, certainly as a GT contender.

You could see something was off in Le Tour, one stage where he felt bad and he immediatly gave up. If he held on there, they had more options to defeat Pogacar in the last week.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

so many times we saw riders announcing a career break and all paired by just one solution...

This is too similar with Marcel Kittel case.

Maybe the move to Jumbo-Visma wasn't the best, after all.

I thought of this as well - seems like something more of a coincidence, to be honest.
