Tour du Maroc Discussion

Late in the season a 9-day stage race in the PTHC category, which could really become a huge race in terms of promotion or relegation decisions.

5 flat stages, 2 mountain stages and 2 hill stages. It really needs more than a pure climber to win here. A good allrounder should be top favourite and there are plenty on the startlist.

GC Favourites

Basically two names stand out on the startlist. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Dombrowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Sicard are both proven riders and while first is one of the best climbers and should be able to gain some time on the others on the mountain stages, later is the more complete rider, who should be able to gain time on most on basically any non-flat stage.

Behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Kudus might be the most interesting as he had a great season so far and surely wants to finish his season in style once again showing his great potential. Velits, Wellens, Nibali, Schelling and Ji are great riders obviously but lack a bit to be at the very top or don`t perform very consistently.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Beltran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Preidler with a special mention due to their nice combination of stats, which should help them having a solid race as well and maybe are up for a surprise. Same likely to be said about pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Talansky, who also missed consistency though in the past.

On the other side of the table below the pure climbers with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Hirt surely still the best alrounder and in for a good result. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Marquez shows his great climbing skills regularly and must be watched for those 2 mountain stages. GC wise most of them though will struggle against the more complete left side.

Puncheurs & Sprinters

Alongside the already mentioned Beltran and Sicard, some more riders surely look out for the hill stages with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_azt.png Chaves and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Boily being the better ones.

Sprint wise a very good field seeing the amount of race days. Ciolek, Goss, Vanderbiest, Van Poppel, Roelandts... quite a list of often 2nd row sprinters on PT level that now have the chance for multiple stage wins.

Amazing startlist! Kudus, you need to get that podium spot whatever it takes.
Jurgen, there are 5 sprints, you better score big points Pfft Let's use you good hill stat to be better than pure faster sprinters Wink

This is a huge race for us, a race where a spot in 2019 PT is decided for us, and there's a kinda weak startlist that could see us scoring really big, exactly what we need
Manager of [MG] Repsol - Netflix

Ok much stronger startlist than we expected, looking like this could very well be a 0 pointer, don't trust DLC in this field at all.
Dombrowski started the season with a win. Time to end it with one as well.
Could really do with a Yates top 5 here and Lander popping up in the sprints - a decent score here should hopefully see us right back in the top 5 fight, and with Japan to come then there's reasons for optimism.
No RD left for Uran. Drapac will probably DNF on the first mountain stage. This was a filler race in the planning all along.

I’d love a nice Velits send-off - not sure if that means he’ll overachieve and nab a top 3 or be maddeningly inconsistent and come 7th despite two stage podiums and huge time gains in the hills - either would suit his season well Pfft Bennett in support and also suits this parcours, however so do many of the top 10-20 climbers do not sure where he’ll end up as a domestique. Our future is in the PCT, it’ll take a big effort here to achieve our top 15 goal, our riders have given up on the last 2-3 months but in fairness Velits hasn’t raced, so let’s hope he gives us a huge push over the top 15 line!

Could Garby cement his status as an all time Carlsberg legend with a season saving performance here? Would be a helluva stor Pfft

Big race!

Slightly surprised to see Dombrowski and Sicard here, which obviously complicates things for Beltran. The former must be the big overall favourite. Had hopes of a podium for Beltran when selecting him for this race, now it seems a top 5 must be our goal. Really hope he can make use of stage 2, as the only hilly stage before we hit the mountains, a good result there could be key for his overall ambitions and how he races the mountains. I mean, he's the best puncheur, and especially on such mountainous routes, by quite a bit, so I can only get disappointed... Grin Pfft

Another factor for Beltran is the very limited support he'll have. CF Hagen will probably be last man standing for him on the hills, while Lunke can hopefully stay with him for a while in the mountains. But we can't have both, as Ciolek will hopefully get a train here.

For the sprints, it's also looking promising, with most other sprinters also having a relative low ACC stat similar to Ciolek. Obviously except for Gaviria, who well could run away with a win or two here against, only stat wise, better sprinters.
It's not extremely encouraging to have pretty much all your hopes for avoiding relegation on the shoulders of Garby and AKA... but here we are.

AKA has a shot at some top 5's here and frankly they are a must. With the hills, Garby can't be expected to do anything at all, though it would be nice to have him ride aggressively in the mountains and give us a shot.

Edit: And of course, I can't forget that we're competing directly with Lierse here. We have to outperform them at all costs. I hate to root for another team's failure, but Garby has to outperform Senni, and AKA has to latch onto Gaviria and pass him at all costs. Name of the game right now.

Let's get this party started I guess.

Vanderbiest really has a good shot to get at least 1 stage win which would help us out a bit in the standings. Don't really think there's a chance we'll go down, but hopefully Palini gets a few results on the hills as well to round out the season

I think it's just fair to root for Moser here? Grin
WCC have sent the leadership combo of Ji and Boily to a number of PTHC stage race outings, and they have proven to generally be anonymous thus far. Even in the face of this evidence though, I hold out hope that the parcours here for the Tour du Maroc is the best suited for them to get involved towards the sharp end of the racing to come. Some of the flat 'sprint' stages look quite tough - Lay gets a chance at a free role to surf the wheels of others lead-out trains in those stage finales.

A steady points haul here will more or less guarantee WCC's PCT status for next season, and perhaps even launch a last late push towards the top 15 overall in the PCT standings; a crucial sponsor goal. For safety sake though, outscoring Lierse and Carlsberg is the first main target. Much as I enjoy pizza and a brewski, in this instance we have to be a bit selfish and look to our own survival.

Dombro and Sicard really stand out in this start-list, with Beltran as a wild card - they constitute the top 3 favourites in my book.
Manager of ISA - Hexacta in the MG
Eastman gave an unimpressive performance in his final showing in ToA, now Chaves gets his chance in a more difficult race to show that he can still be a team leader going forward.

Very strong startlist for this race, which could easily lead to some very strange results.
AZTECA - NBCSN pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png
Haha, what a mess!

And then, what a win for Carlsberg Shock Big congratulations, bbl!

Hopefully we'll only improve in the work leading up to the sprint, as that seemed to be every man for himself. Third place in a sprint is obviously not what we came here for with Ciolek, but hopefully we manage to get it right on stage 4 and 5.
You're joking.

Have fun in PCT next year, BBL.

Maybe i was too sleepy to see the images well, but Roelandts was mentioned over and over and until the final image i couldn't even spot him

Well, fourth to start is a great result, and Goss missing out on the stage win is even better. Also important to see Kudus as one of the best GC riders in the sprint, something that usually shows great form coming into the important stages
Manager of [MG] Repsol - Netflix

Probably the worst start we could have had in the last race that could have given us some hope. Gonna cheer for Carlsberg now, they deserve it most of us three.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.
Did we just do that?

Great sprint preparation, though a bit of a bummer to not get the win. Was in two minds really whether I wanted Rosas to survive or go full Drapac, guess we got neither.
Manager of Minions
Carlsberg with another huge result. Add the bonus points for wearing jerseys and it suddenly looks quite good for them. Congrats bbl. Shock

dont like it though since its a huge downswing for netia
