Cycling Awards Discussion
Here's a place to discuss the awards for real-world cycling achievements, it's a good place to remind people of a particular awesome GT stage you think should be GT Stage of the Year or discuss whether or not your favourite French sprinter had his best season even (spoiler: he did). It's a long cycling season, so this is the place to discuss the year in it's entirety so everybody can determine which cyclist, team or race really is deserving of a prestigious Daily award. The awards are listed below or in the main awards discussion thread:

Rider of the Year

Surprise (Rider) of the Year

Team of the Year

Grand Tour of the Year (Nominations not necessary)

Grand Tour Stage of the Year

WT Stage Race of the Year

Non-WT Stage Race of the Year

Stage (non-GT) of the Year

WT Classic of the Year

Non-WT Classic of the Year

The cycling awards are the ones that generally get the most attention in the voting phase, but because the nomination phase might be tougher for most, they actually get the least nominations. This thread serves as a way to brush up everyone's memory about what happened during the 2018 calendar year.

What you can do in this thread:
- Mention any particular that you think was worth remembering about the 2018 cycling season: specifically, you can post info about particularly worthy races that you think might have been overlooked, riders that had special seasons etc.

What you can not do in this thread:
- Go off-topic. This thread is strictly dedicated to the cycling awards. If you want to discuss other awards, you're encouraged to do so in the main thread:
- Argue about why you think something another user proposed is not even worth nominating;
- Officially nominate something. That should still be done via a PM sent to Knockout as instructed in the main awards information thread.

My bid:
Rider of the Year: Simon Yates. Why? Overall performance really eye cathing. Aggresive new style. Domination from start of the season. Close to win 2 GTs (just 1 bad day in the Giro) Top 5 in Tour of Poland, Catalunya and Paris-Nice.

Surprise (Rider) of the Year: Primoz Roglic, really dominating winning both le Romandie and tour of the Basque (2 really hard races). Not to forget the 4th overall at the TdF and the legendary stage win.

Team of the Year: Quick-Step Floors. 73 wins. You cannot argue that. I know the nomination is not defined by wins, but when you break the records they deserve it.

Grand Tour of the Year (Nominations not necessary): La Vuelta

Grand Tour Stage of the Year: Giro d'Italia: Stage 19 - Venaria Reale › Bardonecchia.

WT Stage Race of the Year: Paris Nice

Non-WT Stage Race of the Year: Tour of the alps

Stage (non-GT) of the Year: Amgen Tour of California- Stage 6 » Folsom › South Lake Tahoe the rise of Bernal the beast

WT Classic of the Year: Paris-Rubaix - the world champion attacking 50 km (abouts) to the finish line. An underdog from the early breakaway following him all the way. One velodrome - do I need to say more?

Non-WT Classic of the Year: Paris - Tours Elite always stunning to watch. My memory from the spring might be selective..

A few thoughts

Rider: Yates is a good call but Tom D. with 2nd in the Giro and TDF would be my call.

Surprise Rider: Mas getting the podium in the Vuelta sticks with me.

Team: Hard to argue with Quickstep

GT: Probably the Vuelta, would have said Giro but then that stage happened.

GT Tour Stage: TDF Stage 8, Droux - Amien. Ok nobody else thinks Dylan Groenewegen's 2nd sprint win was that memorable but I stood in the sun in Amiens for 6 hours to hold a spot 200 M from the finish having had about 2 hours sleep on an overnight flight from the US. And it was a day the peloton decided should be a bonus rest day so they were 45 minutes behind schedule. It was totally worth it. Sagan blew past less than 3 feet from me at a full sprint (He went a little early that day).

WT Stage Race of the Year
: Paris Nice

WT Classic of the Year: Liked the the Nibali - Pinot duel at Lombardia and Pinot is a likable winner.
I think that we should keep in mind for the surprise rider of the year the best Danish rider of 2018, Michael valgren.
He had a very good season and won a lot more than the people gave him credit for.
Good call.. I guess he won 2 semi classics. He should be considered indeed but idk if its a huge surprise as he did well last year too.

What about Elia Viviani for either Rider of the Year or Surprise of the Year. He's shown a level far ahead of everything he's done before, despite last year winning a couple of WT classics (Hamburg, Plouay), but this year he's been simply the best sprinter in the world. He's also in the first places in all rankings of the year, so imo he deserved at least to be in the voting phase

Also, continuing with sprinters, let's talk about Pascal Ackermann. From being no one in 2017 to be one of the most promising sprinter in the world, and winning like 8 WT races this year

Also Ulrich, to follow your trend with GT Stage of the Year Pfft Let's nominate final stage of La Vuelta because if was able to get a photo with Peter Sagan after the finish

Viviani had said before the season he could win as much as Kittel, and I follow Valgren's Strava for about 2 years I knew perfectly that he was capable of riding the way he did this year.. Ackerman was more of a surprise, Mohoric finally revealed himself, Sosa also a big revelation, Laporte and Carapaz maybe the two others.
I have to say Simon Yates deserves to be mentioned as surprise rider of the year, since twelve months ago I would say his twin brother was more likely to finish on the podium of a Grand Tour, let alone win one and dominate 75% of another. Then again, the clear shot is at rider of the year, along with others such as Valverde, Dumoulin and Roglic.

Oh and Toms Skujins for surprise rider of the year, along with Patrick Konrad, Pello Bilbao and Michael Valgren, who upped their level from 2017. Speaking of those who have been mentioned, other young riders such as Ackermann, Mohoric and Mas are obvious choices too. Smile

EDIT: I'll add an honorable mention of Jaakko Hanninen for all the Finnish members out there
I nominate Chris Froome for his selfless ride at the Tour when he let Thomas have the win Wink

If definition "surprise rider" just means they have to surpise once a year I would go for Dillier Smile

Rider of the Year: Christophe Laporte. One of his best seasons ever, just an incredible rider, but this year he won Tro Bro Leon, 2nd in a TDF stage (and a couple top 5s), 4th in Gent - Wevelgem, an ITT win in Baloise, 2 stage wins in La Provence and a stage in Bessages. Most incredible however, is 13th in Milan - San Remo, with a broken wheel! He's the best rider in the world, so let's not be as generous to the other riders as Laporte is with race wins. Smile

Otherwise, Bardet kinda had an understated fantastic classics season.

Surprise: Can I say Ciccone? I want to say Ciccone, but I like Ciccone and I don't think he's really a surprise. Can I also say Tafi?

Otherwise, I hate to say it, but Gerraint Thomas was really the biggest surprise, winning the TDF was a huge overperformance even with Sky. Vivianni could be too I guess but also best rider.

Team: The reincarnation of Tabriz Petrochemicals, Gun Ay Tabriz Team is pretty promising, but I will raise you Sovac - Natura4Ever instead, Davide Rebellin rides for them. So that should be enough.

Also, Cofidis has Jesus Herrada and Laporte and being incredible.

GT: Vuelta a Portugal <3

GT Stage: Stage 6 of the Giro, Chaves + Simon Yates 1-2 and that first big statement from Yates, really awesome. Stage 18 of the Tour was kinda fantastic as well.

Non-WT Stage Race: La Provence, far and away. Tour of the Alps possibly as well.

WT Classic: Got to be Strade Bianche, incredible race in the mud, I like the idea of RVV as well, PR just for Dillier honestly, I kinda wish I'd seen Lombardia too. Pfft

Non-WT Classic: Tro Bro Leon, incredible route, great racing, really has to be that!

Surprise Rider definitely Carapaz for me, what a year he had. Great races all around, I go with the obvious Roglic for rider of the year though.
