Welcome to Canada for a short climbing challenge which will decide the national champion! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Boily surely the name on fan's lips as the nations best climber, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Hughes isn't far behind and being on a Canadian PT team means he has much more support. The pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Goldcorp duo of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Britton and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Salas will also be a threat to win if they can coordinate their efforts, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Meier may also pose an outside threat.

A few amateurs go up the road, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png RBC seem pretty keen to set a harsh pace on the front, using their numbers advantage to try to control the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/NC/CAN/MG17_CanNC_1_002.jpg

With 25km left this pace is enough to split the pack, 11 riders get a gap off the front and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Hughes is missing! A couple of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png RBC riders who could've made it into this group even sat up to wait for him but he's really far back in the pack. The guys to make it in are:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Naud, Cataford, Duchesne
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Anderson, Hamilton, Salas, Britton
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Woods
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Piccoli
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Boily
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Veilleux

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/NC/CAN/MG17_CanNC_1_003.jpg

The pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png RBC riders bring most the missing pros back though, only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Boivin is missing from this group with 22km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/NC/CAN/MG17_CanNC_1_004.jpg

The pace is really hard in this group and riders are being shed pretty quickly, especially now as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Hughes takes up the lead. As they pass under the 10km banner, there's only 7 riders left:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Hughes, Cataford
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Boily
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png De Vos
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Piccoli
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Salas, Britton

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/NC/CAN/MG17_CanNC_1_005.jpg

No surprise what happens when pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Boily takes the lead with 6km left, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Hughes is the only one who can hold on. The two best are looking to fight it out one-on-one!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/NC/CAN/MG17_CanNC_1_006.jpg

Neither wants to attack though, just both of them riding a solid tempo to distance the others, as both must back themselves in a sprint! Final Kilometre.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/NC/CAN/MG17_CanNC_1_007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Boily clearly the superior sprinter though, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Hughes tries to come past he finds he really does not have the legs, dropping back behind his compatriot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/NC/CAN/MG17_CanNC_1_008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png David Boily wins the Canadian National Championships! Clinical victory by him, not wasting any energy. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Hughes in 2nd had to attack if he wanted to win and clearly couldn't, not a bad performance by him though and clearly the 2nd strongest as there's over 3 minutes before 3rd place, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Britton, crosses the line.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Cataford must have unbackable odds odds as the nation's superior time trialist, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Meier is the only other rider who can even dream of winnning.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/NC/CAN/MG17_CanNC_1_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle sets the best time before the last two riders, his time of dead on 1 hour and 10 mintutes will guarentee him the podium at least.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/NC/CAN/MG17_CanNC_1_010.jpg

Unsurprisingly, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Meier is much faster, 2'28 faster that is, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Cataford is still on course though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/NC/CAN/MG17_CanNC_1_011.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Cataford stops the clock at 1 hour and 7 minutes exactly! Super performance by him and enough to collect the National colours for 2018!
