Off-season holiday reports
Chapter 2:
i.imgur.com/h8LIsx1.png
Andrónico Mendigain: Angel Cerezo and me had spoken about paying a visit to the African continent. As we both only recently moved from our home country, we thought a Spanish speaking country would be a good choice. We are not that fluent in English yet.

In the end only one country turned to have Spanish as an official language: the former Spanish colony nowadays known as Equatorial Guinea.
i.imgur.com/0sE8Y5p.png
i.imgur.com/nJkRDis.png
The country's capital was quite nice actually. There are some historical buildings including this cathedral of Santa Isabel, that sadly got damaged in a recent fire. The urban national park covering 500,000 m² was definitely a nice setting for our only biking time during this trip.
i.imgur.com/wF4tXwA.png
i.imgur.com/Y1aEXsj.png
Angel Cerezo: on the southern part of the Bioko island, some truly picturesque shampoo commercial waterfalls feature in Caldera de San Carlos nature reserve. Sadly I could not convince Andrónico to stay much longer than two days.

Despite being born in a country renowned for its rainforests, he is not too fond of local wildlife wherever it contains many spider and snake species. He couldn't get on a plane out of there fast enough.

See you soon, fans!

Thank you both, looking forward with you. For the first time in years, many key riders have an expiring contract. Add Cerezo and Cortes, who are vital in the cobbles lineup, to the list of the ones you already mentioned...

The first World Tour stage of the year ended with the expected bunch sprint. Our train worked quite well but Barbero got boxed in near the barriers. Local hero Caleb Ewan sprinted to the ochre leader jersey as he beat Peter Sagan. Barbero and Verona came 11th and 12th as they saw a time gap be awarded just behind them.

The pack failed to chase hard enough on the slightly undulated second half of stage 2. Astana's Vladislav Filipovich won the stage from the break, Scott Thwaites got the leaders jersey as a consolation prize.

A very rare sight on stage 3: a TDU mountain stage. Three of our men showed great legs on the flanks of Mount Kosciuszko, the highest mountain on the Australian mainland. Wellens won the final sprint of a not so thinned bunch, with Sagan taking the overall lead.

After this stage, we had riders in GC 2nd, 4th and 8th.

This year's Willunga stage had three ascents. Bilbao secured the KoM jersey by reaching the top first two times. The break was swept up after the second ascent. Barbero and his GC ambitions were dropped there too.

i.imgur.com/6i6iPZN.png

On the last, nobody could keep up with Valérien Galtier's strong acceleration. The Frenchman and winner of LBL in 2020 is basicly a younger version of Alaphilippe, who left Bahrain to ride for his own chances at AG2R. Only Alaphilippe finished in the same time today as Galtier moved into the leaders jersey.

At the back of the chasing group, we again just missed the top 10 with Verona. He also dropped to... 11th in the GC.

On the traditional closing criterium in Adelaide, we finally found our way into the stage top 10. Barbero scored our first WT point of the season with a strong fourth place.

Finishing 11th in the final GC, Verona equaled our best ever overall result here in Australia in his first race with our team.

Nice to see Caja Rural (or Ruralvia) in action again. Yeah, the GC looked so good after stage 3, you'd hope for a better result in the end. But the mountain jersey is a nice consolation.

Well, you're on the board at least, WT points wise and the mountain jersey is a nice bonus. And then it still always makes me so happy how clean and pretty the visuals are, though I feel like I point this out like every third time I post here Pfft

(Also, that should be Barbero in 4th place in the last stage's results, right?)

I agree. A he queen stage was too tough for Barbero and Herrada didn't have the legs either. If Carlos hadn't been forced to swerve past a rider in-game, he probably would have gone to the line with the chasing group. That would've put Verona on the GC podium...

Vuelta a San Juan was the first race of the season for Vuelta winner Guerreiro and sprint talent Manuel Martínez, who finally wants to start landing wins this year.

i.imgur.com/OyDqPtR.png

On stage 1 he almost managed to pull one off already, as he finished second only behind Total's Christophe Laporte. Sprints favourite Matthews couldn't do better than fourth.

The stage finish on Mirador de Potrero was an early test for the GC riders on stage two.

i.imgur.com/lmiXn6H.png

Matthews' late sprint just about didn't suffice to snatch the win from Louis Meintjes. The thin South African also moved into the leaders jersey.

Guerreiro finished with the best of the rest, losing only a handful of seconds.

Stage four, with its finish atop Alto del Amago, had GC contenders showdown written all over it. The break of the day was caught before the final climb.

i.imgur.com/PdHjzLR.png

Pinot attacked from very far out and only Ruben would catch up after closing the gap gradually. Two kilometers from the top, the rest of the field was already facing a huge time deficit.

i.imgur.com/LC93c72.png

Ruben caught a short breath before making his move in the steeper final kilometer. Pinot had to leave him the stage win but didn't concede any extra seconds. That couldn't be said about the rest of the so called contenders, who all lost heaps of time.

Cerezo had saved his legs for the time trial but the Costa Rican champion didn't handle the course to perfection, as he even failed to set a provisional fastest time.

GC wise, Ruben was a little too conservative on some sections. Pinot rode 11" faster and took over the GC lead, as former world champion Talansky won the time trial.

Guerreiro thus had to make up a few seconds and got a presumably last chance to do so on the mountain stage to Comechingones.

Ruben struggled to follow the first group and could only catch up after Pinot had already attacked.

The Frenchman kept gaining time and secured the overall win here. He would also take the mountain jersey from Ruben, who finished in fourth place.

Manuel Martínez was hoping to improve on his second place in a San Juan stage on our last day in the Challenge. Despite the flat course, he ran out of helpers.

Our former rider Lluis Mas Bonet caught and dropped Drobisch inside the last kilometer. The sprint for second was won by Tinajero, another former rider of us. Our sprinter Martínez launched a little late and came fifth.

He should have, I agree. And the Verona didn't get on his wheel situation was silly too, reminded me of the Firenze WC even. Pfft
