This has been a really good Vuelta for the team, the stage from tomorrow is just a formality Pfft

Stage 21

imageshack.us/a/img267/971/stage21.jpg

The final stage of the Vuelta! After the start at te racing circuit, the riders head to Madrid for a few laps at the final circuit. 95 kilometres are between Robert Gesink and the Vuelta-win.
imageshack.us/a/img542/3607/madridj.jpg

12km to go

The rain is pouring down in the Spanish capitol. And with 2 sharp corners to go, including a lot of roadmarks, this means crashes are inevitable. So we decide to take control of the pace of the peloton, trying to let Robert Gesink staying out of trouble.
imageshack.us/a/img9/2854/112km.jpg

11km to go

And here we go! Tom Jelte Slagter looses control of his front wheel and hits Marc de Maar. Both hit the tarmac, including many others. Most important victim is Mikel Astarloza, who'll drop from 10th to 15th place in the GC.
imageshack.us/a/img827/2581/211km.jpg

4km to go

And another crash, this time in the last corner. Edvald Boasson Hagen is the first to crash, and Garmin's Daniel Martin can't avoid him, and continues with a nosedive. One crashed rider can't continue the race. Yuri Trofimov doesn't finish the Vuelta and leaves in an ambulance with a fractured vertebrate instead.
imageshack.us/a/img593/6134/34km.jpg

Finish

With all these crashes, we almost forget that the sprint for the stage win is going on. It's Red Bull's Gerald Ciolek with his 2nd stage win. Manuel Cardoso (Caja Rural) takes a great 2d place, beating André Greipel.
imageshack.us/a/img401/3124/4finish.jpg

And now it is official! Robert Gesink finishes the stage as 14th and wins the 2014 Vuelta a Espa√Īa, his 4th Grand Tour!

Robert Gesink won the most stages, 5 in total. Also Carlos Barredo (3), Philippe Gilbert (2) and Gerald Ciolek (2) had multiple stage wins.

Top 3

1. Robert Gesink

After winning the Tour de France, Robert Gesink started the Vuelta as the biggest favourite, together with Alberto Contador. Gesink won all the stages with a mountain top finish, except the one to La Covatilla, and the only ITT. He took the lead of the GC after the ITT, and was never in problems after that, taking his 2nd Vuelta win and his 4th Grand Tour!
imageshack.us/a/img689/5794/1gesink.jpg

2. Carlos Barredo

With no wins in the previous 3 seasons, Carlos Barredo started the Vuelta as a domestique in the Movistar-super team. But a great solo win in the 8th stage to San Lorenzo de El Escorial brought him the red jersey. After that, he never cracked, stayed in the GC-top 5 and thanks to 2 more stage wins (17th stage to Pe√Īa Cabarga and 20th stage to Vitoria) he even jumped to the 3rd position in the GC.
imageshack.us/a/img845/1707/2barredo.jpg

3. Gerald Ciolek

With only 4 mass sprints in this Vuelta, Gerald Ciolek deserves to be in this Top 3, since he won 2 mass sprints. Beating sprinters as Cavendish, Greipel and Hagen, he was the best sprinter.
imageshack.us/a/img21/8968/3ciolek.jpg

Flop 3

1. Juan José Cobo

The Vuelta started great for JJ Cobo, with winning the TTT with his Dexia-team and wearing the red jersey for 5 stages. He managed to be in the run for a podium spot, untill a crash in the 15th stage made him fall back to eventually the 14th place and no stage wins.
imageshack.us/a/img20/22/4cobo.jpg

2. Mark Cavendish

No stage wins in the Tour, and now no stage wins in the Vuelta. Even though he is the fastest sprinter of all, the Manx Missile can't win in the GT's for some unknown reason.
imageshack.us/a/img191/7756/5cavendish.jpg

3. Kanstantsin Siutsou

Another strong rider from Movistar was Belarussian Kanstantsin Siutsou. He was in the attack several stages, even in 5th place in the GC. But a crash in the ascend (yes, ascend!) of the Pe√Īa Cabarga bruised him that much, that he could barely continue. He eventually finished the Vuelta, but dropped to the 40th place.

Our Team

The Favourites

*** Wout Poels (Rabobank), Mauro Santambrogio (Radio Shack), Chris Anker Sorensen(BMC).
** , Jérome Baugnies (Vacansoleil), Thomas Dekker, Tejay van Garderen (Garmin)
* Fabio Duarte (Astana), Alexander Efimkin (Team Type 1), Fabio Felline (Katusha).

Our Goal

With Dekker having a low fitness of 82, a top 5 would be great.

The Race

3km to go

After an unsuccesful attack by Wout Poels (Rabobank) and Alexander Efimkin (Team Type 1) in the penultimate lap, Thomas Dekker has managed to sneak away along the St. Lawrence river. He starts the final ascend of the Cote de Montagne with a 11 second gap to a chasing peloton, with Team Type 1 and Astan in the lead.

Finish

At the sumit of the Cote de Montagne, Tejay van Garderen attacks out of the peloton, and flies past Dekker in the last kilometre. So just as last year, it's another 2nd place for the team in Québec. Dekker did great, but Van Garderen was too strong today. (that BMC rider is 1 lap behind)
